Detailed Reviews
We returned to The Villa Bentota after a lapse of eight years and we checked-out as happy guests. The Villa stays true to Paradise Road's design language and is a visual treat. Executive Suite 7, in which we stayed was spacious. The short walk to the expansive and clean beach was nothing to complain about and the occasional passing train was amusing to our child. The restaurant's menu is well curated and food was tasteful and servings were plentiful. The chili tamarind martini is a perennial hit with us and it was a pleasure to sip many while lounging by the bar or the perfectly manicured garden.
With the plethora of options you have for villa stays in Sri Lanka, what makes a difference is the quality of the service and the attention to detail. While Villa Bentota deserves all the credit for its design aesthetics, the service was somewhat underwhelming or not consistent. Also, considering the price point of the rooms, they could very well do with a revamp. The quality of the in room electronic appliances and the bathroom fixtures leaves much to be desired for.
Nuwan and Shehan at the front desk deserves appreciation for being resourceful and courteous.
Hope this feedback helps and we look forward to patronizing the Villa again.

Dear Guest, Thank you for reviewing Paradise Road The Villa Bentota. We are pleased to learn of your comments about the hotel. Every aspect of the hotel has been designed with much thought and care making it a unique design. Each suite is of a different but unique design which is much appreciated by our returning guests as they have the opportunity of being accommodated in a different suite each time. The hotel and its facilities certainly offer a much relaxed stay for our guests. We appreciate your feedback on food and service as we strive to excel in our standards continuously. We are pleased that the Tamarind Chilli Martinis stood out. We hope you will decide to spend a few days at the Villa Bentota when you return for another visit. Kind Regards, The Management

I had booked here for our last stay on this trip. I was slightly worried about the possibility of train noise, and was offered a non sea view room just in case. We decided to stay with the originally allocated room (7) and I never heard any trains in the night.
The rooms are very stylish, we'd visited Paradise Road shop in Columbo so had an idea what the decor would be. It was great to stay in Bawa's first hotel, a shame we didn't get to stay in more.
The food was good - staff were great in helping us move to eat on our balcony when the restaurant was effectively taken over by 6 kids under 5 running wild. We decided not to risk eating there the second night as breakfasts were also similar experiences; personally no issue with the kids, but the parents should notice the effect their kids have on the rest of the guests (we saw another couple eating breakfasts away from the restaurant presumably for the same reason).
The breakfasts were goo, either western or Sri Lankan, and the chef amended his Sri Lankan breakfast menu to our choice (and served it early as we had to get to the airport) for our last day.
We spent a short time by the pool, we actually got some sun briefly before the rain came back for a solid 24 hours!
Thoroughly recommend staying here - most hotels around Bentota around seemed to be large and anonymous, Villa Bentota was the opposite.

My second visit and my husbands first this is an extremely well designed hotel ( originally by Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa )with one of the nicest swimming pools but only a 3 minute walk to the beach and some lovely walks across the hot sand.
Our room was very well appointed with a view over the garden and pool & was well equipped with cafetière and coffee as well as Sri Lankan tea.
This is a boutique hotel that has mastered the art of being super relaxed with areas situated all around the hotel where you could sit down and read or quietly take in the beauty of where you are and pinch yourself at the feeling of ‘having arrived’. Whilst it is boutique its big on style and comfort and every room has a slightly different vibe so no feeling of ‘corporate’ cut, copy and paste about it.
The bed is super comfortable and bed linen and towels only found in hotels that really understand luxury.
The food was some of the best we have eaten in Sri Lanka and was well presented. The Sri Lankan breakfast a work of art.
The manager and staff were discreet helpful and quick to respond .
This would be in my top 10 go to hotels in the world.

+1
I have never stayed in a hotel so beautiful as this place before. The decoration and interior design are really stunning. I couldn’t stop making pictures.
The service is perfect: reception, pool, restaurant. It’s the best decision we could make to stay here for the last 3 nights of our holiday.
The breakfast was delicious. And we had diner once and lunch twice and this was very tasty too.
Our flight was scheduled late evening and we could stay with the hotel and use the pool and restaurant for the full day which made us last day still relaxing instead of waiting until we had to go to the airport.
If I have to mention something to improve: there a hardly no women working her. It would be nice for the balance to have equal men and women at the venue. And there is a note in the bathroom with the possibility to use towels more than once. Nevertheless they changed towels two times a day which is a luxury service, but not so good for the environment.
The hotel is based in a quiet area. Although the train is passing by frequently, but I think this is fun!
Apparently Bentota is an expensive place to have diner. Hotels and (beach)restaurants in the area have doubled (ore more) their prices easily comparing to other places in the country. But you can take a 10 minute tuk tuk to Aluthgama and find some places with local and reasonable prices.
This hotel is the best last stop before you are finishing your holiday and makes you going home with a big smile!

Absolutely loved loved staying here. Lots of people come for the fact that it used to be Geoffrey bawas home but it is worth it just for the service. The people are SO helpful and hospitable and every touch is amazing - from the afternoon cake to the turn down service. Rooms are really well designed and spacious as well and restaurant has good food and always seems popular with even people who aren’t staying at the hotel. Stayed for New Year’s Eve where the put on a really great party and dinner. Would 110% recommend!!

We spent 5 very pleasant days here at the end of our tour of the country and thoroughly enjoyed the extremely welcoming beachside location with onsite swimming pool and beautiful gardens.
The rooms are well decorated and maintained with very attractive views across the gardens towards the beach (which is behind the treeline and a two minute walk across the railway track). Large bathroom, room and balcony. We had room 7.
The restaurant provides good quality food, although quite pricey compared to local restaurants and also the menu was the same each night and could do with a bit of variation. Breakfast is served in the rear garden area and was very good.
Service all round was attentive. They even decorated our room on the night of my wife’s birthday and provided a birthday cake as a surprise. Thank you for this much appreciated gesture.

Having booked this hotel based on the recent reviews I was somewhat disappointed with the experience
I even re read the reviews before writing this
Having toured Sri Lanka this was our last stop for 4 nights before flying home, a chance to relax.
The reception area gives an impressive first impression
We had room 4 which needs some serious TLC
The trains are an issue as they start at 3 am ish and run through the day until mid-evening, why they need to sound their horn at early morning is a mystery. The hotel does mention that you have to cross the train tracks to get to the beach but does not cover the noise issue
The food is good although the waiting staff are not that attentive, for example - wine was served after the meal arrived, and we had to ask for the fruit juice which hadn’t arrived at the end of breakfast.
It was my wife’s birthday while we were staying there and in fairness they presented her with a chocolate cake the following evening which was a very nice touch
Bar service is erratic.
Never had the evening turn down service as the came at 6 pm when we were getting ready to go out
Leftover lunch in the room was not cleared until the next day
The pool area is very nice however there are only 14 loungers around the main pool when there are 15 rooms. The second pool is small and has no loungers – we never saw anyone in it.
We asked for a taxi to the airport, but they were only able to provide one if they added 10% service charge and 20% tax, everywhere else had arranged the taxi which we then paid direct thus saving any surcharge.
To end I would say that the staff in general were very nice and approachable.

We reserved the Superior Suite and we were absolutely blown away by the room. It was very spacious and had its own patio. The bed linens were of a very high quality, which is something very near and dear to me. The artwork and furniture, not just in the room, but throughout the complex, is just simply wonderful.
We also went to the superb beach, which is quite private and away from the masses of tourists, who are mostly around the corner in another area.
Later, we had dinner on our patio where staff set up a private candlelit table for us.
We thoroughly enjoyed every course of our wonderfully original, South Asian / Western fusion menu. We talked to the chef who came right to our table, which we really liked. We found out he had worked in Dubai for quite some time and is obviously very experienced. We told him we were very impressed with his work and use of primarily local ingredients.
The next morning we went to the dining room for breakfast and loved every minute of that experience as well. I had a perfectly cooked eggs benedict, exactly how I requested it.
I would like to make a special comment about the music. As we relaxed in the wonderful pool, mingling with a very interesting array of great guests, we heard a wonderful mix of Louis, Ella, Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Norah Jones and so on. At breakfast, the same genre of music was playing and we couldn't have been happier with the mood it helped create.
We will definitely be back.

We have travelled the world far and wide and have stayed in world class hotels in beautiful places but we were completely not expecting how lovely The Villa actually was. Not only the obvious design but the air of calm that exudes from it . So we will simply say that it definitely ranks amongst the best, professional and helpful staff who cannot help enough. If you need anything just ask and don’t forget to dine in at the hotel. They prepared us a wonderful and filling sea food platter on our last night that was expertly prepared and cooked. Top class in every respect. Thank you to all of the staff who make it such a charming residence.
