We enjoy the food delivery during MCO on sets of Don with: braised beef short ribs, Wafu chicken teriyaki, Nanban fish and Mushroom Kingdom. Delicious rice with tasty sauce, salad and egg. Love the turmeric chicken wings and apple jack crumble too. Soon will order the pretty and yummy Afternoon Tea set. Great food, nice packaging and hygienic, fast delivery, COD or bank transfer for payment. It’s absolutely ease our life. Very recommended !

Went for breakfast with friends and had nice chit chat session. Had fruit crepe and long black, which is good and portion not huge. Comfortable setting and warm ambience with a feel of luxury. More food options for lunch though.

So we arrived and it looks beautiful, just like the pictures. The staff are friendly but English can be hit and miss. Check in was easy enough - no offer of any upgrade or room change (which given only 3 of the 8 rooms were occupied and 2 larger rooms remained available for the 4 night duration of stay seems odd. I'm a platinum guest so whilst I appreciate people may choose a specific room it is nice to offer). The corridors are tired with stained carpets and dodgy floorboards and within the room things like missing shower tiles, cracked paint, etc don't live up to the price bracket for the area. Room was as picture but quite dark with all shutters closed and the whole toilet light in the night thing with a remote curtain just disruptive to your partner. Also storage is virtually non-existent so useless for longer stays and wardrobe is open. Weirdly they only provided a spare toilet roll one night and even when I asked 2nd night as explained tummy a little dodgy didn't have 3rd and 4th nights and ran out - not what you expect. They had gone to town on the towel art and flower petals as it was my birthday but lack of understanding means they didn't tidy it away and we were left trying to do so at bedtime - and were still finding mouldy petals when we checked out. There is wine in the room at a charge and free soft drinks and it was a nice touch that they brought an ice bucket each evening. I have to comment on the stationery drawer which is the cutest I've ever seen! Breakfast is shocking for this level of hotel - 4 choices - I had the same thing for 4 days and not through choice! I had avocado on a muffin with a fried egg - it was OK. Hubby had salmon and eggs one day and it was a near dinner size portion with a lot of cooked tomato? The first day nothing additional available and then the remaining 3 days some cereal, yogurt, melon and bread randomly appeared. The waitress did also bring us some fruit as I think she was embarrassed. The pool is nice and secluded but only once in 4 days were we offered any service there and the toilets regularly had no toilet roll or soap (during the current coronovirus outbreak that seems even more remiss) and if someone had used the loungers there were no replacement towels. Also when people in the balcony room sat outside it somehow felt uncomfortable for both parties and they went in after 10 minutes. The restaurant Blanc was shocking and I have written a separate review - all I will say is don't. Location is fine - you can easily walk or get a Grab car for under 10MYR pretty much most places - even airport was only 21MYR and it's other end of the island. Staff did want to help and were friendly but they have limited training and poor ideas re service e.g. standing talking to you when you wait for your grab even though phone is ringing and you say please answer it. I saw no form of management during our stay and to round things off on the last day we left our bags after checkout and when we returned to leave for the airport I went to use the bathroom outside the bar and was rather rudely challenged by a member of staff. If they offer a bespoke service and I have been a guest for 4 days should they not recognise this?

I have been in the hotel business for many years, which means I understand how hard people work and I try wherever possible to overlook minor issues but I’m afraid Macalister Mansion has pushed me beyond my limits. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms are fantastic and the pool is lovely, but scratch below the surface and you find a very poorly run hotel. The staff are lovely but clearly lack training, they try hard but simply fail to deliver, the attention to detail is completely absent. The breakfast offering is possibly the worst of any hotel I have ever stayed in at this price, very limited and today most things weren’t even available, it seems inexplicable that you can run out of things when you only have 8 rooms. My partner is gluten intolerant and on the first day asked for gluten free bread, which was not available, fair enough, but they promised they would have it the next day, we are now on day 3, still no gluten free bread despite having also mentioned it to reception. The rooms are clean but the corridor carpets are badly stained, items used in the room are not replenished, they provide tea and coffee making facilities but no milk, ok I can ask for it but I shouldn’t have to. So a beautiful building, very modern and spacious rooms but if you want a decent breakfast and good service look elsewhere.

The first thing you notice about Macalister Mansion is the beautiful bright white colonial facade, set back from busy Jalan Macalister. The interior doesn't disappoint either, from the lush whisky bar (for a moment you can forget the heat and humidity and pretend you're in the Scottish Highlands), to the luxurious rooms, with the designer bathrooms being a particular highlight, complete with Aesop products. The decent-sized pool is situated between the hotel and the road, but secluded by plants. I went for a swim every day and we only ever saw one other person there - perhaps not surprising given there are only 8 rooms. There appears to be a pool bar but it didn't seem to be staffed whenever I was there. Breakfast is very good, though the options are fairly limited; ours was included in our room rate too. The "gym" comprises two cross-trainers, but still a good way to sweat out the previous evening's Tigers before breakfast. Blanc restaurant on site looks excellent and there is a fantastic deal for hotel residents. Sadly we only stayed 3 nights and didn't get the chance to dine there. Next time… Location-wise, MM is a little bit of a hike from the main attractions of George Town, but still walkable (we did) or you can just grab a Grab. Highly recommended New Lane street eats about a kilometre down the road - we have dinner there twice. Only real complaint was that our bar fridge (no booze supplied so BYO), was noisy and didn't do a very good job of cooling (and didn't have a dial to adjust). Would definitely stay here again.
