What a nice experience from start to end. Yes it is not a typical Relais but really nothing to care about. It is a small and beautiful Ryokan more in the new center of Kyoto. Access to all major attractions is easy and within 15-20 minutes. The KN is a family-run business and you are welcomed as a family member....

I just returned from Japan and while there we spent 1 night at the Kanamean Nishitomiya in Kyoto. I thought this was a charming Inn and the owners and staff were so gracious and warm. The dinner was outstanding, the food was amazing, the presentation was beautiful and the service impeccible. The location was great as we could walk to...

Beautiful experience with absolutely fantastic, generous people. I have travelled the world and Asia in particular and would recommend this ryokan for a memorable experience. At the beginning it is a hidden place close to the busy commercial area. Once you get in, it is an oasis of minimalist retreat which it is not easy to forget. Soon I will...

This ryokan represents true Japanese hospitality. Mr Nishida n his wife makes you feel so comfortable. Clearly worth the Michelin stars n Relai n chateaux brand that has been awarded. The location is very good, near the nikishi market, although it may be a bit hard to navigate without google map. The futon beds are so comfortable n the room...

On arrival we were shown to a very basic room, the quality of workmanship, design and choice of materials was extremely low, how this hotel became members of the so called prestigious 'Relais Chateau' brand is a complete mystery? and frankly seriously downgrades all other members... the service/rooms/facilities is less than any acceptable basic standard. The room opposite the room...

Why stay in a western style hotel when you can enjoy the experience of a ryokan? We will never regret that we chose this place as our retreat during our stay in Kyoto. Nishida-san and his wife were two very lovely people, and we enjoyed Nishida-san stories for his passion for architecture and food. Service and accommodation exceeded our expectations,...

This was my 3rd time at Kanamean within 2.5 years and coming back is always like a dream come true. Wonderful design, excellent service and and incredibly good Kaiseki dinner paired with amazing Sake right in the heart of Kyoto. I have stayed in 4 different rooms over the years and my favourites are Yokobue (beautiful garden view and huge...

The most relaxing peaceful Ryokan we have ever visited. True perfection, from the rooms the food to the personnel, it was excellence at it's best. We highly recommend having dinner there. We had one fabulous dinner and Sake tasting that we will never forget.

This unassuming little ryokan is registered with Relais & Châteaux, the booking site for more discerning clientele. It's not very big-- only 6 rooms in total which makes it quite exclusive. The rooms are spavious by any standard. We stayed at the Umegae which was the second biggest and it had a foyer with wardrobe, sitting nook, sleeping area for...

Nice, clean and good location in Downtown Kyoto. Quite and nice team, but not at the standard you could expect from a Relais&Chateau. Overpriced. We did not try any service, as they were never explained or presented.

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.

“If you find the rooms too expensive, you can always try to haggle a good rate and deal with the owners if you plan on trying their kaiseki or breakfast anyway. The Aoi suite was nice but not amazing considering price and value ratio.”
