Will I recommend to friends and relatives? Yes
Will I go there again? Yes
The bungalow was very clean, comfortable and lovely furnished. The included breakfast was moderate, but this is often the case in Thailand.
The Gims Resort is situated very well. It's in the heart of Mae Hong Son, i.e. sights, shops and restaurants are in the close surrounding.
For our next stay in Mae Hong Son we would definitely choose the Gims Resort again and therfore we can totally recommend it.
We picked this place based on the high rankings it enjoys here on Trip Advisor. There's a lot to like about this place. But to decide if it is for you, you'll need to know the negatives up front with the positives.
Take a plat of land in the countryside, construct a perimeter of concrete or bamboo, build 1-bedroom bungalows around the perimeter, set up a common area for seating and reception, and plant bamboo, banana, and other canopy extending like plants throughout, and voila, you have a mini-hotel of sorts. That’s what the owner has done with this place about 1.4 km outside of the center of nearby Mae Hong Son, Thailand.
Pro’s
There’s about 7 concrete bungalows built on stilts on this complex. They’re solid — no flimsy wooden structures here. The rooms are well appointed, plain, with attractive off white interiors and teak-like colored wooden framing. The bed in our unit was solid and king size. There’s a desk for computer users, two chairs with a side table, separate bathroom, sink, and separate area for bathing or showering. A/C takes the form of the typical area unit. In our unit it blew directly on the bed.
Compared to much of the lodging you’ll find in this area, this place is pretty good.
The landscaping is canopy style flora and fauna — chiefly bamboo stands, banana and other plants. It's gorgeous and well laid out.
The reception building is a hut canopy type too. But it's quite difficult to see, especially at night, on initial arrival. We had no idea where to walk to check in until a staffer came out to great us. There's no signs point the direction to this area — at least, we didn't see them if there were any.
Con’s
There’s some negatives associated with this place.
First, the layout of the complex requires visitors to walk around the perimeter of the complex to access bungalows. This can be downright annoying if you're a new visitor arriving for the day, tired from a drive, with bags to haul to the room. The walkways are large stepping stones with gaps of mud in between. If you misstep in the dark, voila, you'll full of mud, not to mention the possibility of spraining or breaking an ankle and falling down. This discourages customers from cutting straight through the extensive landscaping to get directly to a room. That's the bad news. The good news is the landscaping is gorgeous.
Parking is limited and can be a tight fit for drivers with cars. During our stay, quite a few motorcycles were parked in front blocking places for cars to park. We're not sure if this place intentionally appeals and markets to motorcyclists or not — but it seems many were present during our visit. If so, we're glad they do — we're motorcyclists — and we'll make sure we ride our motorcycle if we come back. But this situation means a visitor could be leaving a vehicle outside of the complex at night when it is locked up at 10 pm.
This raises the next point. The complex closes at 10pm — that is the front gates are locked. Since this the perimeter is concrete, this makes this place pretty secure. We don't sense any security issues in the area — the complex borders fields outside of Mae Hong Son ... but we realize the owners are providing security for the confidence of visitors.
If you're hungry in the morning, you might not like staying here. Coffee, Tea, and cookies are complimentary 24-hours a day, but there's no full or partial service restaurant on the complex. Given this is a rural area, it's likely visitors will visit the town nearby for breakfast. This place is 1.4 km outside of town.
Distance from the town means you better have your own transportation to come and go from this place. This isn't an "arrive in town by bus and stop in place". You must have or hire transportation to get here.
Finally, some annoying features we noted with the unit. Our bathroom featured a separate room with a tub for a shower ... not particularly practical for hot, Southeast Asia. Towels were on a rack inside. And, a prolonged gurgling sound could be heard each time we used the shower or the tiolet. A separate area featured the sink with another room for the tiolet. Each of these rooms featured opened, screened windows, though which A/C air could leak during operation. We understand the owner is probably concerned with mold, but it's a bit nonsensical to offer units with windows that are open 100% of the time when it's likely that visitors will run A/C units.
Remember the muddy terrain between the stepping stones I talked about earlier? Well, the owners hope to encourage you to use their in house provisioned slippers found at the entrance to the unit. This makes sense as it could eliminate trafficking mud in the unit. But we found these slippers to be dirty and worn. Frankly, we had no desire to acquire Athletes Foot issues from other travels. We simply chose to walk barefoot or with our own footware inside the unit — defeating the purpose of the slippers to begin with.
WiFi is free and performance was OK. You'll notice TP Link routers in the bamboo stands throughout the complex. But it was turned off during the wee hours of the morning every day we were there. We just didn't feel like walking over the stones and the mud to the reception hut to wake someone up at 2 am to do anything about it.
Overall, this is a nice place to stay. But there are some annoying negatives to think about before booking. And it's NOT inexpensive ... about $67 USD per night. This is way too expensive for this area and this quality of lodging. One could find a nice hotel in town close to all of the action and amenities for 800 baht per night. We did — look up YIPA on the waterfront in downtown.
The staff were super helpful. Our car wouldn't start one evening so they helped us a lot - nothing was too much trouble. They called the mechanic for us first thing in the morning and even drove us in to town in the evening and picked us up after dinner too. There are also bicycles to hire for free so you can get about even though it is a bit far from the town centre.
We also left something behind and they kindly put it on the bus to Pai the next morning and we collected it from the bus station. Senee really helped us and the rooms were great so we'd highly recommend the stay here. The reception would make a great area for a bar or breakfast bar - they should set that up too.
Our villa - No 3 - was lovely. Cleverly decorated, it had everything we needed, a fantastic wet room with 'very' hot water and thick bath and hand towels, a separate toilet (a clever idea), the use of a hairdryer for my partner, and 4 bottles of complimentary water instead of the usual 2.
There is no on-site restaurant but don't worry, there is free tea (several varieties) / coffee / drinking chocolate / biscuits / fruit for you to help yourself to at any time.
Wifi in Reception was fast and reliable - unfortunately we couldn't get a signal from our villa.
The staff were extremely helpful; when one of the gardeners saw me wiping red dust off my motorbike she came running out with cloths and soap and insisted on cleaning it for me - true hospitality.
If you're in the area you should check it out for yourselves - you won't be disappointed.
The bungalows are set in beatiful gardens and are designed with a high attention to even the smallest details. The town centre is only 10 min bicycle ride away and the management will happily give you a lift into town at night. Free use of computer is provided in the lounge area and wifi is also available. Wide range of teas and healthy snacks provided is just what we needed after an active day out.
The resort is a short walk away from an excellent restaurant where you can also arrange to have your breakfast in the mornings.
It was definitely the most pleasant stay during our trip to Thailand and we would definitely go back in the future.
The bicycles offered to house guests are in great condition - everything works- owners and staff are attentive and helpful. We like everything about the place.
The place does not offer food but we got a bonus fruit and desert platter on our last morning which was great. Transport was provided to the airport.
"Rooms 5, 6, 7 all face over the fields, better in our opinion. room 1 is right at the car park so not the best option."Read full review
"Rooms 2 has twin beds and is fairly near the reception area so wifi should be better here"Read full review
