Described by guests as 'rustic charm', 'like a dream' and 'the Thailand we have been looking for.' Sang Tong Huts, nestled on a hillside on the outer edge of Mae Hong Son Township, is only 15 minute walk to the town center. Sang Tong Huts is a well established Guest House where, since 1987, guests have relaxed and enjoyed our natural setting. Sang Tong Huts, with its unique charm and character, appeals to our numerous international guests. Many guests arrive planning to stay a night or two but realize that it is the kind of place that is hard to leave. The garden setting has an array of wonderful plants, flowers, trees and bamboo varieties, and a relaxing space by the swimming pool. Our four individual huts, built with teak, bamboo and local leaf roofing tiles, all vary in size and design. All are well appointed with a balcony, great views, fan and private bathroom with hot shower and free Wifi.

A great place - friendly, really nice rooms. Much higher standard of decor, mattresses good, nice little swimming pool. Nicer than the majority of places in Thailand we stayed in this price range. Shocked at the bad reviews, if you're upset by insects or bothered by a few very friendly dogs (see their website) then you should probably stick to big bland hotels. It's about 15 minutes walk from the centre of town if that kind of thing bothers you, but basically we loved it.
I don't usually leave reviews on these sites, but the bad reviews here are sufficiently annoying and stupid to motivate me in this case.

Staying at Sang Tong Huts was the highlight of my stay in Mae Hong Son. All bungalows are beautifully designed with natural materials, each one has it's own character and beautiful decor to totally fit in with the environment. They are surrounded by a big garden with a pool.

I stayed in a hut called NIGHTSHIFT which was so beautiful...I didn't want to go anywhere..just sit on my veranda and lie on the amazingly comfortable bed...all pillows and quilts were bought by the owner from Germany!!!

The couple running the hotel did everything they could to make my stay enjoyable.

The Huts are situated on a hillside on the outskirts of Mae Hong Son...a 10 mins walk from the market. And Mae Hong Son is a peaceful town 300 klms west of Chiang Mai.

Sang Tong Huts is a wonderful place to stay and I highly recommend it to anyone who is travelling in that area.

We stayed 2 nights in hut Pentagon and really enjoyed our stay. The place is beautiful and very well maintained. Louise is a great hostess, she helped us planning a lovely daytrip. The girls working there are very kind too. They serve delicious breakfast! Don't miss this place when visiting Mae Hong Son!

Dear reader,

Since this isn't India, I'm allowed to use the following expression without offending anyone,.. HOLY COW!! This guesthouse is just wonderful!! I've been half the world over, but Sang Tong Huts is by far the best place I've been when it comes to the following:

1. -Quiet-
Be careful not to wake the trees while you're there, STH is a good half mile from the nearest traffic lights, meaning all the noise you get is from nature (including the 5 yappy/happy domestic dogs, friendliest bunch in Thailand, rest assured)

2. -Beauty-
I remember driving our motorbike up the driveway... We (my girlfriend and I) were stunned. What we saw reminded me of a colonial British jungle retreat. Tribal with a dash of civilization, as if Robinson Crusoe had prepared his Island home for housing guests. Attention to detail is astonishing.

3. -The Rooms-
Every room or hut is different, so I'll just describe ours. First off, it looked amazing, inside and out, woodwork with leaf-laid roof. Best bed we had in weeks, to quote my girlfriend, I which our bedroom to look and feel like this. It had a proper bathroom!! I've been to 4 and 5 star hotels whose bathrooms were half as nice as this one was. And the balcony, just wow.. I forgot to mention that this particular hut was at least 10 feet off the ground, so the balcony was right in the middle of a jungle, breathtaking! (the hut was called "Tree Tops") And yet again, details, wow.

4. -Facilities-
I can mount up and enter numerous details, but you just have to take my word on this. Everything you could ever imagine to need from a guesthouse gets washed away as soon as you walk into the main area and will be replaced by all the convenience STH gives you. Sit back relax and enjoy.

5. -Staff-
Only 2 girls work the Sang Tong Huts besides the owner. It's run like a sailboat, for you won't easily see the captain stand idly by. Everyone plays their part in this well oiled machine. Every room is prepared for new guests and spiced up when placed under reservation, if STH knows you are coming they'll make sure you'll feel welcome.

6. -Louise- (the owner)
I hope I spelled her name correctly, for she was a complete breath of fresh air. For 29 years she has invested all her love and devotion into Sang Tong Huts and that shows for a full 100%. She traded Australia for Thailand in the 80's and together with her loved ones she added a radiant gem to this amazing country. She put more care and detail into this guesthouse than NASA put in the moonlanding. Knowledgable, kind, helpful, patient, caring and I never smelled better bacon at breakfast than at Sang Tong Huts, for she knows how to fetch you a proper start of the day.

If you ever visit Mae Hong Son, do yourself a favor by staying at Sang Tong Huts for as long as you can/need, it will be the place you'd wanna take pictures off to show your friends and family how beautiful and relaxing your time in Thailand is. Whether you are a budget backpacker, midrange traveller or top end tourist, Sang Tong Huts will give you the rest you need, want or thought you already had.

It took me two years to come to Mae Hong Son since the recommendation of Koy’s husband. He told me that Mae Hong Son was extremely beautiful . I searched from internet that it was a valley town and full of mist in February . Ping also told me that he came to Mae Hong Son once at his primary school days. All he remembered , was it took more than 1800 curves to drive up there. Then here was what I saw in Mae Hong Son ....,

I booked San Tong Huts via booking.com to have 2 nights stay there. Immediately I got a response from the owner . Her in depth introduction of the town convinced me to further extended my stay to 5 nights. Indeed , it was really a small town , not so many tourists , and people barely speak English . But you could easily encountered friendly faces around you . It was hot in November, in fact , hot and humid. There was a beautiful lake and temples at town centre. Wat Chong Kham and Wat Chong Klang built in Burmese-style . No big shopping malls , just small shops and 7 -11 , (Louise told us that there were 5 in town), oh , but we saw Watson’s. It was a total of 15 minutes walk from Sang Tong Huts to town centre. It was Ok for me . I particularly loved the rural part of the place and I enjoyed walking in a strange place where your mind could set at ease while there were so many violence happened at home .

We stayed 5 nights at Sang Tong Huts . First time for me to stay at such residence . I loved the place with the first glimpse of it. It was like visiting a botanical garden there . Lots of trees ( as a city woman , I could not identify any of the trees there). Giant bamboos, the protected teak tree , bananas and papayas fruit trees all around you. Our hut was named ‘Nightshift’. It was the nearest hut close to the reception area . It was particularly good for those who carried heavy luggage and one with weak eyesight during the night. There was a balcony which I loved most . I woke up around 5 am and listened to to birds , frogs , cocks and whatever sounds from the nature , that was WONDERFUL. I remembered it rained one night and when the raindrops fell on the roof of the hut, tik tac ..tik tac ... just like footsteps of our lives go by .... morning came and it was time to have a nice breakfast . Wow , the most delicious muesli with yogurt I ever had since birth. I considered I could survive on those toast and yogurt only . But each day we had a big feast of favorable food in the morning . Life is getting beautiful with such an good start of the day......

Louise , the owner of Sang Tong Huts also helped us to arrange car for our tour to Su Tong Pae, Ban Ran Thai...... Yes, we did enjoyed our stay .....

Louise was really lovely to deal with, so helpful with local maps and suggestions, and all staff were lovely, and clearly very happy if their jobs (humming and singing!). Great pool area, incredible breakfast - the homemade muesli was wonderful - and the rooms themselves were great, beautifully decorated. We are so sorry not to have had more time here, it is a real paradise.

My husband n I have just spent 6 nights at 'the huts' Great 'experience' Authentic Thai styled housing, with variety in style n size. The manager Louise has great local knowledge and goes out of her way to help re tours n information. The helpers Ping n Noi are delightful girls. Breakfast is awesome. The 'huts' are nestled amongst the trees n bamboo. Swimming pool was a relaxing spot (changing room n towels supplied) A good walking distance from Mae Hong Son, a great sized town, easy to get around, some good eateries and wonderful sunday market, with hill people selling their food n wares. So worth taking the extra kilometres from Pai. Great value!!! Will be back!!

What a magical place to stay! The location, slightly outside of Mae Hong Song, is quite and idyllic. Each bungalow is different, and extremely clean and comfortable. The extra little touches, like a little living area and beautiful framed pictures make it feel like home. Louise, the owner, has lived in Thailand for many years and extremely knowledgeable about the area, its history and the best unknown spots to visit in the area. She is such a kind and gracious host that we hope to visit again soon! Thanks for the great experience!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay at Sangtong huts and Louise was amazing throughout. On the last day, we had problems with our bus out of MHS and she was very accommodating.
It is located in a quiet area, which is great after coming from noisy Pai. We The huts are amazing, the outsides are rustic and the insides are amazing - so beautiful and pretty amidst the surrounding forest. My favourite thing about the place though are definitely the dogs, they are the sweetest and we were so upset to leave them.
We had to stay an extra night because of the bus problem but we had no regrets - we were secretly glad we got to stay here another day!
Transportation was easy and cheap - simply rent a motorbike, Louise was a great help with that too. She made everything fuss-free and we have so much admiration for everything she's doing :)

Highly recommended!

Sang Tong Huts is friendly and quiet. Apart from occasional commercial flights flying low overhead. The night is full of the sounds of nature - frogs, crickets, the tsktsktsk of geckos, dogs, a squeak or screech of perhaps some kind of bird, even the hoot of an owl. The cottages are within shouting distance of one another. In the spaces of quiet in between, you hear the very loud falling of leaves.

Louise, the Australian partner and manager, is a warm, calm, reassuring presence who gets things done, full of local anecdotes and information, and an engaging dinner hostess. On the first night we had a group dinner at the guesthouse made by one of her workers, Da, who is ethnic Karen. There was a Thai-Yai (Shan) salad of pickled green tea leaves with lentils and soya beans, a Thai-Yai vegetarian nam-phrik - dip with deep fried garlic cloves and fermented soya, a vegetarian version of kabpi (fermented shrimp), eaten with boiled vegetables - bamboo shoots with glass noodles, and a few meat dishes. It was exquisite. Although we've been living in Bangkok for nearly 10 months now, it is our first time in Mae Hong Son and a wonderfully personal introduction to the food of the province. Thanks very much for your company over a memorable meal, Louise!

We are in Paul's Hut which has enough room for two persons. It is well built with a part-concrete frame, terracotta floors, natural ventilation in the high ceilings, a big-ish bathroom, a thatched roof. It doesn't include a kettle or a fridge. There's a large balcony. We didn't want to take one of the huts with an outdoor bathroom as it gets cold at night at this time of year.

We hate to complain especially when you can't ask for a lovelier manager than Louise but the double bed in Paul Huts isn't very comfortable - the springs pop, ping, crunch and creak with the weight of two adults at the slightest movement, it was the most uncomfortable night of 10 days so far in northern Thailand of the guesthouses we've been staying in of similar price range, so the next day we had to ask for an extra mattress on the floor. It was set up by the time we got back from our day trip draped with its own muslin mosquito tent. I found out later I wasn't charged for it. Sang Tong Huts is full of Louise's thoughtful touches and attention to detail like that. I had a restful night. Thanks very much, Lousie and Noi!

It's a bit of a dusty walk down a scruffy lane to the city. Bring a torch! Best enjoyed with your own transport.
