Only 15min from the train station and town, and perfect hosts who make you feel right at home. Wonderful log fires and cosy rooms that are spotlessly tidy. Shared bathrooms and toilets are not a problem, as there are not many rooms and it doesn't feel too crowded. The breakfast that come with the rooms is simply amazing, as is...

Lovely Japanese Pension set in a wooded area 5 to 10 minutes by car from the town centre (depending on traffic). Great shuttle service – wherever you want to go, whenever you want to go there. Modern interior with a convivial open-plan lounge area with wood-burning stove and hot drinks. Lovely, spotlessly clean rooms. No ensuite facilities but clean toilets...

This bnb is nicely situated up in the mountain surrounded by trees. Very cosy setting and friendly staff. The Italian Japanese fusion dinner was excellent, even with some good choices of Italian wines. I would award them a Michelin star!

This is a great place to stay as the service is superb and the owners are very friendly. "Taking over" the business from her parents (they are still there working!) who started this place in 1979, Keiko and her husband Toshi really put in lots of effort to make the place cozy. Dinner is optional and is Italian. I had...

I feel so lucky to have experienced Auberge Hidanomori. Picked up from the train station and driven by a lovely gentleman who insisted on carrying our bags and getting wet whilst providing us with umbrellas. From beginning to end this small hotel was outstanding. Sophisticated simplicity. Beautiful gardens, lovely comfortable rooms, yes the bathrooms are shared but it wasn't an...

I stayed here for 3 nights and it was my first time in Takayama. The hosts of this place were excellent and made my stay here very relaxing and comfortable. Had dinner here on two nights - the Italian food was superb! I would definitely recommend and visit this place again.

We too were worried about shared bathrooms, especially that I'm a neat freak. Let me tell you this place is spotless, you barely see anyone but I know the place was full but you don't hear a sound and it was just perfect. The owners go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. They picked us up from the...

Travelled from Tokyo to Takayama for 2 nights, the train trip took about 4 hrs. The scenery was magnificent once out of the cities. This hotel is a modern type of Royken, which offered everything except your own bathroom. We were aware of this and it was no concern. The shower rooms with hot tubs were great after a long...
