One is spoiled for choice of hotel when touring Sri Lanka, not more so than along the south coast. Incredible old world properties have been modernised and many new ones built in recent years, but few hark back to bygone eras quite so effortlessly or elegantly as these two. Still privately owned, The Dutch House and Sun House are characterful but unique sister hotels (or homes?) a stone’s throw from each other and the hustle of Galle’s fort. Mercifully, the colonial masters of these gems are long gone, but waking up in either and being served by their delightful staff who pop up in both is a privilege. There is simply no other way of saying it. Just ask for the remarkably delicious curried scrambled eggs at breakfast. Your room girl might cook it, deliver it then wait patiently for your smile when you try it! The entire staff is as friendly, caring and accommodating as can be.

Both homes are stuffed with objet d'art, creaky chairs and dusty books, and both possess real old-world charm. It is everything above and then some which sets these properties apart from their pretenders. Wi-Fi and other nods to modernity are in evidence of course, but so are indispensable smells of the tropics - mothballs and frangipani petals! Whatever you do, don’t expect everything to work perfectly or predictably – my upside down door lock made me smile, eventually! Read a book, cross the road to the other house for supper, but otherwise just soak it all in and feel lucky you’ve had a chance to. The hidden swimming pool at the Dutch house is near perfect.

Book much less than a week and you’ll kick yourself.

We didn't actually stay at the hotel, but we spent a lot of time here as we had family staying here at the time. The rooms were spacious and tastefully decorated and the common areas of the hotel are beautifully done and very comfortable! The food at the Sun House is so delicious - we had my favourite curries of the trip here. The staff who work here are one of a kind too - so helpful and lovely and welcoming. I would definitely stay at The Sun House if ever I were back in Galle - not least because of the fruit bats and monkeys hanging out in the trees! So special.

Last week the team at The Sun House and it's neighbour, The Dutch House, hosted 34 of us for 3 nights as well as our wedding (for 85 people). Both houses are filled with charm and colonial heritage and proved to be fabulous backdrops for our wedding and the various Sri Lankan festivities we enjoyed. The food is some of the best you'll ever taste in Sri Lanka. We've been visiting there now for 5 years and never had a bad mouthful. Rukman the manager is a wonderful host, funny and thoughtful, and always there on hand to help - his staff are simply the best in the world. The owner, Geoffrey, is also one in a million with a fascinating personal history of living in SL and supporting Galle's annual literary festival. Not a single guest of ours last week had anything short of a simply idyllic and memorable experience there that they will cherish for a long while yet. We'll be back again as soon as we can!

I don’t even know where to start with how fabulous The Sun House is. From start to finish, our trip was nothing short of perfect.

We were a mixed (and arguably challenging!!) group of couples, families and young kids and the staff managed all our asks without batting an eyelid.

The rooms are absolutely stunning with every detail thought of and the entire property is everything you could want from a boutique property with a beautiful pool and easily accessible surroundings.

The food is amazing and provided a great mix for all our various guests- from traditional Sri Lankan to pancakes to salad.

We all agreed it was a trip for the aHes and we can’t wait to get back!

Thank you so much and hopefully see you soon - in Galle or Gal Loya!

The Sun house is a truely authentic Sri Lankan Experience, the rooms were thoughtfully appointed in a traditional artisan manner. We were luckly enough to be staying in a suite with a beautiful jungle view complete with a family of jovial monkeys happily going about their day for our enjoyment from our open room balcony.

After a refreshing swim in the boutique pool we enjoyed a delicious, fresh and exotic breakfast including juice tonics and first class coffee to kick start the day. Dinner includes many traditional options and the freshest seafood, followed by delicious cocktails and desserts to complete a full days travel.

The old building has been beautifully restored to its former glory as the manor of a late spice merchant at the turn of the century.

Michael and our hosts were more than accomodating even taking the time to place us in a romantic couples villa at a respectable distance from the children!

We loved our stay !

What a fabulous place to stay and enjoy Galle and surrounds. We spent almost a week here in late April 2024 and I cannot praise the people or the food or the accommodation enough.
The hotel is an old Colonial house built by a Spice Merchant on the hill just outside the Galle Fort area. It has been lovingly rebuilt, refreshed and redecorated by Millie, Tim & friends to reflect the heritage of that time and the region. This is a one off. Each room is unique. Beds are perfect. Aircon a must! There are no mass brand hotel amenities here. Everything is personal.

Especially all the people making your stay a pleasure. They made the experience for us. From helping us with airport transfers from our very delayed flights, to getting clothes locally (thanks FLY EMIRATES. NOT!) to organising tuk-tuks everywhere, day tours, special treats by the pool... To Ronald and Roshan thanks!
The food and drink were absolutely top notch and even when items were not available the team made a plan, the Chef is marvellous and everything is delicious. We ate there more often than we planned because the food was so good. Sri Lankan breakfasts are a must!!
To Umar for the fab cocktails and service, cheers!
But most of all to Priyantha, who epitomised 5 star service and care. He is a credit to the staff there and his wonderful attention to looking after us was without peer. Cold water as we lay by the pool. Amazing spicy curry leave cashews as a beer snack, dinner service. Nothing was too much trouble.
All of the staff treat you like family. Wonderful, kind and gentle people.

There are of course always some items or areas for improvement, Wi-Fi was intermittent for me in our room, despite best attempts to repair it, and a chalkboard for daily available food items would be good, also make sure you have the cost of day trips clear before you go. Some of the expeditions don't match up to what the cost is (not the Sun House's fault)...but these are minor items lost against the good feeling we have from this trip.
We would go back in a heartbeat. We miss our Sri Lankan family!

My family and I booked the sun house for 4 nights and we had such an amazing time! The chef was so accommodating to my baby’s meal times and all her needs (cot/mosquito nets/repellent/high chair).

The rooms were so heavenly and we were so well taken care of by the team. I had to add a picture of our bathroom which divine - facing the jungle. The property itself is beautiful.

It was really great to be so close to the Galle fort (minutes away by Tuk) - had amazing dinners there too. Can’t wait to come back.

The Sun House provides a tranquil setting, yet is just a 15 minute walk from bustling Galle Fort. The property is beautifully restored, I appreciated the attentive service from the owners and the team. Some lazy hours by the pool has brought my trip to Sri Lanka to a wonderful end. I highly recommend The Sun House.

Exquisitely beautiful property outside of the Galle Fort but in walking distance. Impeccable service, delicious food and cocktails. Old world charm and beauty. We stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed every minute. Our room was spacious and comfortable there was always someone available to see to our every need. The garden was impeccable as was the taste in decorating the common spaces with a mix of antiques and Sri Lanken design.

Staying at The Sun House during its opening for two nights was a uniquely special experience. The villa has both a luxurious and homely atmosphere. The refreshing pool and on-site bar / restaurant add to the overall enjoyment, but what truly stands out is the captivating architecture and decor. The location also makes it easy to explore Galle.

We stayed here in a large group and pretty much took all the rooms. All rooms have air conditioning (except the largest and most beautiful room on the second floor) and the wifi is quite good, much better than other, more expensive hotels we stayed in.
