We spent 3 nights in Kyoto and wanted to spend one night in a ryokan. Hirashin was clean, comfortable, and provided us the experience of in-room tea table, sleeping on a mat, and bath house. We also chose the breakfast option, which was a traditional Japanese breakfast, so be prepared for miso soup, rice, and fish and veggie dishes. I...

Location: 8/10 Cleanliness: 8/10 Service: 6/10 Wi-Fi: 2/10 Comfort: 8/10 Good location, within walking distance of several subway lines. Lots of food options nearby. Service was friendly but can be a bit slow at times. Check in was at 4pm (and not a moment earlier). Wi-Fi was free but quite useless with constant drop outs and slow performance. The room...

This was far from what we expected which was a more relaxing experience. The check in staff was unfriendly, the reception was run down and smoke filled. The whole hotel is run down, looks more like a camp site, very tacky and feels unclean. The corridors dingy and dark. The rooms themselves were huge by Japanese standards but again, even...

Wanted to try a ryokan, this wasn't really the traditional building we had expected. All the staff were very friendly and the location is ideal to explore the Nishiki market and surrounding area. The rooms are traditional but housed in a modern shell plus there are Onsen in the basement. Our room had a bit of wear / damage, the...

We wanted to have a more authentic experience while in Japan and were told we needed to stay at a Ryokan. We found this place online and it was great. The room was what I had expected, but the meal was an amazing experience where they brought the food into our room. There was sushi, miso, tempura and a number...

overall this place was ok - we had a nice room that was really warm and futons weren't as comfy as others we had stayed in . we booked the sukiyaki dinner for the night and weren't that impressed with it , was a quick throw together and poor quality beef just not as we have had in small shops...

It is not a real Ryokan, modern version…But that said, with the exception of messy check in, service was old school meaning very good… There was a mix up during check in early morning: i had cancelled my first booking and replaced with a new one (with different dates), but they somehow assumed totally cancelled. Once we got that sorted,...

The room was exceptionally disappointing: a Motel 6 version of what a ryokan should be like. Absolutely the cheapest appointments and furniture. Only plus: very helpful and friendly staff--- wonderful gentlemen.

We were not sure what to expect staying in a ryokan but this ryokan is a great mix of modern hotel and traditional ryokan. The lobby area is very modern and the rooms very traditional. The rooms are very spacious and have everything you need including a flat screen tv. Sleeping on the floor takes a little getting used to...

The location of this ryokan is perfect as it is closed to lots of attraction in Kyoto. The room is huge and clean. The only disadvantage is the price. Not sure if it's worth the price we paid. For 1-2 nights, it's ok.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
