Detailed Reviews
Hakone Onsen was like stepping into a peaceful retreat from the busy world. The hot springs were soothing, with steam rising against a backdrop of mountains and lush greenery. Staying in a traditional ryokan, I enjoyed tatami rooms, a delicious multi-course meal, and a quiet, private onsen under the stars. It’s the perfect blend of culture, nature, and relaxation—a true escape that felt timeless.

We had a wonderful stay. Although the hosts spoke extremely little English, and we spoke even less Japanese, an electronic translator helped out. The rooms were very clean and very comfortable (keep in mind that the beds were futons), the breakfasts were great, and the dinner the one night we booked was exceptional and worth doing at least once. A lot of little touches. Most impressive were the hosts -- as but one example, on our last day it was pouring rain and a delay in the arrival of our taxi put our travel plans at risk ... the owner/manager spontaneously offered to drive us to a bus stop/taxi stand, which he did. On another evening, he arranged for a (free) lift to and from a restaurant in the neighborhood that was a little out of walking distance at night. Throughout our three-day stay, the hosts and staff couldn't have been more helpful. And, of course, the onsens were terrific.

A trip to Hakone’s hot springs is pure relaxation. The natural onsen, surrounded by stunning mountain views, is the perfect escape from daily life. The ryokan experience, with delicious kaiseki meals and soothing baths, makes it unforgettable. A must-visit for anyone seeking peace and tradition.

This place exceeded our expectations in terms of the food; dinner, especially, was over the top with one delicious, beautifully presented course after another. The breakfast was great as well.
We didn't realize how unusual this would be at the time, but part of what we particularly enjoyed about this place was the ability to book the onsen for an hour at a time per party, regardless of gender mix. We were traveling with a friend, and this was the only time in Japan that we weren't gender segregated in the baths (nor was there any posted prohibition on bathing with tattoos). It was fun and relaxing for the three of us to hang out for our hour in the onsen and be able to talk and just be ourselves.
The hosts were welcoming and provided amazing service throughout. The room was comfortable as well, and warm/cozy despite the cold outside. I'm happy to have chosen this place over the more well-known highly rated place nearby in Hakone.

Incredibly unfriendly people who don't understand how t works. When I went to eat in the restaurant I had my own special beer. I said write a bought beer on the bill. But I got thrown out of the restaurant! I can't believe it.
In addition, the beds are on the floor and that was an additional reason to leave the prepaid night and dinner and breakfast for what t was. A mistake and quickly another hotel bound nearby.

Loved this place! Our real first taste of traditional Japan and we loved it. This place is clean very comfortable and the breakfast was fantastic. Staff very nice, not a lot of English, but that was fine. I'd certainly recommend this place. The bus stop is about a 5-10 minute easy walk. The only thing we didn't get right was having a copy of the bus stops and timetable, try to get one before getting on the bus, if it wasn't for two lovely American girls, we would have been lost.

Large, quiet rooms, with the full ryokan experience. Good private hot spring baths (onsens - which you need to book a time for), and great food in the upstairs dining room. Breakfast and dinners were excellent, and wearing traditional yukata dress whilst in residence was an experience. It is about 20 minutes drive to the nearby lake / cable car to get a great view of Mt Fuji.

My son and I stayed 2 nights in this lovely ryokan and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It’s located about 15 minutes walk from the T bus stop. Our room was extremely clean and very comfortable with all the amenities we needed. The bathroom was small but perfectly fine for us. We were brought a welcome drink on arrival and the manager made a dinner reservation for us at a local restaurant and even organised free transport for us there and back to the ryokan. The private onsens are fabulous- book your preferred time slot early! The two breakfasts were amazing but don’t expect Western style food. We tried everything even though we weren’t sure what we were eating! The staff have little English but communication was easy using translation apps. The manager looked up our bus time to Odawara, as we needed to get there early to catch our train, and then drove us to the bus stop himself. We were most appreciative of his kindness. If you’re looking for a ryokan stay in the Hakone area I highly recommend Hakone Onsen Yuyado Yamanoshou.

large quiet rooms looking out to trees. Private hot spring baths (onsen) that you book each day but included in the room price. The most wonderful breakfasts. we stayed 4 days and had 4 different settings. Difficult to describe but imagine all the best bts of Japanese cuisine in small portions prepared at your table by pleasant and helpful staff.
close to the T bus stop (about 10 minute walk) and about 15 minute bus ride from lake Asahi. Restaurants and museums and art galleries nearby and accessible by foot and/or bus. THe hakone travel pass is a must for the area. we were there august and the temperature was pleasant.
highly recommended.
