Suryauday Haveli on Shivala Ghats is a reflection of the spirit of the holy city of Benaras. The Haveli traces its history back to the early 20th century. It was built by the Royal Family of Nepal as a retreat for the aged. Its now been painstakingly put together again to provide the best ghat experience in Benaras. Your stay begins with a 15 minute boat ride upstream along the famous ghats of Benaras to reach the Haveli, other nearest pickup point is Agarwal radio also known as Shivala crossings which is approx 200 meters walk only. The Haveli is also connected by small alleys and streets leading to the Famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple (15 minutes walk).

We found the Armitara Suryauday Haveili to be a very good hotel. We chose it for its proximity to the Ganges and it was a good choice for us for two nights.
As it is burrowed into the old city, our driver dropped us off on the main road and two bellboys met us to carry the bags and navigate the narrow lanes. We dodged various animal fesces on the 400 meter walk. At one point a naked ascetic holy man was directing traffic when a tuk tuk and scooter were passing each other.
The hotel, a former town house of a Nepalese family, is off a narrow lane and we were immediately welcomed at reception. The hotel is built around a central courtyard that extends to upper floors. We had a ground floor Ganges View room. While it’s nice to see the Ganges, it can be noisy facing the river front and the windows have decorative mullions in them obscuring the view.
There are three excellent viewing points in the hotel. From the roof there is an expansive view of the river and some of the ghats. We had dinner up there on our first night. While it was good, the set course thali was a lot of food so don’t book it if you’re not ravenously hungry. You can also go onto a ground floor balcony, and there are stairs from the lobby directly to the ghat.
Our room was comfortable with a good bed and three chairs and a desk. That made it a bit crowded. The bathroom was quite small and you must heat the water for 10 minutes before you shower.
WiFi is weak and cell service limited except on the roof. You don’t come to Varanasi for those of course, but it’s nice to be able to stay in touch with people at home to share photos of this fascinating city.
We ate dinner in the main ground floor restaurant on the second night and like the dinner on the roof it was very good. Note that all hotels and restaurants on the ghats in Varanasi are only allowed to serve vegetarian food and alcohol is not allowed.
Brijesh was our waiter the first night and he was a joy to talk to. All the staff were good. And, after tipping the bellman for carrying the bags 400m from the street, we found a note in the room requesting no individual tips. Thus we made a tip for other staff in the reception area tip box.
All in all a very good stay. Not luxury but quite nice, especially due to the location.

The Haveli is a lovely, graceful building in a great location at the top of Shivala Ghat with its own interior steps to access the hotel & Ganga. Beautiful views of the river and all forms of activity surrounding the Ganga from the rooms & rooftop terrace.
The Indian vegetarian meals are fresh and they offer western & Chinese vegetarian food as well. The musicians who play in the evening are outstanding.
We appreciated the pickup by boat from Assi Ghat. It was a very dramatic introduction to this ancient city from the holy Ganga.
The most outstanding quality of the hotel are the people who work there. Everyone from housekeeping to restaurant to the front desk are gentle, kind, considerate and happy to help.
The hotel can make all kinds of arrangements from airport pickup, to boat rides and temple visits. We strongly recommend using their services especially if this is your first visit to Varanasi or you are short on time.
We thank the entire staff for giving us a memorable stay.

This Haveli is incredible. This morning we watched the sunrise from the balcony in prime position overlooking the Ganges. Walking down the steps we accessed the promenade along the Ghats and mingled with the largest crowd of people we’d ever experienced. Yesterday evening we joined the hotel boat trip to see the Aarti, an unmissable ceremony. Coming back inside the courtyard was like walking into an oasis of calm with drinks on the rooftop looking over the flotilla boats. This is a great place positioned on the Ghatts but a few minutes walk from the very busy area. It was a quiet time when we stayed but the staff could not have been more welcoming and were even happy to prepare dishes to our request- may not possible when busy. We had a river facing room which was very comfortable and was cleaned sometimes twice a day. Nice rooftop terrace to drink tea and watch the world go by far below. Highly recommend.

We were three couples all senior citizens and had booked three Ganga facing rooms, for three nights.
The location of the property, a converted old age home from yester years, is no doubt good. But the access to the hotel is poor. You are dropped off near the main road, nearly a km away, then transported by rickshas to near 200 mts of the hotel and from there you walk on an uneven dimly lit lane. Offcourse, hotel boys are there to pick up your luggage from the ricksha. But it's a hassle. The alternative is that you take a boat from say Assi Ghat and alight at Shivala ghat and ascend three flights of stairs direct to the hotel courtyard. A hassle again for older guests.
The rooms are overpriced . You get the same amenities and comfort at other ghat hotels with easier access, at far less cost. And if you prefer the same price point as Suryoday, then you can find much better branded hotels, away from the ghats. The Ganga facing rooms come at a premium and are fronted by a common slim balcony, which is also used by other guests, meaning you have no privacy if you choose to sit in your room with windows open.
The ghat below the hotel is small and thronged by mendicants, beggars and locals. Cattle owners in the area use the ghat for bathing their cattle. So you wouldn't like to take a dip there or a stroll.
The food served is of average quality. However, the staff members are courteous and eager to assist.
All in all, an overpriced property. Perhaps the management thinks that a high tariff amounts to exclusivity. While conveniently ignoring to raise. the standard of amenities and service.

The Amritara Suryaday Haveli hotel was located on the Shivala ghat. It had a private exit to the ghat. The hotel employees provided excellent service. The hotel was little far away from the main road. After reaching the location from the airport,whenI called the hotel from the main road, a porter was sent to main road to carry the luggage to the hotel. Whenever I went anywhere from the hotel, a person always guided me to the main road and hired an auto rickshaw for me. The hotel had a restaurant where delicious meals were served throughout the day ( breakfast was included with the hotel fare). The hotel also had a free boat ride service. They also arranged for city tour with a guide. The hotel also accommodated with my timing ( early check in and late check out) Overall I had a wonderful experience staying in this hotel for my first visit to Varanasi.

A great location overlooking the mighty Ganges river. The property is reached by a walk through a labyrinth of narrow streets - the staff moved our suitcases from road to hotel. Our room was a river facing top storey room, providing a view of the Ganges through a window. The room was compact containing all the essentials, including a well sized bed. There was also an efficient air-conditioning unit. The bathroom was good and the shower (fed from a dedicated water tank which took 10 /15 minutes to rewarm) was fine for a quick shower. There was a small balcony on the river side of the ground floor of the property with a few chairs, and a fine roof terrace with much seating, both giving great views of the Ganges and the immediate Ghats. A small restaurant provides dinner (lunch and breakfast) options - all vegetarian, but no alcohol. Monkey's can be seen in the immediate area, but are kept away from the hotel by well organised staff.

This boutique hotel is a former home for the Nepal royal family and is situated on directly on Shivala Ghat making it an ideal location to see all that goes on along the Ganges. The hotel could be challenging to find among the crowded alleyways of Varanasi but our guide taught us the route. The hotel is well maintained with rooftop and first floor views of the ghat. The dining area in the courtyard and an air conditioned first floor room features fantastic local musicians each evening. Our waiter Jyotikishan was particularly helpful and friendly. The chef made the best vegetable jalfrezi we have ever eaten. So good we had it two nights in a row for dinner! The hotel also offers a free nightly boat ride to witness the Ganga Aarti ceremony each evening. This offered a different perspective from viewing the ceremony on the ghat. The hotel has made nice planters made out of plastic water bottles.

Our group of 5 stayed 2 nights total at the Amritara Suryauday Haveli and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The hotel sent out porters to assist with luggage down the narrow winding lanes which brought us to the peaceful oasis we grew to cherish coming back to at the end of each day spend in Varanasi. We received a welcome drink on arrival and were escorted to our spotless rooms that were cleaned daily. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, and we felt very taken care of. The buffet lunch and breakfasts were always fresh and delicious with plenty of choices. The roof top terrace was a serene place to watch life on the river. There was always security on the roof to keep away any trouble making monkeys and they always made sure the cushions were on the lawn chairs if we wanted to use them. The location of the hotel was a real bonus as it's right ont he Ganges but a quieter section a little farther down from the main area which we appreciated. We couldn't have had a better place to stay for our time in Varansai and highly recommend staying here.

No. Non-veg food and alcohol is not permitted for sale within a certain radius of the Ganges.
No there are none. If you have a challenge in climbing stairs then this hotel is not for you. You will need to climb stairs to go to the ghats, to reach the hotel and to reach your room if you are not on the ground floor.

It is better to request the hotel to arrange the taxi as they will arrange the boat and porters to carry your luggage.In case you are travelling light, you can arrange a taxi on your own and it is less than 10 mins walk along the narrow lanes to reach the hotel depending on the time of your arrival..
