To begin with the photos above (unless tripadvisor has removed them) are not of Grand Central Hotel.

I picked this hotel out of the L.P which lists a number of places in the area. With retrospect I probably should have checked some others but I was tired and couldn’t be bothered traipsing around.

My 420R room was not particularly clean. As is typical the double bed was two singles pushed together. Mattress' were in a bad way, pillow cases ripped. There was cable tv not that I watched it.

The bathroom was grim. Had obviously not been cleaned properly since... ever. The shower pressure was absolutely pathetic. I had to press myself against the wall to get under it.

Reception staff were ok but you're not gonna make any friends here.

One good thing about the hotel was the fact that checkout is 24 hour - you get the room for 24 hours.

I asked to keep it a couple of hours beyond the 24 (and offered to pay something extra) but was told I'd have to pay for another night.

There are plenty of other hotel options on this street as well as restaurants and internet cafés.

If you want to eat meat you could try Mahal Restaurant on Town Hall Rd (L.P listed.) The tandoori chicken was good. Though annoyingly the waiter stood over me waiting to see how much of a tip I was going to leave.

Ideally situated near the railway station. Relatively clean, but could do with more careful dusting as fine dust was sticking to the headboard and TV. Bathrooms ware clean but without clothes hanger. Rates range from 600,800 and 1300 without tax.

We arrived early in the morning, were told a double room was 660 INR for a double room with fan, so we thought, great, the sheets looked clean so might be ok, the bathroom wasn't that great and we had to have bucket washes, and it was a noisy hotel, but that was manageable.

Biggest problem was the beg bugs. Woke up with almost a hundred bites, when I told reception they did come and change the sheets about an hour later, but there was no apology.

We were not told that we had the room for 24 hours, so presumed it was a 10 o'clock check out at the earliest. When I went to reception to inquire about this on the day of leaving, the angry staff told me 'check in 6.30, check out 6.30, you leave now. You check out now.'. That is fine if that is a rule, but I have never encountered this before in my years of travelling so surely they would mention it at check in? No. Horrible. They then proceeded to tell one of the room porters to tell us to leave again. At least he did offer us a cup of tea or coffee. And I suppose it is lucky we did want to leave as soon as possible anyway.

On a South Indian tour, our families stayed here for 2 days. Rooms are neat. Owner is a good person. He arranged us a tempo traveller at a reasonable cost. He guided us to Alagar temple and other local places and arranged cottage stay at Kodaikanal as well. Thanks a lot and best wishes.

This hotel was by far the worst we stayed at in India. Dirty sheets, dirty room, bathroom had NEVER been cleaned, shower was a hose coming out of the wall. Reception staff were appalling. so unhelpful and rude. We asked for a towel and they bought us some that were so dirty we refused. The only good thing was that it was 24 hour check out so we were ok to leave our stuff there until our night train. The worst part about this hotel is that it was the most expensive! 1500 rupees for the 3 of us. We did shop around but alot of hotels were full and was late. had no choice but to take it. Do not stay here!

We arranged a package for 4 families from kerala to Tamil Nadu which covers Madurai for 3 days. Hotel Manager helped us a lot through out the stay. Discount on room rates and food bills are so much appreciated. Rooms are maintained properly. Overall a good experience and we are looking for continued business with this property.

I stayed here with my family for 3 days last month. Bit old property from outside. But rooms are good and clean. Near the railway station. 5 min walkable to meenashi temple. Staffs are friendly.. 24 hours check out policy for online customers too. So added advantage.

I use to visit Madurai for my business trip. Stayed here a few times. Good Budget property. Just asked them for a discount and got surprised when they gave me a deluxe room instead of a double room with the same budget. Happy with the staffs and level of service. Yes recommended..!
