Hotel's Favourite
My family and I stayed for an amazing weekend at Amangalla, and it just might be the hotel with the best service in Sri Lanka.
The Good:
Amangalla is lovely. It's maintained well with wooden floors and great amenities. The staff is friendly and quick. The rooms are spacious and the beds are so very comfortable. The aesthetic is calming and enjoyable.
Because it is in Galle Fort, we could easily step out and explore. And each time we did that, we came back to find that the room service was done. This meant that room service was done several times a day, which only made us feel like we were royalty and well taken care of.
The breakfast and high tea were exceptional with great options. The one time we had dinner, it was delicious.
The Bad:
We regret not staying there for a couple of extra nights.
The Unique:
Amangalla is a building with a lot of history tracing back to over 400 years. This is the second Aman property we have been to, and it certainly won't be our last. It has left a lasting impression with its location, the food, the experience, the staff and the service that they carefully provided.
I would encourage anyone to stay here. It's a one of a kind property with amazing service.

This Aman property had a tremendous amount of historical charm. The service was very good . the room which was upgraded was a bit small and sparse, but had incredible wood floors and a beautiful balcony overlooking the pool area. The staff was attentive and always willing to assist anyway they could and the GM was very professional.
The breakfasts and lunch were very nice on the open lobby level. We did opt for thei Sri Lankan special dinner which had a dozen or more specialities of which most I could not eat, which was disappointing. Ther was no gym nor air conditioning in the common areas and lobby restaurant which was uncomfortable even in February. There was no TV , but the hotel did have WiFi. WE did want to use the spa facilities but they were booked so did not have the opportunity to see/ review.
The butler for our room was exceptional and took us on a walking tour or the historic fort area for 1 1/2 hours. We liked this hotel more than the Amanwella but again found it wanting with regards to other Five Star Deluxe Hotels like the Four Seasons hotels which we have stayed at on all 5 contingents.

This is a stunning hotel in every aspect. Despite being in busy touristy Galle Fort, Amangalla is an oasis of calm and extraordinarily high service - all housed in a magnificent colonial era hotel steeped in history. The staff are amazing from Peter the GM who is out to help in every and any way possible to Indika who is the most wonderful proud staff member for whom absolutely nothing is too much trouble. He exudes pride for his job, which is to make you feel part of the Amangalla family. Try for a room on the top floor as the sunsets are magnificent. No lifts though...they can’t install them as it’s a heritage building. But definitely worth the climb!
The pool area is beautiful and the pool itself huge given you are right in the middle of the Fort. The spa is superb and the massages out of this world, as is the hydro therapy section, which you have all to yourself. And the food also comes highly recommended , especially the gorgeous breakfasts and cream teas....all served to perfection.
This is very high end yet understated luxury in a fabulous heritage building and in the midst of an extraordinary heritage site. Stay here if you possibly can - even as a one night treat. You won’t regret it!

We spent some wonderful days in the Amangalla hotel. The colonial style hotel is a fairy tale. The rooms equally. The well-kept gardens. The cleaning staff are very attentive to everything to make you feel at your best and very discreet. The staff were very kind and always helpful and smiling. We have had a Butler named Pathum, really professional and nice and always very kind as well as available. All pool staff HK Team caring especially Mr. Prasad. Not to mention the hotel restaurant staff, really helpful and kind. We had full Pension and ate the deliciously cooked Sri Lankan specialties. I who have problems with spices, they cooked food for me without it. Very flexible. However, you can also eat internationally. We have to thank the Front manager of the hotel, Mr. Jeewantha Wahrschavithan for all the organization, concern and availability. Truly an unforgettable stay.
Thanks again for letting us have some unforgettable days before our return to Europe. Kind regards
Stefano Marenzi

This is our 8th Aman property. Set in a historic property (former Dutch administration office) everything is immaculately kept. Our suite was large, and so very comfortable. Beautiful furnishings. Everything works. I especially liked the spa. While there are treatments available, I took advantage of the sauna, steam room and whirlpool - all private! Be sure to book it ahead. It was like having a private spa. And the service is second to none. There are so many people waiting to help, including 2 people dedicated to the half dozen rooms on our floor. Every time you enter the hotel there is a cold towel waiting for you. Need something? Just ask. OK, staying here is not cheap, but you get the clear sense you’re getting something for your money.

I came to Galle for the day and was eager to try the Amangalla spa as I could not stay the night. They got me an appointment as soon as I finished my lunch at the restaurant (which had excellent Sri-Lankan food, must give it a try). As soon as I arrived at the Spa, I was greeted by the friendly receptionist. The service here is up to Aman standards. The ambiance was relaxing and had the minimalist, colonial style to it which you rarely find in Sri Lanka. She explained to me that I had to fill up a form etc and gave me fresh juice and a cold towel. Then I was approached by the masseuse who was really nice and introduced herself. She then took me to the spa rooms which was dark and had candles everywhere. It was beautiful. I got a back, neck, head and leg massage and it was amazing. She did it so well and it was not compareable to the other spas I have been in Sri Lanka. She made sure I had the most relaxing time. After the massage she said I could have a shower in the private bathroom in the spa room. It was decent sized and had everything that I needed to freshen up. I would definitely come here again and stay the night next time. It has to be the best spa in Sri Lanka and if you have a chance, go!

From the moment we arrived in the vehicle supplied, we were greeted at the front door with cool towels and drinks. The front part of the property is from the 1600s and was the Dutch Commanders private residence. Our room was large and well appointed. I particularly liked the walk-in shower and the large bathroom, the makeup mirror was perfect. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and the housekeeping was immaculate. The restaurant and chef is to be congratulated, the food was amazing, my favourite was the Thai Beef Salad from the luncheon menu. The pool area was lovely with good amenities and service, as was the spa. As it was Christmas when we were there, we were spoiled with small gifts, but the nicest surprise was the beautiful Amangalla leather luggage labels on all our bags as we departed, thank you!
Mr Sean Flakelar, as Manager, you and all your perfectly trained staff are to be congratulated.

Beautifully located in Galle Fort, this historic building oozes charm and comfort, we were greeted on the steps by the Front Office manager Jeewantha and our designated butler for our stay Indika. A short tour to show us the various facilities such as the calm, cool library room, the wonderful pool with sun beds and cabanas, the spa, yoga space, even a gentleman’s barbers, and we were shown to our chamber room.
These rooms are a generous size, with a large lounge area, ours had a four poster bed, but the facilities are modern and contemporary. Truly lovely.
Unfortunately our luggage was delayed by the airline in Doha, but the front of house staff and Indika especially, worked diligently to solve the problem, even arranging a courier to collect the luggage when the airline seemed to have difficulty finding a driver! We’re immensely grateful to the staff of Amangalle who did their absolute utmost to minimise the disruption to the beginning of our two weeks in Sri Lanka, without them our longed for holiday might have been very different.
It’s attention to service like this that makes this hotel stand out, every member of staff is the most helpful, attentive and efficient you could hope for, as an example Amila , cleaned and reset our room in the half an hour we were at breakfast. Amazing. The bellboy, Gayan was always so full of smiles - nothing was too much from any member of the team. Made us feel like we were family.
Thanks Amangalla, you surpassed everything we could have hoped for and turned what could have been stressful and disappointing into a relaxed and wonderful stay.

With soaring arched windows and highly polished dark wooden floors, Amangalla offers a hushed patrician oasis in the middle of this hot tourist town. From the moment one climbs the stairs to this place of privilege and takes a seat in the cool, elegant hotel lobby with its ceiling fans, perfectly arranged wicker chairs and inviting sofas, one never wants to leave. Every detail embodies the graciousness and grandeur from another time. And yet the hotel could not be more comfortable and welcoming and calm - a real oasis,
Staff members are pitch perfect - helpful but not overbearing. The clotted cream and scones at tea time are as scrumptious as one might find at Claridges. The pool in a secret garden complete with shaded cabanas where one can sip lemongrass tea and lime is the perfect hideout to recover from jetlag and long days of touring. Want a yoga mat in your room? No problem. Want tea and scones by the pool? Absolutely. How about the freshest fish in Sri Lanka served with first rate wine? You got it. The warm welcome by Karen Merrick, Amangalla's manager only hints at the elegance and grace that awaits the weary traveler who is lucky enough to visit this meticulously run very special place.

Dear Happy Guest, Thank you kindly for taking the time to write such a warm and informative review, it truly helps future guests understand the property better as well as the offerings. We like to think of Amangalla as a sanctuary, somewhere where time can stand still as you recharge from the vast amount of experiences this wonderful Island has to offer... it's also the reason we include a hydrotherapy experience (there is nothing better than a dip in the massage pools, and alternating sauna and steam, before a cold water therapy) to rejuvenate after elephants, beaches wildlife, temples, architecture, cinnamon and of course... Tea! Talking of which, we are delighted that you enjoyed ours along with our homemade (Scottish style) scones, clotted cream and delicious strawberry jam... another inclusion needed after an exploration around the Fort... just to keep your energy levels up. As you now know, we don't think of Amangalla as a hotel, but rather a home... and one where we like to treat guests the way we would if dear friends were visiting our home for the first time, sincerely and thoughtfully and so glad you felt this. We hope to be able to look after you again one day and until then, wish you many joy filled memories of your time in Sri Lanka and of course Amangalla. warmly and with gratitude, Karen Merrick General Manager - Amangalla kmerrick@aman.com

We visited Sri Lanka a few months back and ended up at Amangalla for the last three nights of the tour! We wanted to end the trip on a High note and our travel consultant at the time suggested this and boy were we pleased! The Ambiance , the service , the food and the history of the hotel itself was just breathtaking! Being a History buff, my husband loved everything about the place! We stayed at one of the suites and it was just magnificent. The hotel staff suggested so many activities during our days at Amangalla, however since we had already booked most of our tours for our stay with our Local Travel agent (Sri Lanka In Syle), we were unable to try those offered by the hotel! But nevertheless appreciated the efforts in giving us suggestions.
My personal favorite was the whole ambiance at night at Amangalla! And ofcause the Spa! Just amazing!
We were skeptical travelling given what happened last April in Sri Lanka, We were even going to cancel our trip but decided to push through in the end! And we are so glad that we went ahead with our plan! Once we were in Sri Lanka, the hospitality we got really put us at ease! It has really taken awhile for me to put this review up but it is well deserved!
