Being the first onsen experience the ryokan does a really good job in checking all hard product facilities with having a private onsen bath in your room. For us the raining weather and the hot baths really made for the perfect relaxing vibe which we were looking for. The dinner itself was really nice and certain dishes were perfect while others could be improved upon but that i guess is a personal perference for all. As upon booking you will realise that such stays are not cheap but keep in mind that at this accomdation the concept is more self service based compared to having a attendent cater to your every need so do consider this before booking. Overall, I walk away as a satisfied customer.

Excellent location 3 min walk from the Hakone Rail Station. Plenty of parking spaces if you drive. Stayed in a spacious semi-Japanese room with a lovely cypress bath running natural hot-spring water on the balcony. Comfy bed, clean room with good facilities. Both public and private onsens available in a bush natural environment. Yummy traditional Japanese breakfast and full course dinner plus free drinks or beer. Nice view in the breakfast room with a water wheel in misty landscape (from the hot spring water underground). Friendly attentive service, children friendly. V good value for the price.

It is my second time to visit this onsen hotel and it was as good as three years ago. Room is spacious and clean, food is superb.

They provide free ramen and beer for a snack which is perfect after onsen.

Traveled with my 2 years old toddler and it’s family friendly. Although mean was a bit expensive for kids. ¥3800 for dinner.

No railway to the hotel now but bus from JR station was easy. Will stay again.

Mediocre at best. Uncomfortable rooms, unappealing dining and dining room. I've been to a far nicer ryokan some years ago.

Worst here are the outdoor, scantily canopied passageways that - if your room is in their "annex -- force guests (to access dining room) to traverse those outside passageways in what for us was rainy cold weather. We got soaked.

Unlike that other ryokan, Setsugetsuka served no food recognizable as Keiseki (Japanes haute cuisine); this food was far from elegant. Fine Keiseki is worth expereincing.

Setsugetsuka was the worst part of our Smithsonian Journeys tour.

Our short stay at the Hakone was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. They give you kimonos and monk outfits to help you get in the spirit of the thing. The onset bathing facilities are terrific and the whole place is comfortable and beautiful. The food was great. You really get a feeling for the traditional Japanese style of travel and life.

Express Train from Tokyo to Odawara and change another train to Gora. Arrived earlier at the hotel and luggage storage. We visited Gotemba Outlet and return to Hotel at 630pm. Dinner was arranged at 730pm. Nice and spacious room with onsen inside the room. Experienced the private onsen in the early morning before having breakfast. Good & comfortable stay.

feeling like a prisoner standing in line for any kind of move made. for 200 Dollars per Person per night I was expecting more! the worst of what Japan can offer combined! Robot like service staff, most uncomortable sofa/bed in the room ever. we even had a big hole on the wall in our room! the private hot springs seemed dirty. overall a terrible experience, I would everybody recommend to avoid this hotel! Japan has so much to offer, but this!?

There was a lot of unpleasant things about Setsugetsuka, during my stay. That includes slow and bad service, angry looking staff that never smiles, a not very clean room with huge bugs, etc...but the WORST, was it's lack of security. =The creep standing in front of my room!

Before my check out, I decided to use my "private" open air bath. I prepared the water, and just before getting in, I realized how close the street was to my balcony.

This curtain(?) only closes half way, and it made me feel like people in the street could see me, since I could clearly see them.

Luckily, while wondering if I should finally take my Yukata off and bath, or not, I saw this mid aged man walking in, through the hotel's TWO "security red cones", and entering the property. He stood right there, several meters away, and started checking out the balconies. (every room balcony has its own bath).

He had a cigarette in his mouth, as he pretended to have entered private property for a smoke.
I panicked and started shouting at him to leave. he calmly said "oh sorry" in Japanese, and walked away, passing the red cones again. I could have taken a photo of him, but I was freaking out and did not think of it, in the moment.

I told the general manager of Setsugetsuka what happened, and that they should have better security, and definitely a security camera. He gave me a "soft apology" and did not seem to care very much about this disgusting happening. By the way this creep acted, it's very clear that it was NOT his first time doing it.

Any stranger could easily enter this Ryokan and watch people bath, in their balconies,(or even other baths?) during the day or night, WATCH OUT!

Again, there is no security and no kind of cover/ curtains on the front part of the room private bath. only it's side, for some strange reason, has a curtain/protection.

Worst Ryokan ever.
Worst hotel stay I've ever had in Japan.

My family of four booked two japanese/western 36m2 rooms and stayed 1 night - 1st Dec on the 4th floor facing the garden at Setsugetsuka Hotel. We booked through Odakyu Travel at 21,900yen/person/night which includes breakfast and dinner and all taxes.

We were treated to ice-cream upon arrival and got to choose nice yukatas near the small shop on level one. The standard ones are in the wardrobe.
At the entrance of each room is an area for wearing shoes/wooden Japanese slippers. The brightly lit toilet fitted with washing facilities is located opposite this. You can choose to sleep on the mattresses on raised platform or futon on the floor where the table and chairs are. A wooden bathtub is provide for soaking at the balcony. The water is not hotspring water though. Separated bathroom/basin are adjacent to it. The room is very spacious, bright and airy with free internet. It is the biggest room during our entire stay in Japan. Besides yutakas, there is another set of shirt/pants provided. You can wear either to go to the hotsprings. I find the shirt/pants very comfortable. Two lovely baskets are provided to put personal belongings when visiting the hotsprings.

We loved the private outdoor hotsprings as the water temperature was just right. There are 3 such hotsprings in the hotel besides the public indoor and outdoor ones. No booking is required as long as it is unoccupied. If the light in the birdhouse corresponding to each private hotspring is turned on, it means it is occupied. We soaked 3 times during our stay. Loved it! Free flow Yakult provided along the corridor near the hotsprings.
Japanese dinner and breakfast and were good. Complimentary ramen provided for supper after 10pm.

It is the nearest hotel to Gora Station, less than 2mins’ walk and there is a direct bus going to Gotemba Premium Outlet from the bus stop no 2 opposite the hotel. It will stop outside the outlet. There is no transfer needed. First bus is at 9.40am. Journey was about 55mins. These were 2 reasons why I choose this hotel. There are also many shops outside the Gora Station but these usually close before dinner since dinner is provided by all hotels in Hakone. They catered mainly to the tourist crowds in the day.

Would recommend to stay here if you don’t mind paying through the nose. For more pictures, refer to travelisveryfun.blogspot.com

We were on the 3rd floor of the Moon building. The rooms were good and the views from the balcony were fine. It was overlooking the greenery of the hotel grounds. As were stayed for 2 nights, we tried both types of dinner menu and at different dinner timing (to go to the private onsen). For us, we enjoyed both types of dinner.

You are only allowed in the private two person onsens at their facilities. All other onsens are prohibited as you must be fully naked in all onsens. Other than that as long as your clothed you're good. Does my aforementioned answer your questions?
