Everything while staying at Ohanabo was wonderful. The appearance outside and inside, how everything was in place so that you can find them easily, and how everyone made you feel welcome and comfortable was all great. I was traveling with a large bicycle and they went extra steps to take care of it. The food and sake were delicious too....

Only a 10 minute walk from Kyoto station. Really great Ryoken with very friendly staff who provided an excellent service. Room was really big and bedding was all set out for us on arrival (we arrived late). Traditional Japanese breakfast was impressive and very delicious. Curfew wasn’t an issue either as long as you keep the noise down when returning...

this is a traditional Kyoto experience, infused with the personality of the lovely ladies that staff Ohanabo. They are the cutest. Our kaiseki dinner and kaiseki breakfast at Ohanabo were some of my favorite meals in Japan. It was so unique and beautifully done. The rooms aren't fancy like what you would find at a luxury hotel, but you don't...

It is a small hotel, with a traditional Japanese setting. The owner and the staffs are fantastic. Great breakfast and dinner. They try their best to make you feel welcome, comfortable and fully relax. It is just a short walk from the Kyoto train and buses terminal, Therefore, it makes it easy for us to go out to explore the...

If you're looking to experience Japan in a traditional sense, this is the ryokan you want to experience it in. Be prepared for smaller rooms, sleeping on the tatami, small restrooms... but the hosts and the experience as a whole is worth every bit!! Pros: accommodating hosts, wonderful food, FANTASTIC LOCATION, tremendous value, amenities Cons: you don't realize how much...

What an amazingand authentic experience. The place was beautiful with such attention to detail. The staff really added to the experience with their impeccable service and friendly nature. Very close to Kyoto station and central to most tourist activities. We absolutely loved staying here.

This is the 3rd time I visited Kyoto and this is the best ryokan experience i have ever had. Location: Just within walking distance from Kyoto station. You can reach the hotel from the Kyoto subway station north-most exit, after exiting the underground tunnel it is just a block away. A Lawson and Familymart store round the corner so if...

Ok location- 8 minute straight line walk to Kyoto station. Couldn't be easier. Rooms- Though a traditional Ryokan- it's not as old and worn as the others I have come across. Everything looked new and fresh. The traditional Japanese futon bedding was the most comfortable we have come across- and yes the pillows feel like their filled with marbles BUT...

This is the only ryokan we booked for our whole trip in Japan to let my wife experience Japanese traditional hospitality at the traditional city of Kyoto to compare with the other luxury modern hotels. With one of the highest rating on Tripadvisor, we decided to give Ohanabo a try for a two night stay during the super peak season...

Very little to add to previous reviews, except that there is indeed a very small pleasant onsen. We had two rooms in the back, and loved our stay. The hostess was really fantastic. One night she even walked us all the way to our restaurant (which she booked for us) above the railway station.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
