Stayed here this week with my husband. Masayoshi Seue-san and his wife,Yukiko-san own this lovely place and are very involved. They remember you when you come back each day even though there are a lot of guests there. :) It felt like a cozy small ryokan despite its size and decor is very traditional. We selected a deluxe room with an irori in the room. I was really surprised and pleased to find out that we could actually use it. Obviously it’s not that warm but it’s super cool to light this little hearth in your room. Room was extremely large and spacious and had high ceilings. We even had a view of the lobby garden. I loved it. Was definitely one of the largest ryokan rooms we’ve had in our five visits to Japan. Meals served in a dining room and breakfast is at 7:00, 730, or 8:00. You can choose. I loved the Japanese breakfast and my husband was happy with Western. We did not do dinner here due to time constraints. There is 11 o’clock curfew but that is common And you’re so worn out by the end of the day all you want to do is relax anyway. Takayama station is a short walk from here. If you have a ton of bags you might wanna get a taxi but we walked with three bags, no problem. The entire friendly staff speaks very good English. I like to try to practice my Japanese, which is only so-so, but English speakers will have no problems here whatsoever.
Finally there is a coin laundry on property which is open from 8:00 am to 5:00. Detergent is included so you don’t need to buy any. Having a coin laundry is a big plus if you’re spending more than a week in Japan. I definitely recommend this place for visitors to Takayama and the surrounding areas who are visiting a ryokan for the first time and for those more experienced travelers.

I highly recommend Ryokan Asunaro.
1. Great location
About 10 minutes walk from the Takayama JR Station. Historical sites, such as Old Town, are within a pleasant walk.
2. Good size room and well equipped.
3. Very efficient and outstanding service
They work very hard to make sure that everything is satisfactory for their customers. They responded very quickly to our questions and requests.
4. I recommend to have their delicious beautifully presented Japanese breakfast and dinner.

Traditional Ryokan in Takayama, the room is spacious clean and with details for free like water and little cookies. The staff is helpfull they give you a lot of information (maps, restaurants...) in the check in, something unexpected. Breakfast has a good quality (traditional and the western one). 100% Recomendable if you look for a traditional stay. Is not Luxury but is correct.

Walking distance (with luggage ) from train and bus station. Very friendly welcome from the family owners, good English. We picked out our lovely kimonos and were then shown our room The room was very big and everything was shown to us including the Irori (sunken hearth ) which we didn’t light up but it did add character to the room. We really did enjoy all the traditional touches and there was so much to see everywhere. It was beautifully decorated and we noticed they had a laundry as well (didn’t use ). I, being a slightly older tourist quite enjoyed sleeping on the futon. They also helpfully booked us our restaurant for the evening. They give you a folder full of helpful suggestions for where to eat. We went to Tempura Ebihachi ( see my review), excellent and just around the corner. Book first. Next day we had the Japanese breakfast ( in our kimonos ) Not sure what some of the food was but we did enjoy it. Western breakfast is also available. There are lovely old traditional streets nearby to walk around. Again, owners really friendly and even gave us a little gift when we left.
We checked out quite early as one day a week they close so couldn’t leave our luggage with them whilst we explored ( we were catching a late train ) This wasn’t a problem as we took our cases and used lockers by the bus station, you could fit two cases into one locker. Train station also had lockers.
Thank Amanda T

About
Description
Asunaro Inn is a traditional style building made of 200-year-old materials brought from the historic Echigo area of Niigata Prefecture. I welcome foreign tourists to my inn with our warm hospitality and More homely atmosphere, and I would like them to learn about Japanese traditions, culture, and cuisine. Whenever you come to Takayama, please consider Asunaro Inn as your premier choice. Thank you very much. The building where the lobby is used to be an old landlord's house in the village on the mountain of Niigata prefecture and is built with thick Keyaki wood. This house was built without nails to withstand the high humidity and 4-5 meters of snow the area receives. Our lobby has a great reputation because it displays the consistency, simplicity, and serenity of the Japanese architecture style. We will preserve this cultural site. We are sure that all our guests will be pleased with the beauty of the old Japanese architecture. We promise you will feel relaxed and at home. Less

We arrived by train, but free parking is listed as one of the ryokan’s amenities.
