We were upgraded to the Club Suite, which no doubt reinforced our wonderful impression of this hotel! The suite is enormous with a glorious bathroom, with its own jacuzzi, a very comfortable bedroom that leads onto a large sitting room, which in turn leads onto the garden.
The garden is a delight, with beautiful trees - baringtonias and frangipani and of course the ubiquitous bougainvillea.
Service was outstanding and a swimming towel appeared on a sunbed (with a frangipani flower on it) every time we looked as though we might swim in the pool.
The whole place was spotlessly clean and had a calm, spoiling feel to it.
I would agree with one other comment that the dinner menu was a little limited, but for two nights this didn't matter at all. Breakfast was excellent and the dining room was open-sided onto the garden, so a wonderful place to sit and eat.
There is a railway at the end of the garden before you get to the beach, but that added to the fun and interest.
Thoroughly recommended

This is a lovely hotel about 15 rooms in total. The hotel is designed I believe by Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka most famous architect. The hotel sits almost next to the beach but is separated by a railway line that you can walk over easily. This doesn't detract from the ambience, with just a few trains per day. The service is excellent, the staff are friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The food is good with a limited menu though. The gardens are beautiful with the occasional wildlife pass through. Mongooses are beautiful and elusive. The beach is beautiful but there is the dreaded plastic in parts. I noticed some of the other hotels sending their staff to collect it up, perhaps the management here could do the same for the environment and general ambience? That would be a good thing to do and I am sure other tourist would appreciate it?

Ayubowan Dilrukshi, Prasanna and Travis (the American boy😉) and the whole team Chef, gardener, SPA masseur, welcome and night watchman.
Sylvie and I would like to thank you for your excellent welcome both very professional and very friendly because know it, the villa club people will always do everything for your well being. We were picked up as soon as we arrived at the airport and those despite an early morning arrival then our room was ready from 8am.
Left in circuit at 4:00 a person brought us a breakfast basket, you want to rent a scooter no problem more the situation of the hotel offers many possibilities of escape whether by train, bus, taxi, tuk tuk or motorcycle.
Question meal we had breakfast and dinner at the hotel.
Breakfast: fruit, buffalo yogurt, omelette and bacon and many other choices.
Dinner: as you will see in photo we tested almost all the Sri Lankan specialties proposed and each time it was a treat.
The chef and his team are on top.
You want fresh fish a special request and Prasanna and her team will look for will satisfy you.
Simple pool but temperature and cleanliness at the top ditto for the very intimate garden not to mention the extremely pleasant olfactory atmosphere and soothing mixture of smell of gardenia and jasmine.
Room and interior of the hotel both simple and extremely elegant, colonial style and it is all the interest of the place the feeling of being at home in VIP++ mode and not in one of these factories to tourist sanitized and charming.
Beach: Direct access, wild and clean ideal for late afternoon walks and swimming in the rollers.
⚠️The train ⚠️ It is very little present, a few trains a day of a few seconds but absolutely does not disturb your tranquility because it is not a TGV and on the contrary it brings an entertaining and exotic note, a kind of attraction.
In conclusion these 7 days were wonderful and rich of beautiful meeting in a dream place.
We plan to come back longer with our three children and it will be at club Villa as one of our bases on the West side.
Bohoma istuh-ti all and take care of yourself.

This lovely small hotel redesigned by Geoffrey Bawa and subsequently added to by associates is a great place to stay to appreciate his style as an architect and to use as a base to visit The Brief and Lunuganga. The front of house staff, many who have been there for years, are friendly, cheerful and helpful.
The house is, however, showing it’s age a little and this business is somewhat out of touch with what might be expected of a “boutique” hotel. The rooms are furnished with many of the original pieces but strange additions have been made, for example a fridge unit and towel stand that would be more at home in a safari lodge. The rooms have few sockets and charging even two phones required co-ordination and the hair dryer could not be plugged in anywhere near a mirror. We had expected modern hotel management to have environmental consciousness but no option was given to retain our bedding and towels and these were changed every day, even if towels were hung up carefully. In the dining room crude and very large mugs were balanced on saucers for our breakfast tea/coffee and the small fine china cups and saucers we might have expected in the dining room had made their way to our room for tea making. In addition it was disappointing that jam and marmalade comes in airline style small plastic containers. Unusually mosquito coils were not made available for our outside sitting area, an otherwise lovely place to sit before dinner and we were troubled by biting insects on this property.
This is a small hotel and conducive to a calm and quiet few days. However, non-residents appear to be welcome and larger parties would change the atmosphere if these coincided with your stay.

We stayed for four nights. The staff were very well trained and always greeted us with a smile. The beautiful Geoffrey Bawa house and garden is superbly maintained and the pool always immaculate.
However unlike some other beachfront hotels there is no support for the beach, no seats or umbrellas, and swimming not advised due to the rip.
The building needs painting and the light fittings were all in need of a seasonal clean.
Our main disappointment though was the lack of any tour/ concierge service. When we asked about which were the best excursions, and if we could be assisted to travel to, for example, Brief Garden or Lunuganga, the response was “we don’t really do that”. As experienced travellers we were able to sort these things independently, but we expect a hotel of this calibre to provide more proactive support to their guests. Even asking if our departure transport was in hand would have been a service that would show an interest in guests requirements.
We were told that cocktails were a “hotel specialty”, but little information was provided, and drink staff seemed much more comfortable serving a gin and tonic or a Lion beer.
The breakfast was beautifully served and delicious. Dinner menu was somewhat limited, perhaps due to the small number of guests that were staying.
With a little extra focus this could be a perfect stay, but overall we were disappointed with what we had hoped would be a very special end to our wonderful Sri Lankan experience.

These days people prefer to take a couple of days for a short vacation in Sri Lanka at a smaller hotel or villa. Club Villa is one of these places. Very clean, small hotel in a villa style, and the food is exceptional. We took the full-board package, and the chef made us feel special. The beach was a few minutes away.

We have just completed our 5th visit to Club Villa. It was as delightful as always. The garden is so pretty with many lovely trees giving shade. The pool is just right. Having stepped over the railway line, walked through a glade of bright green trees to the beach, we enjoyed long walks along the waterline. There is excellent swimming off the beach just outside the front of the Taj. Barely a 10 minute walk away, by the sea. As always the staff were were brilliant. Kind friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble.
We would like to express particular appreciation for the gentleman who arranges the sun beds. He was so caring, efficient and always on hand. He did outstanding work. We loved him to bits.
The only word of caution I have is to recommend that travellers bring a supply oh good mosquito repellent. I recommend Club Villa highly. We always have the best time there. Every day is perfect.

I stayed in club villa recently and I must say, I have never experienced hospitality like it. The staff are so attentive and friendly, the truely made me feel like I wanted to stay forever. The restaurant and bar service is excellent. It was just a pitty there was one older English ladie staying there too who got very abusive and aggressive during our big family get together. The staff and management dealt with this perfectly but did not deserve the abuse and threatening behaviour of this creature.

The pool was very well kept and the garden is perfect! When a leaf falls from a tree there is somebody to pick it up. I would definitely return and will recommend to everyone I know

Stayed with a couple of friends, and occupied the suite, and two other rooms.

If you are a fan of Geoffrey Bawa, you will like this property.

His tropical rustic architectural style is one I adore. So, I loved the space. It was a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

Room no 15 was cozy and spacious with a lovely balcony and a big bathroom.
The suite was really nice too.

As for the negatives,

1. Needed improvement with the choice of dishes available in the buffet.

2. The floor of room no 15 has a moisture problem.

3. The bathroom of the suite is not soundproof, if you are on the upper floor
bathroom, you can hear everything.

4. If you are booking a triple room for older folk, please be mindful, the staircase to the attic (which is Bawa style) is quite narrow and without a railing.

While the food was tasty, the food options in the buffet were very poor. Especially in a country like Sri Lanka where buffets at hotels are quite grand, this was just rice and curry, basically the same food I would have had at home.

We requested a la carte for dinner on our final day, and it was really good. Since this is a small boutique property, I would think it's always better to offer a la carte for the guests.

Dear Mr. Charith First, thank you for writing this review and highlighting your suggestions during your visit to Club Villa Hotel. We must receive such feedback so that, in turn, we can improve our service standards. Therefore we are truly appreciative of the constructive comments made. We have already started looking into the relevant incidents concerning the day's events and assure you that such incidents will not be repeated. As our normal dining process, we offer only Set Menus for all three meals, but to as few requests from the in-house guests that day, we try to provide buffet meal service. Our lovely Club Suite room has an open-air bathroom with a few small trees and a jacuzzi. Of course, it's not a soundproof bathroom. We are sorry to hear about the moisture of the room's floor due to the heavy rains and the strong sea breeze during those few days (maybe it happens because your room is very close to the sea and the balcony and door are directly facing to sea ). We hope that you will consider visiting Club Villa once again so that we can be better suited to serve you. Thank you and best regards, Deepal de Silva and team.

Stayed for 3 nights in a deluxe room. Were first shown a room which was so small & dark it had no room for our 2 large suitcases. We asked if we could change rooms & they showed us a larger deluxe room over the restaurant but with no outside space so declined this room & eventually were moved to room 1 which was larger & brighter & looked like it had been more recently renovated than the two other rooms.
It is worth noting the deluxe rooms are advertised as being larger than the standard room but in some of the rooms most of the extra space is on a mezzanine level up some steep stairs which has another bed. It was too steep for us to use for our cases & definitely could not be used for young children or elderly . We are in our early sixties & able bodied & found it quite inaccessible & quite frankly dangerous .
The gardens & pool area are the highlight of this hotel & are beautiful . The man who looked after the pool & sun-beds was a delight & made sure you had your sun-bed wherever you wanted it & even placed frangipane flowers on your sun-bed! The pool is in excellent condition & very well kept.
However, most of the hotel does need updating to bring it up to its former glory. The bar area was particularly uninviting with its dark decor & no proper bar as such . The dining room had no ambiance but food & drinks were good & reasonably priced.
During our 3 weeks in Sri Lanka, this was the only hotel which had drinking water in plastic bottles & shampoo etc was also in small non reusable plastic bottles. The management do need to review their environmental policy.
The hotel still has a lovely relaxed feel about it & the staff were lovely & helpful. As our flight left late at night, they allowed us to stay in our room for longer at no extra cost on our last day which we were very grateful . Our rooms was kept spotlessly clean.
Not sure I would stay again as the trains at the bottom of the garden do operate until about midnight & start again at 4am & did wake me . The trains are approx hourly & were a novelty at first but when it affected my sleep every night I wasn’t so keen. It is worth noting that all hotels nearby along the same beach back on to this railway line so this is not exclusive to Club Villa.
