I stayed in this guesthouse for 2 days. The first day it was full, so I did a homestay for 100baht. The next day, I was a private room with shared bathroom for 150 baht. The woman in charge was perfectly lovely as were her kids. Her husband was cordial enough the first day. However, there were complications with the tour I booked with them (the other person on the tour fell sick) and they were trying to charge me more, so I decided to do it by myself. His attitude changed towards me after this, and he was extremely antagonistic, flinging all sorts of character insults and shouting. Another couple who stayed here had a similar experience. The location is fine and the rooms are ok for the price, however the man's negative vibes completely ruined my stay.

Johnnie's is a perfect and really cheap place for visiting the quite Mae Hong Song and surrounding. In the center and on the nice lake for a really chilled journey. The owner is really helpful and funny and when I called him because I forgot some staff in the room he woke up early the day after and sent me my things to Chiang Mai with the 7am bus. I hope to meet him again and sleep in his guesthouse. Thanks s lot Johnnie

Mae Hong Son is a small town and Johnnie House is centrally located and provided great value.
It's right next to the lake with easy access to food, night market, people watching.

We paid 300 baht for ensuite in High Season (December). I suspect a lot cheaper in low season.

I was not able to get hot water in the shower - luke warm at best. Maybe it's just my room, I don't know. The bed was comfortable.

WIFI signal was strong and available in the room. It's not YouTube fast but quite good for emails, skype and surfing.

The host was friendly.

My partner and I stayed here on a recommendation from another traveler. So we were expecting a really welcoming atmosphere. The owner was nice enough until we mentioned that we might not use his services as a guide. Immediately his persona changed and he refused to acknowledge us at all (he just stared at the ground and ignored any further attempt at conversation). His attitude was very unsettling and after this interaction we looked a little closer at some of the other reviews on this site and it confirmed our unease. This guy is a creep and we left quickly the next day to stay somewhere that felt safe.

Would NOT recommend! I won't go into detail but the owner just wants your money and doesnt care at all how you feel. VERY unfriendly, narcissistic man. His wife is lovely though. I stayed here for two nights. The rooms are ok and only 150 bath but there are a lot similar cheap places with normal staff nearby.

Luckily found this really cheap descent place right next to the lake in Mae Hong Son. Its low season now so the guesthouse was a bit quiet but got a double room and bed to myself for 150b.... Good if you're doing things on the cheap and want a central location. Staff friendly and helped me by advising places to see and where to eat and rent scooters etc. also they do laundry there for super cheap. Definitely not 5 star but good value for money.

My girlfriend and I stayed for two nights in an outside rom (double bed w/ fan) for only 150 baht/night (not sure how much more the nicer "inside" room are). There was a decent outdoor shared bathroom with a hot water shower. The lady that runs the place is very friendly and speaks a bit of passable English. She tried to get us to book a tour with her (through her friend's company) but it was expensive-- I highly recommend just renting a motorbike for a 150 baht/day and driving yourself to the local attractions (Karen long neck village, waterfall, fish cave, etc.). The room was clean, but simple. The bed was firm, but comfortable. They don't have food or coffee at Johnnie House but the it is close to everything-- the location is perfect. There is a back gate that opens to Jong Kham Lake with a beautiful view of the temple on the opposite side. Also, at night vendors with street food and the usual handicrafts set up around the lake and sell things til about 9 pm. For food, I'd recommend walking half-way around the lake to Salween-- great Thai and Western food. For something to do nearby and free, walk (about 20 minutes) up to Mae Hong Son mountain wat (Wat Phrathat Doi Kong Mu) for sunset or sunrise-- beautiful view over the whole town and into the mountains.

I was staying there one night and I completely agree with the first review. Perfect place if you are traviling on a budget and not looking for something amazing.

This is the best place to book a trekking trip to the Karen villages as the owner organizes treks by himself and will guide you to the most remote and amazing villages. The guide speaks good English. He also speaks Karen and this is a must as the Karen don't speak thai. Soi organizes treks as you want, from 1 to 6 days. I had great fun on a two days trek and this was the highlight of my two months holiday. It was uniquie experience in my life to stay together with the Karen and sleep in their huts.

Also the service of Johnnie Guest House was great. The drove us for free to rent motorbikes, drove us to the bus station to get our tickets in advance, etc. I can just recommend this place for the basis of your trek.

It's what we describe as 'thai' style. It was 300 baht for the double with ensuite and was okay and right on the lake. If you are wanting luxury, this isn't for you, but if you want clean and sleepable with a great hot shower, then this is for you. Noi is Johnnie's wife and is just fantastic. It's a great spot to just walk around the lake, look at the night markets and temples, if you are into that. Fine for sleeping, although we didn't get to sleep in because of other guests being up and about....but why would you sleep in, you'd miss something.

Johnnie House was a cheap place to stay with a nice location at the lake in the centre of Mae Hong Son. The owners were quite pushy with trekking and tours which we did not want to do. They said the AC was 100baht more than a fan room but when our friends wanted to pay extra for AC the next day as it was way too hot, the owners said it was “150baht today” with no other explanation. I guess it was a pay back for not going on a tour with them. It wasn’t a bad place to stay, it was definitely the cheapest we stayed in in Thailand, but the owners were too pushy. The bathroom was quite dirty but the wifi worked well.
