I would definitely recommend staying at Hostel Zen. The room is very small but that is OK for one person. The included breakfast is very nutritious: 2 toasts, 1 egg, a chunk of banana and two drinks (coffee, tea, orange juice, milk, etc.) I paid ¥4 000/night but on the board outside and in the Lonely Planet, it said ¥3...

A bit of a weird place, as the hostel has taken over two floors of an apartment building. These apts are tiny and originally aimed at single laborers I think. In any case, the management has done a great job at upkeep and everything was really clean. Friendly staff with lots of English signage. They said about 2/3 are Japanese...

This is a clean and comfortable hostel that offers a free continental breakfast. The rooms are quite small, but this is normal for Japan. Our room had aircon and a TV which I was expecting. Just be aware that the reception is on the 5th floor and there is no lift - stairs only at this hostel. Close to Chinatown...

I arrived in Yokohama and asked the TIC at the train station for a cheap hostel to stay that night. The only hostels seemed to be in this area. What I didn't know was that this is the welfare area in Yokohama. There are a few homeless people on the street who heckled me a little, which is something that...

Stayed for 1 night and had two rooms for 4 people. The rooms were quite small but expected for the price. Had some difficulty in bringing our luggage to our rooms since it was located at the 4th floor and this Hostel did not have any elevator. Breakfast was included in the price which consisted of Toast, Jam, Coffee /...

The room cheap and basic but the beds were comfortable and the rooms are relatively quiet, so not so bad for a budget hotel. The very weird check-in procedure annoyed us. We booked through expedia a few days before. We arrived at 8.30pm and the reception should be open till 10pm (or at least 9pm) as far as we could...

Room was dark and dingy and had a terrible damp smell. Not pleasant to spend any time in the room. If you really want a cheap place and only intend to sleep here then maybe OK, otherwise spend a bit more and go elsewhere.

Pro: - Location: Only 2 minutes walk from the nearest station and on a non busy road. Cons: - Location: It was somewhat shady area, especially at night - Quality: The walls are thin, you can hear when people are being loud - Misinformation: You have to pay to shower and they do not have an elevator - things they...

Hostel Zen was a lovely hostel near the Chinatown area of Yokohama. If you don't mind trudging up 5 flights of stairs, you won't be disappointed. The rooms are ryokan style, with straw matting and a roll down mattress. There is a pretty roof garden to sit in and breakfast is served by delightful staff the next day. Really good...
