already when u entered the hostel and u see the face of Mao, you can understand the Youth hostel theory and atmosphere: Young chinese discovering their new frontier and show off their Han supremacy!!! staff very unfriendly with foreigners, noisy dining area controlled by chinese comrades that do not give a damn about jam with other travellers, cleaness standard very...

It doesn't deserve the name of international youth hostel at all. Not to mention the mildew smell, hard rock bed with thin pillow and bed sheet without air conditioner and heating which makes me couldn't sleep. The worst experience is the unfriendly and rude staff which ruin its image. We stayed there for 2 nights. Unfriendly receptionists especially the cleansing...

Just in a few words. Don't have high expectations from this hostel. It's a very Chinese place, full of Chinese backpackers, not so friendly and helpful staff to the foreigners and with a cold atmosphere, too. Several people were drinking beers with the guy from the hostel until late at night and nobody cared if someone was sleeping. The bathroom...

A very pleasant place, busy with many chinese travellers. The staff speak bafflingly little English for people employed to speak to foreigners but overall the vibe was good. Very comfortable beds, had a great nights sleep. Would recommend.

My husband and I (late 20s, experienced backpackers) stayed at this hostel in October 2013 for two separate nights while we were transiting through Urumqi during a two-week trip to Xinjiang. Pros: -The girl working the front desk was both friendly and helpful. (Some people seem to have indicated the opposite, I will note that this could be dependent on...

This is a regular youth hostel. It has very simple rooms and a simple but inviting common area. The beds are rock hard, but that just seems to be an overall Xinjiang standard, so nothing to be surprised about. But what we did mind a lot were the toilets and bathroom. The smell was really terrible and having one smelly...

Avoid this place if you can. Staff are rude and useless. They don't have the most basic knowledge of Urumuqi or common tourist needs. In summers the Army occupies the school behind the hostel, be ready to be woken at 4am by PLA marching songs and yelling. Filthy toilets, grungy beds and a hostile atmosphere make it a place to...

Our dorm room's lock was broken, and the bathroom door was rotting and wouldn't close properly. Staff seem to resent foreigners. The fridge ran out of beer at 5pm and they said they didn't have any more. After getting beer from a local shop I later saw one of the staff go into a room and bring back beers for...

The hostel is a good place to just get a nights rest. The room was painted like a little kids room. The room was run down as much of the hostel was. The main room was very smoky so we did not stay in that area. ( I know it's China) still I don't smoke. The hostel was near the...

Somewhat gruff staff, with mostly a challenged command of English. decent enough beds. No lockers in the dorms. Good, somewhat grotty showers. Pleasant enough common area, no breakfast served. Hot water available.
