This was our first accommodation experience of Japan, deliberately chosen to allow us to see what a ryokan is like, whilst still being near the centre of a large, buzzy city. It was a delightful experience and we happily stayed in many more over a two-month driving tour of Japan, of all sizes and prices. Arriving in our rental car...

Only the friendliness and helpful staff save this from a one blob rating. My wife commented that it is a bit downmarket, she is quite correct. Its just all rather poor, cheap band b style reception, very pokey and tired bathroom, and the room is small, a little weary and frankly just a bit cheap. Communal bath is surprisingly good,...

This ryokan is delightful. The staff are very friendly, welcoming and eager to please. The ryokan itself mixes Japanese tradition with modern comfort. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the ryokan itself is located within easy walking distance of Sapporo railway station.

It was a very good decision to stay in this ryokan as the room was spacious and clean, the food was excellent, the staff were very friendly, helpful and able to speak English. It was winter but sleeping on futton mattress and tatami mat was comfortable, even for my 8 years old girl. Their clean and relaxing public bath (onsen)...

Breakfast was a high point of our stay there. It is served on the main floor in the dining area. Upon entering, a tray of attractive Japanese plates and bowls of foods like fish, pickles, salad, etc., are brought to you. In addition, help yourself to miso soup, rice, juices, coffee, tea, fresh fruit and raw vegetables, breads, and a...

As expected, the room is small. We stay in a room with two kids. After the tatami is set up, there is not any room to walk. Walking distance to Sapporo main station about 10 - 15 minutes. Everything else is good, and the receptionist, though speak limited English is very helpful. A good place to stay.

Stayed for 2 nights in a room for 4. The place was clean, nice and had a homely feel. Our room was on the second floor but there is a lift. The room had a toilet with bathing facilities, although it is Japanese style. However the onsen is also located at level 2 and allows for more "spacious" bathing. The...

Excellent Ryokan room, very well maintained. They gave me a welcome tea and small treat. Slept on the comfortable tatami, very well rested. Relatively close to the train station. Some Idiot smoked in the lobby. They don't take my American Express, had to pay cash. Overall a great stay

It's a traditional ryokan with stellar service and English speaking staff. The rooms are clean and quiet and the location is great (pretty much in the middle between the JR station and Susukino nightlife area). They were extremely helpful with making a reservation by phone at our next travel destination. Price without dinner and breakfast is fair (around Y 5.500).

On our last two nights in Hokkaido, we stayed in Sapporo and opted for Nakamuraya Ryokan over a Western-style hotel room. It was really enjoyable to stay in a traditional style Japanese inn, and the staff, especially the younger guys who were around our first day, were really helpful and nice. Upon check in, they made green tea for us...

“If you are particular about 2nd-hand cigarette smoke (and the smoke really lingers), ask for a room as far away from the designated smoking room eg room number 201/301, 202/302, 203/303, etc. depending on which floor (the first number rep the floor). The smaller the number, the further away from the smoking room.”

“Try and get a south-facing room. It's great to see the sun light streaming into your room. The pillow is a typical bean-filled Japanese pillow. When you get used to this, it is actually works better than a western soft pillow, but you may want to bring your own (such as a Tempur travel pillow). This is obviously a personal thing. The slippers are also small for most western people, so you may want to BYO.”
