It began with a picture on a postcard, then a story from a friend, but it took a while before I learned of the kawadoko dining experience. In Kibune, a small town in the mountains half an hour north of Kyoto, many famous restaurants take their dining outside. In the hot summer months platforms are constructed directly on top of...

We went for the somen. As other reviewers point out it was a long wait. While it's fun catching noodles through the bamboo tubes, the noodles and the dipping sauce are bland. You are really there for the novelty of it all. In hindsight we would have enjoyed more a leisurely paced meal over the river. It would have been...

If you want a romantic meal - don't go there. If you want a chat during your meal - don't go there. However, if you want a hilarious, exciting, fun and a very very Japanese food adventure do not miss it. The location of the restaurant is simply stunning. Who said you need a solid foundation for building a restaurant??...

I had heard vaguely of the "river noodle" dining experience in Kibune, so we thought we would track it down. Boy am I glad we did. After taking the rinky dink train to Kibune station, we hopped on the local bus that deposited us in Kibune. About a 5-10 min walk up the hill, past all of the rather pricey...

Kawadoko -- dining on tatami mats hovering inches over the rive in Hifune -- was a wonderful experience. The setting is incredible. There are very few foreign tourists (a bit complicated to get there from downtown Kyoto). The Kaiseki dinner was superb, and some in our family had sukiyaki, which was also superb. If you are in Kyoto, I highly...

First I'll start with the food, to treat ourselves we went with one of the more expensive options of the summer kaiseki at 8600 yen. The food was top notch with amazing and weird food being brought in about 10 different stages, some I wouldn't have normally chosen but it was still a great experience. It kept us both full...

We decided to do the hike from Kurama station to Kibune station, with our reward being a beautiful kaseiki lunch at Hirobun, dining with their platforms suspended over the cooling waters of Kibune. Definitly worth a short day trip out of Kyoto, the relatively easy hike took about an hour an a half. We booked ahead with our hotel and...
