If you are looking for a special visit to the Gion district of Kyoto, best known for its many geishas and spectacular shrines, consider this lovely ryokan, or Japanese inn. A dedicated hostess makes your bed daily as well as serves you breakfast in your room and looks after your needs. Complete with beautiful tatami flooring, comfortable futon sleeping arrangements,...

We had a relaxing stay at Gion Hatanaka. The room was spacious and minimalist. We had a lovely leafy outlook. Every meal was a generous feast. The service was friendly and professional. A beautiful ryokan in a beautiful spot. Highly recommend.

We spent one night there and it was worth the money. The staff were delightful and helpful. The kaiseki multi-course dinner served in the spacious room was superb. The location in Gion is perfect for seeing this historic part of Kyoto. It was the highlight of our trip to Japan.

We recently attended a Geiko/Maiko evening with Kaiseki dinner at this Ryokan. I have nothing but amazing things to say about the staff who work here. They are polite, well mannered, efficient, unobtrusive, and genuinely lovely: a stark contrast from the horrendous hotel we've been staying in in Tokyo. The Geisha evening was simply out of this world - something...

The building , facilities, staff and location are all excellent. The room was spacious and very well equipped. The room assistant did a great job of explaining how things worked and the various dishes that made up breakfast. The room has a traditional tub but the communal bath in the basement (male and female separate) was a real treat. Attended...

So happy we chose Gion Hatanaka. Wonderful location near the Yasaka Shrine which is lit up at night and makes for a wonderful walk with its beautiful lanterns gently swaying in the wind. The ryokan itself was very clean, our attendant very sweet and anxious to please, and our room faces the park. Breakfast was amazing and the futons much...

First of all, Gion Hatanka is a very hard place to photograph. That's why every shot seems to be of the steps!! Inside it is surprisingly spacious. You step off the street from right outside the Yasaka Shrine into the wonderful world of Gion Hatanaka. The kids (and we) were squealling with excitement at the understated loveliness of it all....

My family and I stayed at Gion Hatanaka in June. We stayed in the ryokan and attended the Geisha show. We have traveled a lot, and in any country $1000 per night is a LOT of money. Was it worth it? If you are going to stay in a ryokan, this is the going rate and this is a very...

Beautiful building with ENORMOUS rooms and spot on service. A touch dated but I have no frame of reference as this was our first stay in a ryokan. The dinner was unreal as was the breakfast. Easily as good as any Michelin star restaurant in Tokyo. That alone was worth the price. Slept like a baby on our tatami futon...

I have been in love with geishas for a long time. Here you will experience a multiple course meal (exciting and new dishes) while watching geisha and her apprentices perform. They are absolutely stunning. They will come to your table to talk to you and take pictures. And of course there are drinking games! Unlimited sake. It's a blast. I...
