As a couple that live in Bali, we have, of course, had recommendations from friends about the nihi sumba.

I’ve been lucky enough to have experienced some of the worlds top hotels and appreciate that it’s a delicate balance to get all aspects correct in a hotel.
I’m happy to say the nihi is well up there in terms of hotels that tick every box to a very high standard.

The price tag is high for Indonesia granted, but for that you get the exceptional, personal, unique service that you would expect for it, the same as anywhere else in the world.
They go the extra mile the entire stay to justify the price tag in my opinion.

I personally felt like no request was too much for them to handle during my stay.

From the moment we arrived at bali airport nihi made sure we didn’t have to lift a finger, they collected our bags and handled the entire check in process for us and even escorted us to the boarding gate. We had the same service when we landed which made the airports experience an unexpected breeze.

Once we arrived, our captain Maxi was extremely attentive and made sure we wanted for nothing.
From getting me medicine when I wasn’t feeling great, to helping us time our day so we could get the perfect pictures of horses galloping down the beach, maxi took care of everything.

A lot of hotels boast a ‘butler’ service, but I feel the nihi really takes its meaning to a very literal level to the extent that you have someone who is literally there to make your stay as easy, relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

The rooms managed to completely nail an authentic sumbanese vibe whilst still having modern fittings, features and comforts that you’d get in a city hotel. The air con was crisp and cold, the sheets soft and not damp (quite common when a hotel uses the authentic straw type roofs) and I didn’t see one bug in the room the entire time. I felt comfortable for the duration.
There are numerous room types and all seem to offer their own unique design and ‘instagrammable’ features, again adding to the unique experience so the guest knows they’re getting something different than anyone else in the hotel.

Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling great during my stay so didn’t get to sample as much of the food as I’d have liked and kept my meals on the bland side. But what I did eat tasted fresh and tasty and also had a very high class appearance to them.

Personally, the main hook with the nihi for me was the content I wanted to get for my social media pages. Horses galloping down a deserted beach was something I had to document on my IG 😂. Again, nihi delivered on the content side of things, they arrange these personal experiences for you and make them as content friendly as possible as I’m sure it benefits them to have guests posting jaw dropping pictures and videos, they even have an in house photographer who knows all the best shots and locations to get you whatever content you need.

Anyway, great stay!
We shall definitely be back to see the horses and the awesome team again soon❤️

TLDR: a little piece of heaven on earth; not cheap but totally worth saving up for; great concierge type of service; not so great for people with limited mobility.

This place is seriously the best place we have ever been in our entire life. My husband and I came here for our first trip together away from baby and it definitely did not disappoint. Communications were great!! They have representatives that keep in touch with you from the moment you inquire about booking till the day you depart, it’s truly is a concierge type of service.

We booked a 4D/3N trip and we could easily stay here for a week. Customer service starts in Bali airport where one of their rep help you out with checking in. When we arrived in Sumba another team already waited for us at the gate and we were escorted to the car to take us to the resort (1.5hour drive from airport), we didn’t even have to wait for our check in luggage since they have their team member that will wait for it and deliver it to our villa. The drive was amazing, we got to pass through the local villages and all the nature in between. Sumba is still not as develop as other touristy island in Indonesia so there are still plenty of open land which we hope will stay that way for a long time.

Once we got to the resort another team greeted us there and introduce us to our house captain who pretty much will be our point of contact throughout our entire stay. Ours was Anggri and she’s so amazing!!! Not just with what she does (which she does wholeheartedly) but also as a person. We booked the Raja Mandaka villa but to our surprise when we got there they had upgraded us to the Marangga villa and of course we were very pleased.

This place have so much activities that we had trouble deciding on what we wanted to do for our short trip. We ended up partaking in the swimming with horses (last minute decision and of course Anggri was able to arrange that super last minute), turtle release (free of charge and luckily some turtle eggs hatched when were there) and of course the nihioka full day safari (our guide Tiger is a funny dude).

So let’s talk about value... this place is not cheap but you get what you paid for and we love the fact that they employ local people and give back to the community through Sumba Foundation. It is also a semi all-inclusive resort so your meals are already included in the pricing (alcohol is extra but they do have a mini bar in the room that have some alcohol that’s already included with no additional charge), few activities are included in the pricing and most are at additional charge. If you can avoid the high season so you can get better pricing and they occasionally do have some sale during the low season. It’s definitely worth saving up for and any special occasion trip.

Another thing to be aware of is that there are a lot of walking involved around the resort (uphill, downhill, stairs) so if you or someone in your party has limited mobility you might not be able to enjoy it as much as we did.

We love it so much here that we didn’t want to leave this little paradise. We will definitely save up for another trip back, maybe longer and we’ll bring the baby with us next time!

Thank you Nihi team for the hospitality.

I was blessed to have stayed in Nihi in a beautifully adorned villa with a feeling of privacy while being fully immersed in Mother Earth. This included beautiful ocean views and sunsets facing directly in front of our bedroom/deck... Mesmerizing. This is not a hotel...this is Paradise. I must say five days was too short as I was ready to stay a lifetime. The staff was beyond lovely and fully attentive when you needed them. Horses bathing at the pristine crescent beach each day was stunning to behold. At dusk, as the sun descended, the ocean glimmered like a blue green opal. Seriously! There is an amazing culture outside the resort- the Sumbanese people. We opted to take the Nihi opportunity to interact with the delightful teachers and grade school children at a local school funded by the Sumba Foundation. I could go on... but if you're interested in having the blend of interacting with an untouched culture while staying in a surreal setting with superstar hospitality and attention to detail -- then Nihi is calling you. I plan on returning.

I just finished a 4 night stay and I was very impressed. I had doubts it would live up to the hype but all the merits this resort receives are true and well earned! Nihi is a VERY special place.

First, the service you receive is unparalleled with any other property I've stayed at. From the start of your travels all the way through the end you are catered to. I had many great interactions with the staff while there but Simson the guest captain, Aris in the lunch restaurant, and Agus the surf and water activity guide were really really great and made the trip that much better. Any request we had, small or outlandish was granted during our stay. Its hard to describe it without experiencing it but every single one of the staff seem to really love what they do and get joy from helping the guests.
We even had a small issue with some miscommunication over COVID travel regulations when leaving and Madlen and her team handled it with ease, keeping the short remainder of our stay pleasant and stress free.

The food is inclusive with the room rate and all three meals come from an extensive menu and if it isn't on the menu the kitchen can create something for you. Every meal we had was amazing with things imported from off island or grown in their organic garden or directly from the sea. Really impressive what they can do in their kitchen, considering there is so little development on the island.

The villas are also perfect, tropical and modern design with big bathrooms and lounging areas. Super clean and really quiet. We never heard another guest or any of the staff the entire time we were in our villas.

The most impressive part of the whole Nihi experience are the beach and ocean. Its located directly on a sprawling white sand beach with no one on it and the energy and beauty of it are indescribable. The water is crystal clear (the hotel is very close to plastic free so there isn't one piece of rubbish on the beach or in the ocean) and stunning. Theres a great surf break right in front thats private to the hotel and super fun.

The hotel has many great scheduled activities to keep you or your children busy or you can just lounge in the different areas of the hotel doing nothing depending on what type of traveler you are.

Cannot recommend this hotel enough its truly one of a kind!

Staying at Nihi is an experience of a lifetime not only because it's a beautiful location, but you also get a sense that people that work there are very proud to be working there and are treated well. They provide the first-class service and even greeted us at our departure terminal with our tickets at hand. We were welcomed at the airport with the best coconut I have ever tasted, and believe me. I have had many coconuts. The rooms are tastefully decorated, and even though Sumba is remote, Nihi provides everything you might need and is very organized in arranging your stay. Anggi, who took care of us during our trip, couldn't have done a better job. She helped us with every request and was a joy to be around.
I highly recommend the trek to the spa because it's a beautiful walk through villages and rice fields, and at the end, you will receive your treatment surrounded by peaceful wilderness.

I can't recommend this place enough!

The the moment we walked in the entrance to the resort, we were thoroughly impressed. The interior decor was amazingly detailed, yet warm, inviting and original without loosing the touch of the cultural experience of where you are. The personnel we encountered were all very pleasant and accommodating. Our villa is called Puncak. The blue and white decor of our 2nd floor room was crisp and comfortable and wow, what a pleasant view from our balcony with outdoor bath tub so that we can enjoy the view from the balcony.
The food was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation, very pleasing. We especially enjoyed the special healthy drinks of tumeric every morning. I love the fact that they don't use a single plastic packaging. From the straws to the tooth brush' are all eco friendly materials.

But wow smimming with the horse was a life time experiences. Truly magical.

Overall, what a wonderful trip. Special thanks to James, Dan, Charlie, staff and management team
for making all the arrangements for us. We thoroughly enjoyed it and appreciate all the work the resort put into our visit. We would definitely recommend Nihi Sumba Resort as a great place to come to relax and enjoy yourself.

Being able to go to nihi is one of the greatest blessings in our lives. My husband and I went to nihi to celebrate his birthday. Previously I knew that nihi won the best hotel award from leisure+travel, and after arriving there, I understood why nihi was able to win the award. Despite its location on the remote area, the services offered by Nihi are internationally standard and even better! All staff work professionally but still give us a family feel, our rooms are always clean, and all the food tastes really good.
We got Bella as our guest captain and Cris as a tour guide for our activity. They work with heart so that everything goes smoothly.
It's just like a dream, everything is too perfect. Besides getting a romantic surprise birthday dinner, we also had an opportunity to stay at Chris Burch's room and it was an experience we will never forget. Thank you nihi, you really pamper us. What a vacation experience I will never forget for the rest of my life.

Our this year's journey through Indonesia took us from Bali, to Java, then cruising through the Komodo national park with finally landing on Sumba, everything organized on a top level. Therefore, we were a bit sceptical when being told that on one of the poorest Indonesian islands we would enjoy a stay at one of the best hotels on our trip. But we were really positively surprised!
NIHI Sumba is a fabulous place! Our Lamba 01 villa was a dream: spacy, perfectly furnished, great bathroom with outside shower, private garden and infinity pool.
We enjoyed great dinners at the three different restaurants with a wonderful cuisine nicely balanced between international and local dishes, and a Mexican flavour due to the chef's origin. Once - for an extra payment - we had a wonderful private dinner just for the two of us served at our villa.
That leads me to the service: the hotel assigns a guest captain to all visitors as central point of contact to all guests. Via WhatsApp that this person is available practically 24/7. The responsiveness of our captain, Petrus, was outstanding! But also, the service from the invisible housekeeping to waitresses and waiters, barkeepers, guides, staff for all activities was super. We also were very much impressed by the active presence and direct approachability of the hotel's top managers.
Staying at Nihi Sumba is not a "cheap undertaking", however, it is worth it. This not only for the services you get, but also for social investment you make. The hotel is the biggest employer on the island and is the major contributor to a foundation for supporting health and education of more than 40.000 people of Sumba.

I have been to many hotels and clearly understand what high-level service means. Here in Nihi you will definitely find it. Great delicious food , there are alternative milk and gluten-free options. Friendly staff who are well trained and always in touch. Here you feel that you are being taken care of and you are an important guest. The hotel offers a variety of activities for active recreation: surfing, diving, bicycles, trips to the waterfall or lagoon, etc. The villas are perfectly equipped, all the details and furniture are made of high-quality materials, there is a wardrobe and your things will be neatly hidden (it’s important for me). And of course nature! Absolutely wild corner of the world, where you will have the opportunity to see horses and bulls and other animals. You will also plunge into the culture of the island of Sumba, because everything in the hotel reminds you of it: the interior, details, a book about the island in each room, I recommend you to look through it. Everyone should visit here and feel for themselves what a really high level of the hotel means!

Wamoro or Lantoro 1bm villa. Which one is better? Differences?
Answer from Madlen Ernest
Sumba, Indonesia
Thank you for reaching out to us Maciek405, both are unique villas in their own individual way. The Wamoro 1 Bedroom villa is a duplex villa, with the living room on the top and the master bedroom on the bottom. Therefore this villa gives a lot of space. the Lantoro 1 Bedroom villa is a single floor villa, convenient and compact. if i can assist any further or you like to talk with us personally in regards to villa options, do not hesitate to reach out to me or my team. Unfortunately i can not post my e- mail address on here for you. But you can reach out through the website to us directly. Have a great day Madlen

Thank you for your question EC2007, Depending on the age of your kinds i have following recommendations for you, If kids are younger then 10 years old, I would recommend LULU Amahu 2 bedroom villa for you, perfect if kids are smaller to have them close by but enough space to enjoy a good time together. If your kids are adults i would recommend any of our Estate 2 Bedroom villas, such as Lantoro, Wamoro or Kasambi 2 bedroom Villa. Those villas give a lot of space and privacy. I hope my recommendation is helpful , Best regards madlen
