We stayed a couple of nights at the Ryokan Sugimoto to experience this part of Japanese hospitality. As you'd expect, the service is outstanding and discreet, the rooms were comfortable (in the Japanese minimalist style) and the onsen was small and well maintained. The food is the real point however, a high-end multi-course meal each night and only slightly less...

We spent 2 nights here and were amazed by the experience - the staff were lovely and spoke English as much as they could (which we did not expect!), the rooms were large, quiet and beautifully clean and the food was outstanding. If you calculate the worth of the fantastic dinner (and breakfast, and onsen!) this is not expensive. The onsen is beautiful (inside and outside) and the room was a real ryokan room. Perfect service. Can't believe there were no more tourists!

The onsen facilities though small, has both indoor and outdoor and is...

This ryokan is a large building in Utsukushigahara onsen, thus away from Matsumoto, near the hills. A beautiful building, in which I got a large room that was as atmospheric as it was comfortable (with an en suite bathroom). Then onsen is very pleasant, especially the rotemburo. Food was not served in the room, but in a very classy dining...
