Fantastic hotel in the heart of Antigua! The location was incredible, everything was right outside our door.

We booked a standard King size bedroom, and were given one on the first floor. Everything was immaculately clean inside. The furniture was vintage and we felt like we had gone back in time (in a good way). The bathroom was HUGE, we had both a shower and a separate bath tub. The only negative for us was that the only window in the room faced the inside of the courtyard... so we felt funny leaving the curtains open, because we would be eye level with people walking around.

The courtyard area of the hotel was the highlight for us though. There are plenty of tables and couches to lounge around in and take in the relaxing sounds of the instrumental music and fountain, and be surrounded by beautiful lights. Overall, the experience was amazing. Sometimes the busyness of the city of Antigua could be overwhelming, but coming back to this hotel was like coming back to a relaxing oasis.

This hotel takes you back in time the best way possible. The rooms are gorgeous and the entire hotel is very peaceful and comfortable. The gardens make you feel like you're in paradise. I can't say enough good things about my stay here.

We were in Antigua in summer 2006. We booked a room in Posada del Hermano Pedro. That was a big disappointment, so we went out looking for another place to stay. On the other side of the block, close to the cathedral, we found El Palacio de Dona Leonor. They offered rooms already, although the hotel wasn't completely furnished yet. They had just renovated the building. Even though it was a great place to stay. We could pick our room from all the rooms available. Some had baths, others didn't. We had a room with two very nice beds, a bathroom with a beautiful bath, LCD TV in the room and a view on the cathedral and one of the volcanoes. The building is on old 'palace'for one of the richest families of Antigua. The old atmosphere is still there, with big wooden doors, old closets etcetera. The very friendly American owners payed very much attention on the decoration of the hotel. In the morning a fresh breakfast was prepared specially for us (being the only guests). If you want to stay in Antigua, you won't regret staying at the Palacio de Dona Leonor. Unfortunately they don't have a website (yet?), so you have to walk in there and ask for a room. It's at least 4*.

Palacio de Dona Leonor is a wonderful, boutique hotel centrally located in one of the prettiest cities in Central America. The rooms are spacious, well appointed, and the staff is helpful and very pleasant. The location is ideal; just 50 steps from Plaza Mayor. But,
we hear no noise even though so close to the center of town.

PROS
- well maintained garden area

- remodeled bathrooms-very nice.
- breakfast price was okay and food was good.
CONS
- no parking
- some of the liquor that was left from the night of the event DISAPPEARED along with money gifts (cash in envelops) placed with the rest of checks (they didn't take the checks) on the assigned box.

I would love to be able to give this hotel 5 stars as I agree with so many of the other reviews here about it's great location, elegance, peaceful courtyard, outstanding restaurant and generally excellent service.

However, the devil is in the details -- and in the follow up after leaving. To the latter point: I find it unacceptable under any circumstances, especially when a hotel is as well recognized as the Dona Leonar, when the management refuses to respond to inquiries after the stay about expenses charged without explanation. In my case, they added a charge to my shuttle to the airport without telling me ahead of time or at the time I gave permission to add it to my bill. They had responded very quickly before I arrived to various questions I had via email, but they have not responded to me about this and other charges almost a week after my departure.

Similarly, I did not get an explanation of charges on my breakfast. I reserved a room with breakfast included. But the only thing they did not charge me for was juice and coffee. Anything I ordered off the menu was billed to me. When I have stayed at other hotels in Antigua, breakfast included juice, breakfast, AND an entree off the menu. At no time upon my arrival or at breakfast was this explained to me.

Devilish details. My room did not have air conditioning -- it was so warm in the room on my first night I could not get to sleep. The shower has very weak water pressure -- and the hot water goes on and off. There are iron door stops on the antique room front doors. Occasionally they slip into the holes in the ground and you get locked out -- this happened to me twice. I paid more for my shuttle than I had at other hotels in Antigua, and I did not get a van as was the case with those places. Rather, I got a beat up old taxi. And the hotel had not communicated to the driver that I had paid for the trip on my account at the hotel.

It is a shame that a hotel which is so attractive, comfortable, and well appointed in almost all regards would have these short comings and failure of management accountability. I could see the Dona Leonor easily being a slam-dunk five star hotel. But it needs to work out some kinks and become better in its communication with its clients.

If you wish to be right in the middle of town and walk to all the best resturants and shops...STAY HERE! Cabs right around the corner...you can walk stumble or crawl to the best eateries in town from the front door! Central park with the catherdral right around the corner along with the historic government buildings, ATM's, coffee shops and anything you need. Rooms are extremely clean and nice. Conde Neste has this place listed! Stay in the back or sides off the street or you will awaken to the rattling of vehicles early in the morning! If you are a tea freak this hotel will blow your mind!

This was my first trip to Antigua, my girlfriend had been here many, many times before, making it a smooth and comfy trip. I wanted to spring for the best, since we were only there for two nights. After careful review here, and gathering prices, input, etc here and elsewhere, I decided to go with the Don Pedro Suite here at Palacio de Dona Leonor.

Upon arriving to the room, we were surprised by the beauty of the woodwork and decor in the room. The bed in the Don Pedro suite is a massive, gorgeous carved wooded beauty. A four poster with a nice canopy. It was the physical highlight to the room. The bathroom was simple, and very small, for what I thought a luxury room should be. There are two large doors that open out to the street below, that provide air circulation to the room.

If I were to come back to this hotel ( and I just may) I'd opt for the second of the two suites, the Dona Leonor Suite, for one specific reason; it's at the back of the hotel, and is much quieter. The Don Pedro Suite faces the street and is quite noisy, since the streets are narrow, and with high walled buildings on facing sides of the street, noise bounces right up to your room. Loud people partying till very early in the morning will keep any light sleeper ( myself) awake till at least 2 AM. Another nice thing about the Dona Leonor Suite, is it has it's own private balcony with tons of space and furniture and it looks down on a gorgeous private pool area that was absolutely beautiful. The rooms go for the same price, so this would be a no brainer, in my opinion. I was a bit miffed when I discovered this private pool area, since it wasn't mentioned to either of us. I was curious what the other suite looked like, and was able to walk thru and that's when I discovered the nice amenities below.

Most of the reviews here said that all the staff speaks fluent or conversational English, which isn't the case. My El Salvadorian girlfriend had to do nearly all the communication. Without her ability to converse with the staff, we'd not received our complimentary breakfasts for the two mornings we were there. She told me that it was very common when staying in the nicest suites in hotels like these, that a breakfast is complimentary. One older manager ( most all of the staff appear to be very, very young) was able to say a few words in English, but that's all.

The food was incredible, the service was swift, courteous and thoughtful. Your ( complimentary) menu options are limited to two basic menu choices, but they don't mention that they are going to bring you delicious baked goods, fresh, fresh juices, and amazing coffee as well. It was a wonderful way to start the day. I had heard that this hotel's restaurant made some of the finest dinner dining available in town, and the menu they had posted certainly hinted at this, but we ended up eating dinner elsewhere.

I felt extremely safe here. It was recommended to us, by other guests, that we could leave our main entry doors open for air flow, and keep the balcony doors closed, to cut down the noise. We didn't do this. Also, one irritating point, was that there was no light whatsoever along the halls. The decorations were beautiful and the courtyard was exquisite, but feeling around in the dark to try to fit a tiny key into a keyhole in the door seemed poorly thought out. If it wasn't for my girlfriend using her cellphone to light up the lock on the door, I'd have to go back down and ask for a flashlight. I was on my knees literally, feeling for the keyhole.

During our stay, we toured around and compared our hotel with every other place we could find, and found none that compared with the amazing beauty of this place. Perhaps the Convento was on the same level, it's a beautiful resort, restaurant as well.
