In the madness of Mandalay this little retreat shines like a beacon. Beautiful rooms, lovely (expensive) restaurant quaint little pool, free evening cocktails, music make this a wonderful place to stay. It's not cheap but rarely are the best things. This is a romantic hotel not to be missed.

Of all the places that I stayed in Myanmar in a three week stay, this was my least favorite hotel. There were pluses nd minuses. First the good things. There is a good restaurant on site, Spice Garden, that offers decent Indian Food. We ended up eating here three times for dinner after long days of sightseeing as we were...

Mandalay sounds the ultimate romantic destination but we found it to be rather more prosaic. This hotel was good, very good by local standards, but as others have pointed out recently, is not quite up to speed with modern standards. There is no lift and the staircases are not well served by bannisters or handrails. The staff are unfailingly helpful...

We booked a double room and found bed jammed against the wall - so you could only get out of bed from the leaft side or over the bottom of the bed. The rooms were clean and had nice bathrooms - shame that too many rooms had been crammed into the available space. Currently they are upgrading the red canal...

Dear Donald, Thank you for your valuable feedback and I do apologize for the inconveniences you faced during your stay with your room. We are also happy to report that the fencing for the safety of the visitors and passerbys along the canal next to our hotel is now complete. We hope to welcome you back during your next visit...

This is a beautiful building, nicely decorated with furniture that looks antique. The staff is pleasant, and the restaurant serves very fresh food, well prepared, but not the least bit spiced. One drawback: our room on the third floor, which was quiet and surrounded by leafy trees, was reached by a narrow circular staircase, somewhat of a challenge for my...

We had an absolutely fantastic stay here, and would wholeheartedly recommend the hotel. It has a lovely location in a residential area of the town, but within easy reach of the main sights (by inexpensive taxis). We booked a Chin room which had a spacious patio overlooking a little stream and the hotel gardens. A wonderful spot where we sat...

The staff were almost uniformly friendly and helpful, the hotel is attractive and has gorgeous teak woodwork, and the restaurant was good, though breakfast choices were somewhat limited. But the hotel has deficiencies and is not for everybody. First, it’s in a residential area, a long walk from anywhere (like other restaurant choices). Second, there’s no lift, so anyone who...

First stayed here 15 months ago and it's still the same. A small delightful hotel offering an oasis of peace and comfort in a busy city. Too many 'boutique' hotels seem to be built for the satisfaction of the designer/architect but this is a genuinely great place. Super friendly staff, nice touches such as the nightly cocktails by the pool...

The staff here were really delightful, they were all friendly and accomodating which is more than can be said for the room which was small to say the least. As I was travelling with my brother and we needed twin beds I thought that this was the reason and that rooms with double beds were larger but on reading the...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
An oasis by the landmark Red Canal in local folklore just minutes from the famed Mandalay Palace and other attractions, The Hotel by the Red Canal is a convenient sanctuary, with its lush tropical greenery and calming water features, amidst the hustle and bustle of Myanmar's cultural city. “By choosing to stay with us, we will provide you with the extra measure of quality, comfort and personal convenience that you are looking for. Being small, we are able to provide personal attention to the needs, wants, and expectations of every guest.” The boutique-style hotel is a celebration of all things Myanmar, featuring teak furniture and fixtures & fittings made from rattan, mother-of-pearl and other local materials as well as Myanmar marble lining the bathroom walls. Each of the 4 types of guestrooms or customized suites, differentiated by individual style, bears the name of the major ethnic groups in multi-cultural Myanmar and is adorned with rich traditional paraphernalia and trappings reflecting their respective cultural heritage. All Chin and Shan suites feature a balcony overlooking the swimming pool and garden green. Ground floor Chin suites enjoy a “water moat”. The Rakhine suites are spacious and ideal for the business traveler. An outdoor shower with a slate wall of cascading water is the highlight of the honeymooner Kachin suites. ... more   less
