Budget stay that was very well priced. The location was fantastic, it was opposite the old fort walls, which meant we also had a brilliant view of the sea. The hosts were very friendly and were happy to give us advice on where to go. They showed us up to the terrace were we would be able to see views of the sea and the sunsets in the evening. These views did not disappoint. I stayed with my sister and her boyfriend. We had 1 double bed and 1 single bed which was perfect! The room was basic, but we were expecting that for the price we paid. There was a television in the room which was a surprise, not that we watched it. The only 2 negative points were that the bathroom door did not lock properly and the Wi-Fi was really poor. The wifi probably would not have bothered us that much if we were just staying for one night, but we were there for 3 nights and it made it quite difficult for us planning our next destination and how to get there and where to stay etc. There are plenty of really wonderful cafes and restaurants nearby. We would definitely stay again if we needed somewhere to stay for one night.

Rampart View was in a brilliant location for the fort and especially the sunset. We had the roof terrace to get some brilliant shots and avoid the crowds. The room had air con and a fan, and the host was very lovely. We had a choice of breakfast- Sri Lankan or western, and it was delicious. Served on the balcony with an amazing view. I would recommend staying here.

I stayed at Rampart View between May and June 2010.

I have stayed at a number of guesthouses within Sri Lanka and Rampart View is the best one I have stayed at.

The room itself was clean, tidy, and spacious. There was a constant supply of hot water and the ceiling fan was more than adequete for keeping cool. I was able to sleep soundly every night with no interruptions.

From all the rooms there is a fantastic uninterrupted view of the ocean. From the balcony and the roof terrace, you have a fantastic view of the sunsetting over the ocean.

For single female travellers, the guesthouse is an extremely secure and safe place to be. There are none of the usual creepy staff that you find all too often in other Sri Lanka guesthouses and hotels. In the evening, for added security, an intruder alarm is activated.

What makes Rampart View stand out from the other guesthouses in Sri Lanka is the quality of service from the owner, his family, and the staff. Despite the fact they run a jewellery shop next to the guesthouse, there is no hard selling to buy anything, they don't try to sell you tours or excursions, and best of all they don't ask you any of the nosey questions most Sri Lankans tend to ask you. There was always somebody on hand to assist me with any questions I had both day and night.

Even the tuk-tuk driver they recommended to me was respectful and charged a fair price; a very rare find in Sri Lanka!

If you need a guesthouse to stay at in Galle Fort then I can guarantee that you will not go wrong with this one; highly recommended!

26th Dec 2021 we went to Rampart hotel for our lunch and we have ordered Chicken Biriyani. It was late 30 min. Once I received the biriyani I was confused. It's really not a biriyani. It's yellow rice with chicken curry. I had to pay RS 1,050.00 for yellow rice. Terrible. When we ask from them about this. They said this our biriyani. Worthless place

Pros: Great location, having breakfast while looking over the sea was really nice. Lovely couple running this guesthouse, fascinating to hear about the history of Islam in Sri Lanka. Clean facilities.

Cons: Pricier than other places I stayed in and not any better. I found Millennium Rest Hostel which is just around the corner, just as clean, almost half the price, though without the nice view.

Despite charging more, no complementary water (most other places I stayed in offered this as a nice gesture), and no international power plug (I know I should've been more organised, but every other place I stayed in Sri Lanka had one).

Lots of mosquitos, despite sleeping in a mosquito net, lighting the mosquito repellent scent and wearing DEET, I got absolutely devoured, including on my upper eyelid, and my right eyelid became quite swollen for a few days, which was a first! Possibly because their bathrooms have large ventilation holes that open onto the outside. I've suggested perhaps mosquito netting over the ventilation might help.

I also did not like that the price they tried to charge me was even higher than the price they quoted me via email when I made the reservation.

A great place if liquor is not your only motivation :) Right at the beach, with the best view from the room, along with amazing hosts. After a long travel - flight to colombo, direct train to galle, and then walk to the hotel - it was the perfect place to sip a cup of coffee and enjoy the view from the room.
got to know the next day about the rooftop view, which is much better than the room views. Simply amazing to catch up with yourself, a bit of music, and a hot cup of sri lankan coffee :)

We stayed here last year and thought it was great. We returned to the same smiling faces and family atmosphere. Rauf and his family are extremely accomodating. The Fort area is one of the best experiences in sri Lanka and going to aplace like Rampart View adds to the experience. It has the BEST location in the Fort. One cannot fault the view from the room or rooftop. To have an excellent home cooked meal overlloking the Fort Walls and the sea below is unreal. This is a guesthouse, so do not expect a phone, TV, room service. Though it does have fan, air conditioning, WiFi, mosquito nets. The room is very clean and tidy. The value is incredible when you consider the view, friendliness and quality of the meals provided, (all to your requests). Would not hesitate to come here again.

We used to often stay at Rampart view due to direct views of the ramparts in the fort and because it was run by a family and it was safe, homely and Private.
After the owners gave a new management to take over we went there inJuly 2018 and we were anticipating a good stay.
But our hopes were completely broken. From the start of the stay itself when we walked in there was some young thug looking fellows who stood outside our rooms upstairs and we were most uncomfortable.
This place used to be so private and only resident guests were allowed to be inside the hotel, but now it seems to be a hangout place for the young manager and his mafia like friends. The young ‘manager’ seemed to be in cohorts with these thugs and this made our stay not peaceful or the same homely feel as it used to be.
To make it worse one of these thugs were sleeping outside our room in the night !
Unfortunately We will never go back unless the owners come back to take over.
Not recommended and beware !

Response from Mohomed H, Owner at Rampart View Guest House
Responded Aug 15, 2018
Dear Madam ! I just want to remind you that you could not check out the room on time. The management extended you 1 more hour, but you failed to check out from the extension as well. The other Guest who was suppose to check in to that room had to wait for 4 hours until you checked out. So thats the only reason for you to make a such review. And there is no thugs in our guest house as you have mentioned on your review. You can read our previous reviews, there is no such thing mentioned and experienced by guests regarding the staff and also the safety of the guest house since we took over on October 2017. And for your information there are two policeman standing overnight front of our guest house.

We spent a few nights here and chose this place based on Tripadvisor reviews which were for the most part glowing. Indeed a lovely location overlooking the ramparts and ocean. Good breakfast too. The rooms are clean but a little tired. Bathroom is tiny. Well located for walking the old town, but it is noisy. Thousands of tourist, school children swarm the ramparts right in front of you, and there are hundreds of buses that bring them. Wifi is free but can be spotty. Aircon is old and noisy. Among the lowest rates in the old town, but enough paid.

The first thing I must tell you about this hotel is that it is tight - very tight. So, if you want a big room, a private balcony/verandah, etc. you can skip this right now.

On balance though, it is a very clean and comfortable place. The whole place is kept spotlessly, the breakfast (which comes with the room tariff) is delicious and you can keep watching the sea from the common verandah all the time. Like many other buildings within the fort, this too is more than a century old - so, there is history right there for you.

Other things to note:
1. the owner-family stays on the ground floor and has let out rooms on the first floor. Access is through a gate and side-staircase. This gate is shut at 10:30 pm everyday; we found this somewhat restricting for us.

2. liquor is not allowed into the hotel.

Overall, I'd say this is a good place for those who don't mind small spaces, don't have much luggage and can live with the above-mentioned restrictions.
