The hotel BANKHOTEL ART CONGRESS HALL hospitably welcomed the guests and residents of the city on June 8, 2018. The hotel is located in Lviv in a reconstructed building of the former Austro-Hungarian bank in the historic part of the city. The branch of the Austro-Hungarian Bank was built during the period of the city’s rapid economic development, which took place from 1870 to 1914. Its designing was undertaken by two architects, graduates of the Lviv Polytechnic University, Edmund Zhikhovich and Michal Luzhetsky. Young architects worked together on the basis of the Zhykhovich design bureau. This bureau was famous for a large number of designed and later constructed buildings. Its main peculiarity is the use of secessional and modernist interpretations of various historical styles. In 2015 the Creative Architectural Workshop “Kudin” took up the design of the reconstruction and adaptation of historic bank building into a hotel.

The hotel itself is a very pleasant experience. Rooms and interiors are cozy, well designed + the location is great (walking distance from all major city sights). The only issue that the hotel management should improve and look at is the way how some staff at the restaurant are treating both their duties and the guests (during breakfasts). Hopefully, this will also be addressed so the hotel would indeed deserve the 5-star evaluation. :-)

I booked this hotel for 3 nights through Expedia. As a Gold member they gave me airport pick up / drop off, room upgrade if available and 2 hour guaranteed late check out. We were met at the airport at 21:00 and transported to the hotel. There were no concierge to help with our heavy luggage. Approx 35kg each. Not a five star experience. Hotel receptionist was very friendly and helpful. We were upgraded to a superior room which had a beautiful ceiling and was very spacious. Within a few minutes of being in the room someone was at the door with two glasses of fizz. That’s a great welcome! The next two nights some small chocolates appeared in the room. Nothing appeared after those two nights. We liked it so much we extended two nights and were told we could keep the same room. The breakfast buffet was good quality, smoked salmon and also sparkling wine! There are lots of staff replenishing food and clearing away. The restaurant and areas of the hotel are very nice and also clean. We took drinks in the rooftop bar one evening. That was a disappointing experience. There was nobody around but it took ages to get served. The waitress understood very little English. When we ordered it took ages to get the drinks, one drink apparently was being prepared in the kitchen. I asked for some peanuts but got a plate of smoked almonds for 70 UAH which were inedible. The next day and the rest of our stay at the hotel turned into a bit of a nightmare. My friend had a Covid PCR test that morning, we rang down for the print out in the evening. We were told it’s there, everything is fine and we could collect it in the morning when coming down for breakfast. It costs 1,900 UAH for someone to come out and take a swap and process the Covid test. This is with Unilab who the hotel have partnered with. I can only really warn you about using their services. I don’t think it can be trusted. Before breakfast we picked up the result and were told again it was negative, we proceeded to take breakfast. We checked the document and it said “detected” then later “not detected (negative)” for us it wasn’t clear so we went back to reception to query it. If we can’t understand the clarity of it then I’m not sure airport staff could! Now we are both double vaccinated had been in Ukraine for 9 nights already and we’re about to head home. Reception said they would check and let us know and we went out for the day. How can a certificate say “detected” then “not detected (negative)” on the same line? I’ve still had no good explanation for that. When we got back from outside in the afternoon we were told to check our emails. The email said it was a positive result. We were shocked, it asked us to remain in our room as well as for breakfast and take meals only in the room. We both did rapid antigen tests which showed negative, I went out and did another at a clinic which also showed negative. I showed these results to the hotel. I asked if the receptionist could arrange a PCR test with a different clinic. She kindly and quickly arranged it, you can feel that they do really care about their guests. Within a few hours someone came, swabbed us both and we were promised the results within 24 hours. In the meantime this caused much anxiety and concern, having to reschedule departure arrangements and consider how to get home if we were indeed positive. We rang down and had our breakfast brought to the room the next morning in disposable packs and also ate from the room service menu and could not use the facilities of the hotel like the gym in those last days. Until reception called to say the results are through from the other company and both were negative. Whilst we were pleased about this since we had no symptoms and felt well I was very angry about what I think was a botched test with unilab. Even though they still maintain their result afterwards. I emailed the hotel with my concerns, firstly I must say the front desk team and their manager were brilliant. Responsible, apologetic and promising to get to the bottom of it. They removed the cost of the original test and room service from the bill which was appreciated. Yaroslav continued to keep in touch afterwards to provide me with documentation from the clinic. However, words cannot express the stress, anxiety, frustration and extra expense that the whole thing caused. We felt totally imprisoned in the hotel room wondering how and if we would get home, concerned about expiration of visas, how to travel when PCR tests can even pick up dead Covid cells weeks and weeks after infections. I appreciated a lot the staff and I know for sure they care very much about their guests. This is highly evident. But, nothing much can repair the negativity for spending £600+ in a 5 star hotel where the last two nights were ruined. I recognise this was not the fault of the hotel but it is a warning to others about travelling during Covid.

We really hope it will help all other guests who plan on visiting our hotel. On behalf of our whole team, once again, we want to apologize for the situation that you have faced during your stay regarding the Covid testings, we understand how much stress it can cost when you receive a positive result on Covid and what the consequences of this information may be. We really care about our guests and we do as much as possible on providing a perfect level of service and those tests are part of our service, just to make our guest`s stay more comfortable and easier. I will try to explain to you step by step your concern and the whole situation, the same information I`ve been sharing with you in our emails, but I hope it will remove some part of the negativity in this review. 1) Our hotel has a partnership agreement with Unilab, one of the biggest companies that consist network of laboratories in Western Ukraine and Kyiv. Unilab is working based on the certificate number 200012579 (provides medical services in the meaning given in Art. 3 of the Law of Ukraine "Fundamentals of the legislation of Ukraine on health care" from 19.11.1992) and in accordance with the license to conduct business in medical practice AG № 597497 from 09.02.2012. (the same info you can find on the official website of Unilab and on Google) and we totally trust our partner that`s why we have started our relations in the field of PCR and Antigen testings; 2) We don't charge more than the price of Unilab laboratory 1500 UAH per test and an extra 300 UAH for nurse coming to the hotel. I have sent you screenshots from the official website that confirms it; 3) Unilab is testing customers with high-quality reagents for PCR studies on SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19), which detects all strains of viruses (COVCITO) and еhese tests are highly sensitive and cover a wide range of SARS-CoV-2, in the same time antigen tests, are not that sensitive as PCR tests; 4) We distribute all the results of our guests as soon as possible and once we received a positive test from Unilab for the first time, the administrator has contacted the laboratory to double-check this result just to confirm the positive result. We have shared this info on 14/08 around 16:00, after this Front desk team has tried their best to provide all necessary help and service, they organize other nurses coming (from another laboratory) and we shared results on 15/08 around 14:00 just to make everything as fast as possible as we understand how disturbed you were; 5) According to the recommendations and requirements of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and hotel rules we were obliged to inform you that we cannot serve you in the restaurant (as it is a public place) but we offered you an option - free breakfast in the room and later on - free room service as we understood that you were upset with the current situation. We are sorry that you had to spend the time in your room, but due to COVID restriction, we cannot allow guests to face other guests if there is a tiny possibility of having COVID and we hoped you will understand that (at least you told so). But we didn`t force you to stay in the room; 6) I have shared with you all documentation, graphics, official letters, and protocols that confirm the authenticity of the tests performed, they are stored in the system and can be used as evidence. When we`ve tried on demanding the same documentation from another laboratory, we didn`t receive any answer (we have tried on calling ad mailing), so we cannot be sure about the reliability of these results. We suggested you, Mr. Paul, once you will be receiving results at the laboratory in the UK about confirmation on the reliability of provided Unilab results. 7) We understand Your`s and your friend's shock and we cannot remove all negativity after the current situation, but from our side, we have tried our best. For the next time we wish you to find the best laboratory for your visit or another hotel, that can provide the same service better that we did.
