The rooms and all amenities are very new and clean. Very friendly staff welcomes you and is keen to help with tips about what to do in Kyoto. As to be expected, the rooms are quite small, but comfortable. All amenities are shared. The guesthouse is located in a quiet side street. A bus stop is close by and the...

I am still completing my journey thru Japan as I write this review. Overall I enjoyed my stay in Guesthouse Yahata. I stayed in a mix dormitory room. Surprisingly this means a small individual room in the attic (tall enough so I can sit in the room but not enough for standing). Very tiny but it comes with 4 power...

The hostel has a good location and we enjoyed our stay. We were able to keep our bikes outside the hostel and they were safe throughout our stay. The hostel also took my friends parcel which he sent from Nikko which was a massive help! We did however feel there were a lot of rules going on throughout, like only...

Hostess speaks English, which was nice. She was kind, informative and all the other staffs are willing to help you for whatever reason. The price was satisfying and the futon(asain style beddings) were so comfy and clean. However, the building is very old so there're some drawbacks you need to consider. (1) The stairs are very steep and you may...

Would not recommend it, somewhat pricy, only one bathroom (for males) and only one shower. Which you only are allowed to use until 23:00. Even if you queue and the person before you finishes one minute after 11pm they make no exceptions and you kindly have to go to bed sweaty, wait and have a shower after 8am the next...

This tiny guesthouse is quite central located about 20 minutes walk from the train station or 5 minutes from the subway (Gojo station). The hostel is clean; there is a tiny kitchen with free tea/coffee. A tiny breakfast included (one toast with butter/jam spread). There is available PC for a free use and free WI-FI but you have to register...

This was the only place we stayed during our two weeks in Japan that we regret. I'm not sure if anybody actually works there full time. Nobody was there when we went to check in and when we went downstairs to check out during checkout hours, nobody was there. The emergency contact cell phone was gone and they had a...

The place is clean and fairly central. But the overall impression is still poor because the owners are stingy and so high-strung it is almost laughable. They want 500 yan extra for an blanket. Other irritating things is that you have to put on the linen yourself on the bed, even though they charge like a proper hotel for the...

The staffs are very helpful and informative, we booked the room 3 days before arrival and were told that there was only loft room available. The price was really low so we took the offer. We were charged with 2 pax rate even though we had the 4-beds loft room all to ourselves. However, the guesthouse is quite small and...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
