The Sugar Hotel has always been a hotel with potential. Close to shops, sights and bus terminals it offers a great stay for travellers. The rooms are immaculate and maintained daily. The facilities are spacious and offer free wifi, daily water and drinks in the fridge and easy to understand instructions for appliances in English. For travellers staying two nights or more a washing machine / dryer is available. Breakfast is free each morning, served by the owner (who also speaks English). Comfortable bed(s), spa, rain-head shower and bidet toilet all add for a very pleasant experience. The owners are lovely people too!

The hotel lies on a main road with many restaurants and shops. It is in walking distance from the Hwangnam area and even from the Tombs. There is ample parking space. Check-in is quick, you need to book your time for breakfast. The room is comfortable with a fridge, a bath and a desk. The towel supply is a bit funny, 4 small towels. It is quiet and the room can be made dark. Breakfast is simple.

Firstly, I chose this hotel for its proximity to the bus station (there's no need if there's 3 adults in your group because it is cheaper to get to most close by places by taxis) The high speed train bus stops nearby and if you wanted to get a bus to the Museum or Bulguksa Temple and Seoguram, it is the same bus stop. 6 mins walk. The tourist information is just there too.
Maybe being a love motel, the reception area had a coffee dispenser free and information and useful card giving you info on the bus numbers required to get to the different tourists spots. However, the check in consisted of a ticket window where you'd have to bend over if you wanted some eye contact or check to see if the person you are talking to is not an alien - perhaps love motel customers want that privacy. There didn't seem to be negotiable check in and check out time but you can store your luggage with them. The room key is already in the door when you check in.
However, the room was spacious, it had aircon, heater and fan, mini sauna, huge huge spa bath, dressing table with hairbrush, etc. No need to bring anything - we did not use it. The sauna wasn't hot enough and the spa bath was relaxing. The 2 double beds was very comfortable. Breakfast is served till 8:30am to your room. Ramen or western sandwich or roll. If you intend to sleep eat get a roll as the ramen would have expanded and cold if you don't eat it immediately. There is free water and a can of nice drink in the fridge which is complementary.
Nearby eateries are real local. No English spoken but who needs that when it comes to food. We tried a bbq nearby. The nice owner even came and bbq for us! There are recommended restaurants by the owner which I am pretty sure that it will serve yummy local fare but they were at least 400m away and we were too lazy to walk there.
You can get picked up or drop off but we miss their email as we were travelling through China and did not get the pick up which would have been preferable. She dropped us off, smoothest ride and fastest! I think you can do your laundry instead but leave it with them by 7pm the first night.
All in all a nice stay if you do not need much interaction with the locals which is partly the reason we travel. So for those of you who just want a nice convenient place to sleep, I highly recommend this motel,

We booked the hotel for our trip in May and requested two separate blankets instead of one large. Received an email from booking.com that the hotel confirmed the request can be a ccomodated for no fee only to receive an email from the hotel and Ising this can be accommodated for a fee. Ok, fine.

When we rrived at the hotel, we were asked to pay 30k won, we agreed and asked to add this to our bill. We went out for a walk, come back to the hotel to be stopped by the reception staff who advised that we now need to pay 70k won! Oh and the instruction to pay was 40k in cash(!) and 30k by card. Trying to swindle the tourists, shame on you. We refused to pay, got no blankets. Will never return and this left a very bad impression about our trip to Korea where apparently they try to swindle tourists at every turn,- starting from cab drivers, small shop owners and now receptionists! This was unexpected and quite disappointing.

They don't provide bath towels unless requested and don't change them.

What a shame as the hotel has decent size rooms and is in a convenient location.

We chose this hotel because we read a review saying this is a regular hotel, not a typical Korean love hotel, despite the corny name... However, in the rooms and even in the elevator there were explanations in Korean about how to book a room by the hour. In the room you could find all sorts of advertisements for pornographic materials in Korean. I think at the moment they are trying to cater for both couples who rent by the hour and foreign tourists. I would not recommend this hotel for families travelling with children, but it might be a nice experience for couples.
We were disappointed we could not use the bathtub because it was dirty. The bed sheets and the towels were clean though.

This motel is in a great location behind the Gyeongju bus terminal, so it's easy to get to all the attractions. The owner couple are lovely people, and the free pick-up and free breakfast were a delight.

The issues I had with the motel were the extremely firm bed (felt like a plank), the smoky smell in the room, and the glow-in-the-dark erotic photographs all over the wall. I didn't get much sleep and ended up leaving early.

It was very cheap so I don't feel angry or let down, but I'd just warn travellers who think this is their solution to Gyeongju's accommodation shortage - it's not going to be for everyone.

This was my 4th visit to the Sugar Motel. I last visited two years ago. It is still the best value for money budget hotel we have stayed in during our three and a half years in Korea. The rooms are a good size, clean, comfortable and well equipped (sauna, jacuzzi bath, toiletries) and the owner and his daughter go out of their way to be helpful. Since my last visit they have introduced an area in the foyer providing information in English on local restaurants, transport, chemists and hospitals. The breakfast menu has also been extended with quite a bit more choice than before. Breakfast is delivered to the room. The motel is in an ideal location for sightseeing, only a few minutes' walk from the bus station. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for 2 nights during our visit to Gyeongju, which is a beautiful place to visit. The hotel is located in a great location and great value for money. The double room we stayed in was amazing! It had such beautiful and unique decor. The facilities were great and the room was very big. Since we stayed for 2 nights, they picked us up from the train station. We walked to most of the tourist attractions like Anapji pond, Tumuli Park, Museum etc. Also, there is a tourist information center within 5 minutes walking and a supermarket within 10 minutes walking distance. They serve a big breakfast in the room, which is also included in the price and we could pick from 3 choices. There are restaurants/cafes all around the hotel. We enjoyed our stay here very much!

This hotel is only three blocks north of the Gyeongju bus terminals and run by a really friendly staff (family?) who tries really hard to accommodate their guests' needs (limited English so bring your phrase book). My room was clean and well stocked, fancy whirlpool bath and many toiletries. A nice fresh breakfast was delivered with a smile to my room every morning, small fridge was stocked with free water and juice, free computer and good wireless. There is also covered parking for guests. The dark strangely decorated lobby with its strong fake sugar smell was a bit off-putting, but everything else was fine. A great plus is that the owners will shuttle you to the city train station, and also to the KTX high speed station- which is 20 min outside of Gyoengju.

First the excellent location, it's just about 100-200 meters from the Express Bus Terminal and the adjacent Intercity Bus terminal (I was not able to find out the difference because both terminals have buses to the same locations), which is very convenient for getting to the next destination. We got there by train (Singyeongju Station, not the other "old" station in the city center) on the KTX line from Busan-Daegu-Seoul. Just take any bus outside the station, and get off at the Express Bus terminal stop (the first stop after the bridge across the river - no panic the stop is announced in English, as all other important bus stops in the city, and many people get off the bus at this point). You will see this bus terminal on the other side of the street. In order to get to the hotel, cross the street, and you will see the tourist office (a pavillon) just after the Express bus terminal. You can already get some maps and directions from them and they will indicate the location of the hotel, which is in the street behind the tourist office, just walk along the parking of the Intercity Bus terminal and the hotel is a bit further on your right hand side.
The hotel used to be a love motel, but not anymore, and the signs on the hotel clearly indicate "Sugar Hotel". However, the street and its surroundings are full of discreet love motels, but that did not bother us at all because it's a quiet area, during the day and in the evening, not at all seedy, everything is normal as in any other street, except that these love motels are illuminated during the night, which gives the whole area a special and colorful atmosphere.
The receptionists (a lady during the day and a man at night) spoke English and responded kindly to all our questions.
We booked a de luxe room, which was huge ! The room is divided between the bedroom itself with a big bed and a sitting area with a couch and a table with a desktop computer. The bathroom was separated in three distinct parts, the usual electronic toilet, a huge whirlpool bath, a shower with an incorporated sauna. The air-conditioning could be regulated according to our preferences. The room and the hotel are very quiet.
Breakfast was served in a room near the main lobby and they asked us to choose between different menus upon check-in for a specified time (breakfast was until 9 am). The breakfast was simple, bagels, cheese, coffee, orange juice, bread, but acceptable.
The hotel is not really in the city center, near the old train station, but that is not a problem as the main sights are within walking distance from the hotel (Cheomseongdae, Cheonmachong tomb and tumuli park, the Anapji pond, the national museum). The Bulguska temple is about 45 minutes by bus. We took bus 10 at the same stop when we arrived from the station.
There are convenient stores in the same street, there is a Starbucks in front of the tourist office and a Paris Baguette next to the express bus terminal. There are not many restaurants around but we found one about 10 minutes called Kisoya, near the tumuli park.
Upon departure, we could leave our luggage at the reception. We took a bus to Daegu from one of the terminals (paid 4'900 won each - 50 minutes to Dongdaegu), no need to make advance reservations, just go to the ticket office and hop on the next bus (every 15 minutes). The hotel also provides a shuttle service to the two train stations when staying minimum two nights.
I highly recommended this hotel, for its amenities, location and in addition very reasonable rate for what they offer.
