Excellent location, reasonable price, good restaurant. Unfortunately there was quite heavy odor in the room. The hotel staff do not speak English, even receptionists, but they are very friendly and with some efforts from both sides you can communicate.

The hotel room was small and it looked (in a bad way) the age of 100 years that the hotel has. One of the walls had green stains, like moho. Second floor under refurbishment, so it was dusty, very dirty. Consider yourself lucky if you find the right people in the reception who speak English. Breakfast buffet was OK, but... More

This hotel in the middle of the "European" section of Harbin is probably more than 100 years old (the date of actual opening seems somewhat in dispute), is elegant (wonderful wood paneling), clean, comfortable, and friendly. I cannot say how it compares with other hotels in the city since this is the only one in which I have stayed, but... More

I was in a conference in Dalian, China and wanted to visit Harbin for the weekend. I stayed in this Harbin hotel for one night. Before rating the hotel proper I want to warn tourists about the restaurant in this hotel. I ate seafood in its restaurant the night of my stay. Midnite I woke up with diarrhea and vomiting.... Older, charming hotel with lots of history this hotel is set right on the pedestrian street with all of the shops. Rooms seem to be different grades. We were in the lower cost rooms which was fine for 2 nights. Heaters in the room are very warm. Be prepared. Rooms were basic but clean. Other rooms of main building looked... More

Picked this hotel based on location and I wanted to stay in an old-style building. Rooms were warm and so was the shower, but the water pressure left something to be desired. Breakfast was standard mid-rang Asian hotel breakfast. Was happy with the location and the short stay. Do not stay here if you are expecting a posh stay or... More

The Modern Hotel is not that Modern!, it is part of the historic buildings collection on the main pedestrian street. Location is excellent, the entrance of pedestrian street is chaos as it is actually a restaurant and seem very popular as always many people queued up. The hotel main entrance is round back, the staff were helpful, spoke enough English... More

A disgrace to be frank. The best thing is the location and it actually looks OK. It is very close to the church and you might even think you are in Russia…. and the hotel is on the main street. when you arrive and the lady at the desk was friendly but spoke no English but that is OK. Once... More

Good location, that seems to be it. Extremely overpriced. Dirty rooms, the toilet looked like a public toilet. Dirty, smelly. Loud rooms, you could hear your neighbours. Staff doesn't speak english and if they do, hard to understand and rude. Lousy breakfast, dirty plates/cutlery. 4stars are overrated! If you have another choice, avoid this hotel.

Like some of the other reviewers, I had ambiguous feelings about the Modern Hotel. I appreciated its location; its architecture; the sad, live 1920s piano music in the lobby; and all the photographs of dignitaries who passed by long ago. I also appreciated the small ways that management has tried to modernize the place: the in-room wifi; the bathroom telephones;... More
