As said above, there is nothing to do in the area except visit an insensitive near the river or go up the rope way (very expensive and decent view, but done in an hour). It is quiet and slightly gloomy in the summertime, we were the only visitors in the ryokan and our hosts sis everything they could to make...

We went to the Alps specifically to stay in a traditional ryokan and whilst this building is a 'modern' one, the feeling is certainly traditional. We were greeted by the staff member with English language skills and she explained how everything works before taking us to our room, pointing out our Yukatas, explaining the onsen 'rules' and serving us green...

overpriced and run down. Some of the meal was delicious, the seafood element did not taste or smell fresh and I felt quite unwell the following day. Wouldn't recommend staying there in Autumn as all the surrounding places are closed so there was nothing much to do. The scenery is beautiful in the area so we went for a hike...

A lovely place, this ryokan does not get many western visitors and so spoils all those who come. We had a wonderful time and the food was astoundingly good. From here we explored the Kamikochi park and Takayama town.

We only stayed for one night here, but would have loved to stay for two. The area is stunning - the mountain views are beautiful. It is the perfect location to go and explore Kamikochi from for a day trip, or to go up to the top of Shin Hotaka ropeway. The Nohi busses are efficient and easy to get...

We were greeted by very friendly staff who showed us to our room offering tea and nibbles. The room was a lovely tatame mat room with futons and traditional Japanese decor (+TV & free wifi). We had both dinner and breakfast at the ryokan which consisted of several courses of fantastic Japanese cuisine (I'd recommend both). The ryokan also offered...

We stayed 2 nights in Ryokan Gizan late March 2014 and it was still chilly, about -5 to 5 degrees. We thought the heating in a ryokan would not be as good as a hotel but we were so wrong!! This place had the best heating, we were walking around in our underwear in our rooms. We had traditional futon...

The staff is extremely friendly and will go out of their way to meet your every need. Their English is sufficient to handle basic needs but of course they will appreciate if you at least try the odd sentence in Japanese. Needless to say, since this is a Ryokan and they don't have that many international guests, you'll have a...
