Both homes are stuffed with objet d'art, creaky chairs and dusty books, and both possess real old-world charm. It is everything above and then some which sets these properties apart from their pretenders. Wi-Fi and other nods to modernity are in evidence of course, but so are indispensable smells of the tropics - mothballs and frangipani petals! Whatever you do, don’t expect everything to work perfectly or predictably – my upside down door lock made me smile, eventually! Read a book, cross the road to the other house for supper, but otherwise just soak it all in and feel lucky you’ve had a chance to. The hidden swimming pool at the Dutch house is near perfect.
Book much less than a week and you’ll kick yourself.
We were a mixed (and arguably challenging!!) group of couples, families and young kids and the staff managed all our asks without batting an eyelid.
The rooms are absolutely stunning with every detail thought of and the entire property is everything you could want from a boutique property with a beautiful pool and easily accessible surroundings.
The food is amazing and provided a great mix for all our various guests- from traditional Sri Lankan to pancakes to salad.
We all agreed it was a trip for the aHes and we can’t wait to get back!
Thank you so much and hopefully see you soon - in Galle or Gal Loya!
After a refreshing swim in the boutique pool we enjoyed a delicious, fresh and exotic breakfast including juice tonics and first class coffee to kick start the day. Dinner includes many traditional options and the freshest seafood, followed by delicious cocktails and desserts to complete a full days travel.
The old building has been beautifully restored to its former glory as the manor of a late spice merchant at the turn of the century.
Michael and our hosts were more than accomodating even taking the time to place us in a romantic couples villa at a respectable distance from the children!
We loved our stay !
The hotel is an old Colonial house built by a Spice Merchant on the hill just outside the Galle Fort area. It has been lovingly rebuilt, refreshed and redecorated by Millie, Tim & friends to reflect the heritage of that time and the region. This is a one off. Each room is unique. Beds are perfect. Aircon a must! There are no mass brand hotel amenities here. Everything is personal.
Especially all the people making your stay a pleasure. They made the experience for us. From helping us with airport transfers from our very delayed flights, to getting clothes locally (thanks FLY EMIRATES. NOT!) to organising tuk-tuks everywhere, day tours, special treats by the pool... To Ronald and Roshan thanks!
The food and drink were absolutely top notch and even when items were not available the team made a plan, the Chef is marvellous and everything is delicious. We ate there more often than we planned because the food was so good. Sri Lankan breakfasts are a must!!
To Umar for the fab cocktails and service, cheers!
But most of all to Priyantha, who epitomised 5 star service and care. He is a credit to the staff there and his wonderful attention to looking after us was without peer. Cold water as we lay by the pool. Amazing spicy curry leave cashews as a beer snack, dinner service. Nothing was too much trouble.
All of the staff treat you like family. Wonderful, kind and gentle people.
There are of course always some items or areas for improvement, Wi-Fi was intermittent for me in our room, despite best attempts to repair it, and a chalkboard for daily available food items would be good, also make sure you have the cost of day trips clear before you go. Some of the expeditions don't match up to what the cost is (not the Sun House's fault)...but these are minor items lost against the good feeling we have from this trip.
We would go back in a heartbeat. We miss our Sri Lankan family!
The rooms were so heavenly and we were so well taken care of by the team. I had to add a picture of our bathroom which divine - facing the jungle. The property itself is beautiful.
It was really great to be so close to the Galle fort (minutes away by Tuk) - had amazing dinners there too. Can’t wait to come back.
"Tuk tuks are an easy way to travel around Galle and can be obtained outside the property or called by the staff. The walk down is fine."Read full review
