We're impressed by everything in this luxurious ryokan: from the 100+ years old farm house, to its rustic décor, panels, roof, layouts, open fire place (with its enormous teapot), in-house onsen, excellent service, in particular the meals which were sourced from local ingredients like mountain vegetables, Hida beef, local river fish, etc. and the thoughts and planning that went into...

It is a beautiful setting, the river and snow. The room was calm and warm. There is charm without a doubt. However in spite of the staff being pleasant and efficient, I found the experience to be rigid. Meal times are set in stone and eventually I got frustrated at being forced to eat at times the staff set and...

It was raining and we drove to the ryokan. We parked our own vehicle and has to carry our own luggage in. The staffs have limited in speaking English. Room is spacious but is quite cold. The ryokan do pick up/send off from station. We would like to give a thumb up for the Chef. We have so many surprises...

One of the highlights on our Japan trip. Warm staff and service and all-around excellent experience. Shuttle collects you from Takayama station and from there every detail is looked after. Food was exciting and inventive. Onsen on premises. Perfect relaxing stay. Much fun having hot sake by the fire after dinner. Strongly recommended.

What an incredible place!! They picked us up from the station and the drive to the hotel takes about 10 minutes. We were greeted by the staff who were incredibly friendly and helpful. The setting by the river is beautiful. The room fantastic and onsen very inviting. The food, both dinner and breakfast were exceptional. We stayed 2 nights so...

Stayed in Wanosato for during the Takayama festival. We have stayed in a number of ryokans before but Wanosato was definitely a highlight. As mentioned in other reviews, Wanosato is about 30 mins outside of Takayama and really gives you a feeling of being in the country. The greeting we received in the fireplace area really set the tone. The...

Wanosato is located about 30 minutes away from Takayama city. The ryokan looks very traditional and cozy. Next to the ryokan is a river, which add even more unique feel to the place. We stayed here for 1 night. Our room is a cottage type. There 4 seperate sections in the cottage. 3 tatami rooms and 1 bathroom. Since the...

This was the final Ryokan in our two week trip to Japan and was a great place to end our holiday. The place itself is not that convenient as it is a good 30 min drive from town so you need to arrange a pick up by the hotel or get a taxi (btw - there are plenty of taxis...

If considering coming to Wanosato you really ought to visit the Hida folk village in Takayama first. There you will see ancient houses of the region and the characteristics of their interiors and the lives their inhabitants lived in past centuries. That puts the experience into context. We drove to Wanosato and whilst sat nav got us to right outside...

We had high expectations for Wanosato, given the great reviews. It is charming in many ways (attractive setting, rooms, and onsen and good food well served), but here are some of the issues we encountered. Being cherry blossom season, when we made reservations nearly a year in advance, our party of two couples was required to take a single suite...
