We stayed here for two nights, and after staying at another ryokan for one night I was concerned about the food as I'm a vegetarian and allergic to seafood (not an easy thing to be in japan!) I had emailed ahead the day before once I realised how restricted the meal selection is at another ryokan, and how difficult communication...

Stayed here Dec 2-4 2015. We actually checked out 3 hrs ago! This ryokan is known as a very old traditional roykan, even by locals. So do not expect a fancy modernized ryokan. It's basic but just knowing how old this place is, just makes ur stay that much special. We chose 2 meals a day option and stayed in...

Ryokan Tanabe has a marvelous staff, which is quite friendly and accommodating. The building does appear a bit aged, but well loved. We found the food to be excellent, and the location to be very easy for traveling to different parts of the city. The staff was knowledgeable about attractions and shops, and the ryokan is in easy walking distance...

Our one night stay was our first opportunity for us as westerners to experience a traditional ryokan. We have no basis for comparison with other ryokans however we thought our experience was exceptional. We arrived prior to check in and were greeted with a warm welcome, we checked our bags and went off to tour a bit of takayama. We...

Thus is a wonderful place to stay. The staff are so friendly and efficient. The food is first rate. We enjoyed the local beef as just one course amongst many. Rooms generous sized with good bathroom facilities. Futons comfortable to sleep on. There are also 2 Onsen baths, one for men and one for women. We both had the baths...

The staff are friendly, yet the facilities are quite old, with obvious signs of wear & tear. Food is not very carefully prepared; fish and seafood are not so fresh. The location is convenient, not very far from train station (about 10 min's walk).

This was one of my favorite ryokans in Japan. The rooms are absolutely stunning, the food is delicious, and the onsen was one of the nicest ryokan onsens I visited. The location is great, very close to a morning market and a short walk to the old town area. The ladies who run this ryokan are some of the friendliest...

This is our first ryokan experience and I wasn't sure about the bathroom/toilet situation in ryokans. The specifications are a little hazy and some ryokans do not have private bathroom/toilets at all. So to make sure we have our own bathroom/toilet, we booked the most expensive room - Yubokuan (medium room with private bath tub). I'm not sure if our...

We stayed 2N at Tanabe Ryokan in Takayama. It is our first time in Takayama, but 5th time travelling in Japan. Tanabe Ryokan is excellent in location - 5 mins walk to the old town, 3 mins walk to Miyagawa morning, surrounded by many quality Hida beef restaurants, and two 24 hours convenience stalls. We drove and parked at the...

We spent an amazing two nights at the Ryokan Tanabe in beautiful Takayama, Japan. It was the cap to a two-week trip throughout Japan and we were so happy. It was all perfect: amazing service as soon as we arrived (we could store our bags as we arrived before checkin), a well-sized and extremely well-appointed room, out-of-this-world meals, and a...
