If you are looking for a Ryokan experience, then this is the place to go. However I am not sure why it is categorised as a luxurious ryokan as it is largely basic but cosy. We stayed 2 nights with a 22 months old in tow, and that's more than enough for experience. The public onsen (hot spring bath) is...

I stayed at this Ryokan with my husband last June and I loved it and would definitely recommend. The ryokan is impeccable, beautiful and really comfortable. There were gorgeous trees outside our window. We had traditional breakfast in our room and it was exquisite. The Ryokan has a great location in Gion district

So, if you're a devout western traveler like my gf and I, you will undoubtedly be disappointed by this experience to the point of feeling financially violated. I'm simply not into spartan living, rolling around on a tatami mat in pajamas and sleeping on a futon. All for $700/night. Ugh. Food is beautiful and delicious. Staff is lovely. That said,...

We arrived at 3:45 pm and were asked to sign a list of house rules at check-in. We were escorted to our room by a lovely lady dressed in kimono. The room was at the end of the property with a view of the parking lot. Our beds were already made (I guess because we didn't sign up for the...

Having read the guidebooks we felt a stay in a traditional Ryokan would be a highlight of our trip to Japan. I am glad to have tried it but I wouldn't do it again. Positives: Gion location was amazing, tatami/futon traditional setting, clothing provided and public bath were very nice. The food was a spectacular presentation. Negatives: it was too...

We had a relaxing stay at Gion Hatanaka. The room was spacious and minimalist. We had a lovely leafy outlook. Every meal was a generous feast. The service was friendly and professional. A beautiful ryokan in a beautiful spot. Highly recommend.

We spent one night there and it was worth the money. The staff were delightful and helpful. The kaiseki multi-course dinner served in the spacious room was superb. The location in Gion is perfect for seeing this historic part of Kyoto. It was the highlight of our trip to Japan.

We recently attended a Geiko/Maiko evening with Kaiseki dinner at this Ryokan. I have nothing but amazing things to say about the staff who work here. They are polite, well mannered, efficient, unobtrusive, and genuinely lovely: a stark contrast from the horrendous hotel we've been staying in in Tokyo. The Geisha evening was simply out of this world - something...

The building , facilities, staff and location are all excellent. The room was spacious and very well equipped. The room assistant did a great job of explaining how things worked and the various dishes that made up breakfast. The room has a traditional tub but the communal bath in the basement (male and female separate) was a real treat. Attended...
