Beautiful new hotel in Cluj. Staff are very professional and uphold the high quality of Marriott Courtyard. The air conditioning in the room works great. Breakfast is mega! Great selection, everything fresh and great selection. The bar in the hotel is beautiful, the restaurant we did not test. The reception staff are helpful, very professional and always friendly. In a few minutes you can walk to the city center and discover great restaurants, and the nightlife.

This was our first visit to Cluj, and we had originally booked the Radisson Blu, but to my surprise when I was browsing Marriott Bonvoy’s app this hotel came up.

Newly opened only a few months. This country are is simply the best I have stayed in.

The Arrival

We drove from Bucharest and we were messaging through the Marriott App for car parking guidance, to our shock on arrival the car had to go in a lift! Very clever use of space and the car park was super clean and very convenient. Price at €20.00 a day, looking in the surrounding area at the not so secure car parks there’s only a couple of euros difference and the hotel feels safer.

Check in was smooth, team knowledgeable but the lobby just has a very modern, fresh feel. Bright and presents itself in a minimalist but luxurious form which is very surprising for the brands positioning, but so very welcome.

The Room

Technologically led, modern, very clean. One of the comfiest beds and pillows I’ve had a while, and they took note of my preferences which was great to see. Daily housekeeping kept the room in check and i really liked the music in the bathroom and the hotel corridors. Bathrobes, slippers and water were all present in our Superior King Room. With this room type we were on the first floor and it didn’t come with any view but that didn’t bother us as we had a big window that could open and with it being city centre views weren’t on the priority list for us.

The Breakfast

What a spread on offer and beautifully set up and with the friendliest of team members. Most courtyards would just have the buffet but my partner asked for something off menu and they made it no problem, and subsequently for the following three mornings they made it without issue, a slight nod on arrival to confirm that’s what he was after and they made it. This was a true example of anticipatory Serivce and personalisation.

This hotel for me is a stand out for a city like Cluj, it’s in such a good location right in the old town and offers such a good experience for those in Cluj.

10 out of 10! Well done to the Courtyard Cluj Team! I’m sure you will grow even stronger as the hotel matures.

I've stayed well over 1,000 nights in Marriott hotels over the last 20 years & my stay at the Cluj Courtyard was by far the worst experience I have had!

We arrived in the hotel pretty late at around 7pm, had a shower & went straight out for dinner, I set the air con to 18deg's before we left as the room was very hot when we arrived. To note there were no instructions on the air con, it was a case of 'trial & error' with the control panel

We arrived back at the room at around 10.30pm & the room temperature was showing 25.5deg's 🥵 so I rang to reception to ask what was wrong. I was told that a few adjustments had been made and the room temperature should start to drop so we went to bed. After a couple of hours at around midnight we had to get out of bed as the temperature was just too hot to sleep, it was still showing 25deg's! I was told that the air conditioning must be faulty and there was little that could be done. No fans were available. We did eventually get offered a room across the corridor which he told me would be cooler temperature so I said we would take it just to sleep in. When entering the room across the corridor it was 24deg's but had again been set to 18deg's but we were assured the temperature would drop quickly. We had a cold shower & got into bed although the new room was still very hot. We had a miserable nights sleep with the room being still 23deg's when we left in the morning (it had ran all night set at 18deg's) We had to go back to our original room to pack which was still at 25deg's. The outside temperature that night was 19deg's so both rooms, with the air con on full, were still considerably warmer than the outside temperature!

We only really used the hotel to shower & sleep but our experience was terrible & the actual hotel I believe is as good as brand new having only opened a few months ago. The most disappointing thing however is that I have had no communication from the hotel at all since we left. Yes sometimes things go wrong, very, very occasionally things go wrong twice but when as a hotel you know your customers have had an absolutely miserable nights sleep with a combination of multiple phone calls, moving rooms in the middle of the night & little if any actual sleep and you don't even have the decency to apologise makes a terrible stay absolutely shocking! As above, I have spent over 1,000 nights of my life in Marriot hotels and this stay was by far the worst from the one thing that as a hotel you have to get right ie affording your clients a great nights sleep!

Dear Mr. Jackson, On behalf of the entire team and me personally, I would like to sincerely apologize for your unpleasant experience that you had at our property. Being a fresh new hotel on the market, we daily encounter things that we need to improve, and these are not always going as we plan, but we are dedicated to continuously improve our services and to satisfy our customer’s needs. You checked out very early in the morning and unfortunately none one from the management personnel was available at that hour to discuss and understand your problem. As per the Marriott standards we have the instructions for the AC on the TV at the column Hotel Services. We strive to provide the best possible experience for all our clients, and we regret that we fell short in your case. Your satisfaction is our priority, and we really hope to have the opportunity to provide a better experience for you in the future. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience you may have experienced also that we didn’t follow up earlier to you. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. Sincerely, Maria Spatari, Front Office Manager

I’ve stayed at the hotel 3 times during one month, I only have good things to say, super excited Marriott has opened in Cluj. I’ve stayed at both Hilton hotels and quality and service not as good as the Marriott. Food was awesome, we ate at the Italian restaurant in the lobby as well as breakfast on the lower level. Staff were very nice and professional, rooms and hotel interiors were impeccable

The hotel opened in 02/2024 so by the time of my visit (early 06) even some local taxi drivers are not familiar with the name, but all know about “the new one on [street] Avram Iancu”.

There are four floors of rooms above the ground level, and two floors underground (the buffet restaurant and the meeting/conference area). The parking is also underground, not used it – I read about using a (car!) lift/elevator to access.

Location: quite central, great for walks to the main central city attractions.

Room: the premium room is (European) large, and well appointed – there even are two drawers and a large area for coat hangers (compared with the minimalist Moxy-like layout). Extremely comfortable mattress, great selection of TV channels, fridge and coffee machine in the room. The premium room also has a separate area (no door) with a chair + ottoman, and a sofa bed. No TV here though, you could “use” the sound from the main room.

All room controls are managed by dashboard (see first photo), one in the entrance hall and another identical one near the bed. The bathroom is very good, and you can get music in there too (see second photo, it’s a dedicated music channel, not carrying the TV sound – when started – to the bathroom).

The breakfast buffet is the best I had in a very long time (Covid years counted). Many international types of food, my (biased) favourite being the local ‘jumări’ (bacon chips) - the best ever.

The Piatto restaurant is very different from North America Courtyard hotels: it’s open all day long (last kitchen order at 10:30 PM), with an extended wine list, and an equally extended menu. Excellent food, great service, a lot of natural light.

All staff I’ve been in contact were very professional. Marriott Romania does a great job selecting and training their staff (same level at two different hotels in my recent trip, for native Romanians the Cluj local – Transylvanian – vibe is an added bonus).

Highly recommended, happy travels!
