This is not a great hotel and it's not meant to be - it is decent for it's price. The rooms smell of smoke but they are clean. We didn't notice the notice of a night curfew between 2 to 6 PM and we had to leave earlier. The person in the front desk agreed to wake up at five o'clock in the morning in order to open the door for us. More

I booked the Sunset Inn for my friend and I with the help of a Japanese friend who thought this place looked nice. The website indicated that they catered for tourists so we were expecting staff with some English and perhaps some friendliness...The staff were rude and only one spoke a few words of English. I in no way expect everyone in a foreign country to speak English, but if you are a hotel who does not cater for English speakers, don't advertise that you do! I was organizing a meet-up with a Japanese friend and they needed to call the hotel room phone, which would not ring and the staff refused to believe that it did not ring. The bathroom was hideously small, even for Japanese standards and the room was old and dingy. Everyday we would come home to find that the cleaners had moved our belongings and tidied some of them, which I find really unprofessional, I don't want my belongings moved around and organized. The 'breakfast' consists of a glass of orange juice and some small... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
