We stayed only one night but the quiet and calm atmosphere and the ground level room with a view to the garden was very nice, clean, and the brds were comfortable. A nice sitting area with a table right by the large window provided a welcome respite from the busy streets

Average hotel in a beautiful area. Room was fine, typical Japanese hotel, bed was very comfy. Loved the mattress. My number one pet peeve at hotels is a lack of good functioning wifi. This hotel has no dedicated wifi, however the city of Kyoto does, as does Arashiyama, and they are free and work well. So what's the problem? You...

A friend and I backpacked through Japan this past spring and used this hotel as a relaxing get away from the super busy cities in Japan. It is about a 10 minute walk from the Bamboo Forest and is easy to walk to from Arashiyama Station. There are good places to eat nearby and the staff was very friendly and...

Its a gem right at Arashiyama, at night you get to see the beautiful lights from the bridge and at day is so close by the main places you need to visit/eat at Arashiyama. Rooms are not so spacious and facilities are not of a high rate hotel, think of it as a modern higher class inn/ryokans, must try the...

A bit remote from Kyoto center, yet located in the Arashiyama neighborhood, which is a must see area, for its temples, parks etc. The hotel has decent rooms, hot baths, serves good Japanese breakfast and last but not least for fit tourists: provides free bikes. All in all it is a bit dusty but still recommended.

We stayed here at the end of June and only booked here as on booking.com all places seemed to be quite full. Paid 21'000 Yen/night (200 usd/night) and got a little room with not even a queen size bed, wi-fi only in the lobby and breakfast served at scheduled time like in the military... Nice garden and public bath though....

My wife and I booked this hotel outside Kyoto for its close situation to natural surroundings and the onsen. The hotel is indeed well situated. The room was very basic and poor, no coffee machine available. The reception was strictly japanese, basically giving the feeling that we as foreigners are invading this japanese hate, thus not welcome. We looked to...

The hotel is situated in a very quiet side street away from the Arashiyama crowd. It's right next to Hogonin which is a must see in goyo season. The hotel is quite dated as expected when I made the reservation seeing the pictures, so it's not a surprise. I just wish they could retire those dated bed cover because they...

Best thing about the Ranzan Hotel is location It is a quiet (not a Ryakan) hotel on the Katsura River with an attractive small shady moss garden. Our room was basic, beds were clean, carpets were worn out and dusty. There are no Thermal Baths (or Onsen) in this hotel. Just Japanese style hot baths area in the underground level.

Tucked right at the end of the street, this is one Ryokan that I was eagerly wanting to stay after all the rave reviews. The Ryokan is quite a walk (about 15 – 20min) from the train station and if you are travelling in groups, I would suggest that you share a cab. Though it takes about 5 – 10min...

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
