Luckily this was our first Ryokan experience and it got much better after this one. When we first arrived, we felt like we were an imposition. The furniture was torn and tattered, the whole place felt old and dingy. It was freezing in our bedroom and in the bathroom, which was across the hall. They showed some of us the... More

On a positive note, the location is great. You're right in the center of all the roaming deer and a stone's throw away from the Todaiji Temple. From the moment we arrived we didn't feel a warm reception. Unlike every other location that has helped us with our bags, we handled them ourselves. Normally I'm fine with taking my own... More

On any trip to Japan it's worth going to Kankaso or other similar high-end ryokan in the countryside. Staying at Kankaso feels like staying in an amazing, large, 100yr-old Japanese home. This place is totally Japan - as authentic feeling as it gets. Like many ryokans, this is run by only a few people - don't expect a front desk... More

We stayed at this ryokan as part of our honeymoon for 1 night in Nara. We booked it as it had such good reviews on trip advisor, but unfortunately it did not meet our expectations. It is in an amazing location, right in the deer park. You can walk to the giant Buddha whilst feeding and petting the deer which... More

We stayed here for two nights and had the most wonderful time. The room was spectacular, the food was spectacular and the garden was spectacular. The owners were incredibly attentive. To cap it off, the location in the Nara Deer Park right outside Todai-ji and the Diabutsu is amazing. Booked through the "Japanese Guesthouses" website, who were very helpful.

We were lucky enough to be assigned the Kojika Room. (“Kojika” is the Japanese word for “fawn.”) Entered via a covered wooden bridge, the Kojika Room is actually a freestanding building, surrounded by a splendid garden. The main room is ten tatami mats in size and during the day furnished only with a large, elegant low table and two seat... More

Rest here if you would like the greenery wide view directly from your room. The garden here is very big and delicately decoration with many variety of trees and flowers. Even the onsen room still has the big window for garden view. Moreover, the kind ryokan owner took care of me warmestly, adjust all schedules as requested perfectly (I read... More

Kankaso is a Ryokan situated in the main Park near the Todai Ji. You can't stay any closer. It is a bit far from the train station so you will need to take a taxi to get to the Ryokan. Because the Ryokan is old and famous all the taxi drivers will know where to go if you tell them... More

Located on the edge of Nara park, Kankaso epitomizes the "Japanese experience; fo ra fee of course. We arrived about 4:15 and were promptly herded into the dining room for some invigorating green eat and cookies while being checked-in. No english...one of the women was very brusque as previously mentioned and the other women was very sweet and attentive. Dinner... More

I debated on a 2 or 3 star rating for this place because staying at a ryoken's can be a nice experience if done well. There are good points about this place but we had such a poor experience that I must base my review on the treatment from the host that we received, more so than the better aspects... More
