Closenberg was built by Captain Bayley in 1860 on top of a peninsula overlooking Galle harbor and the Indian Ocean. Since 1889 it belongs to the Perera Abeyewardene family and is today preserved as a heritage hotel. Large spacious halls, long verandas adorned with antique furniture and terraced gardens are in keeping with Dutch architecture. High ceilings resting on tall round columns and large louvered Teak doors set in arched doorways permit the flow of cool air. Alongside an experience of Sri Lanka's rich colonial past, we offer our guest a welcoming atmosphere, fine dining and an unparalleled view. Closenberg Hotel unique features are: The best location at the middle of Galle Harbor, Uninterrupted seaview from all our rooms, Direct access to beautiful sandy beach ideal and safe for surfing and swimming in all seasons, The unique and timeless elegance of an old Sri Lankan Heritage Hotel often copied but so hard to achieve, A sophisticated blend of service, tradition and cultural experiences Luna Terrace Bar Lounge is the funky trendy place to go and be seen in Galle. Great selection of cocktails, top brand spirits, tapas and fine cafe food. The new infinity pool overlooking the surf of Magalle Bay is a "must have experienced". Closenberg is the ideal gateway for enjoying the beauty of Southern Sri Lanka!

Detailed Reviews
Closenberg Hotel has a history of over 150 years and you can really feel the ambience of that by gone era when you step into that beautiful old building.
It is also located on a breathtaking location, perched on a hillock between the Bay of Magalle and the Galle Harbour, with great views of the Dutch Fort and Rumassala.
The room was decent, well furnished and had a balcony overlooking the bay. There is a beautiful infinity pool overlooking the bay, which is now managed by an Italian duo who operate a Pool Bar named Bacuzzi. They have plans of introducing an Italian restaurant as well quite soon.
We only had breakfast at the hotel but it was decent and the quantity was quite generous. One has a choice of Eastern or Western breakfast although the options are limited given this is a small hotel.
Given its fabulous location and grand old building that is the hotel, I wish it was better maintained. Even the gardens could be done up to look nicer.
Overall, I.would recommended this hotel to anyone who appreciate the grand old world charm of the bygone era.

This is situated in a beautiful location but when we entered to the hotel we felt it is not well maintained and neglected. Their sevice was good but food was not that much taste.
I suggest if they maintain that hotel in a good condition they can get better business.

The rooms come with an amazing view of the indian ocean. Closenberg seems to be a heritage hotel perched atop of a low lying cliffside corner of Galle beach.
Mornings here are a wholesome treat for the soul accompanied by heartful(Sri Lankan preferred)breakfast followed by equally delicious meals. The hotel is laced with a skirting pool and cute front gardens ahead of every room. Beds are big, soft and fluffy. Though located in what seems to be a busy part of Galle, the hotel is nestled in a quieter corner, therefore, making it the perfect quaint getaway!

can't rate this place at all. We had a wedding there yesterday and we got a very bad experience there. Only the taste of lunch is Ok but nothing else. Their service is really bad when we asked to serve guests, they ask us to serve the other guests and they don't know how to talk to a guset of us. And they have done some durty thing at the plate count.they added extra count of plates we didn't used. We have all the proofs for what they have done. We trusted their brand name and reputation but didn't meet with our need.very disgusting!

It was so good that we stayed twice, rearranging our trip so we could end it there as it was a total highlight. Staff were unbelievably kind and helpful, they were so wonderful with our wee baby that it felt like a home away from home. Best drinks in Sri Lanka, food was delicious and it’s just got a generally cool vibe. Beaut view and location, close enough to the action but just away so you can feel like you’re on your own secluded island. LOVE Closenberg, take me back!!!

We had a 2 day staycation here and loved it. The rice & curry was the best we had in the south coast of Sri Lanka and the view from the pool is just unbeatable. There was a music evening while we were there and the music was really good too! Really enjoyed this place.

Absolutely spectacular! My recent stay at this exquisite property left me utterly spellbound. From the moment I set foot on the grounds, I knew I had stumbled upon a true gem. The location itself seems plucked from the pages of paradise, with its breathtaking vistas and serene ambiance.
Let's talk about the food—prepare your taste buds for a symphony of flavours! Each dish presented with meticulous care and bursting with mouthwatering deliciousness. And the staff? Well, they're simply unparalleled. Their warmth and hospitality made me feel like royalty from the moment I arrived.
The sea-view room, oh, what a marvel! Its ethereal charm and mesmerising vistas made it nearly impossible to tear myself away. And don't even get me started on the infinity swimming pool! The fact that it's filtered with salt water from the sea adds an extra touch of luxury that's simply unparalleled.
This place truly has a way of calming the soul and rejuvenating the spirit. I have absolutely no complaints. None whatsoever! I would not hesitate for a moment to return to this idyllic haven, and I wholeheartedly recommend that everyone experience its magic at least once in their lifetime. Trust me, you won't regret it.

This afternoon during a scooter trip I stopped at this hotel to have a drink and take a dip. We were kindly received by a man and said this was okay. There was a friendly young man standing at the pool bar. It is a fantastic location but unbelievable how far reaching glory it is. There was literally no one in sight. Swimming pool was very dirty and the tiles on the edges were literally falling down. After 45 minutes we paid for the drinks and walked past the reception. We were told that we had to pay 4000 rupees because we had used the swimming pool. This is not indicated anywhere and was not informed to us in advance. 4000 rupees for this state is definitely not worth it. If we had known this afterwards, we would have continued.
