This is the second stay at this hotel since we loved it so much the first time. We were not disappointed again. The location is the best as is the staff and overall facility. We did not go to the onsen nor did we have breakfast at the hotel. There are good choices close to the hotel for breakfast and for all your meals. Our room was a good size. If possible get a room with a view of the Kamogawa River. Definitely make sure that you get a room with a window. Luckily another room was available for my sister who coud not stay in the assigned windowless room. I did appreciate that the toilet was a separate room from the sink and shower/tub room however they are closed off from the room by sliding doors which did not block out the sound very well. The staff were helpful and friendly.

Stayed at this hotel as a first timer to Kyoto and can’t recommend this hotel more. The riverside location of the hotel is ideal. It’s close to many of the tourist sites of Kyoto and also super handy for transport, yet it is quiet. We had a basement garden view room. While it was slightly darker it had a lot of Japanese atmosphere. The bathroom was large and very clean, with a view of the outdoor garden. The bed was comfortable that we had no issue sleeping despite the time difference after long journey. Breakfast was served in the main restaurant. A good choices of Japanese/Western options were available plus a live egg cooking station. There is a male/female onsen on the basement, few washing machines (one for male and two for female, which I found odd). Service was very consistent and friendly. Would come back to this nice hotel again.

We had a great stay at the Solaria. Breakfast was included for our stay and it was really good. Eggs cooked to order and a good range of Japanese and Western options. Hotel is in a great location on the river and there is easy access to the Sanjo train station and the Tozai subway line. Many restaurants along Pontocho and adjoining streets. Easy walk to main shopping area and Gion too. Rooms (2) were both large and very clean. Rooms are serviced every second day but towels and bottled water etc are replenished daily. The hotel has a private bath area but we did not use it. The washer/dryers were very handy too. Highly recommend!

The room could have been bigger. We got ripped off by Expedia because they did not show that all rooms were non- smoking so I paid $230 more to get a no smoking room that I didn’t have to. They won’t acknowledge it even with proof. This aside, the staff goes above and beyond. I got very sick and needed a doctor. They made an appointment for me, called a cab, wrote out the information for me to show the driver. When we got there an hour early, I showed the lady the paper and they took me in immediately. The next morning, they called a cab and our next hotel telling them I was sick and coming early. We got a very early check in. Not everyone spoke perfect English, but these folks were exceptional. As far as Expedia goes

Good - excellent check-in. Very helpful with luggage / baggage transfer. Spacious room (especially compared with Tokyo). Very close to the subway line. Could be better - as it seems with every hotel in Japan, they seem to love uncomfortable pillows. I don’t get it, but it must be the thing! If you prefer not resting your head on a bag of solid pick n mix, bring your own pillow!

I chose to stay in the Twin Room with View Bath, because I knew I wouldn't be able to access the public bath (which look amazing in the pics), and so happy I went with this. The bath with the garden wall was my favourite part of the room (which was really good in evert other way too), and the provided mineral bath salt meant a soak every night. Breakfast was sometimes busy, but still no long waits for omelettes or filling the buffet. I took some video meetings in the room, and the internet was fine for that, although my room had no desk the sofa with the table worked fine. For my first visit in Kyoto, I had no problems moving around with the metro or bus, or just walking since you are in the city centre (Pontocho was great for dinner with a river-walk after).

The location is excellent. Breakfast is good. But… if you get a room on the wrong side then there is zero natural light. Our room had one window but it was not possible to open and it was frosted to the extent you could not see outside and almost no light could get in. Good for privacy but a real issue if you have any claustrophobia at all.

Beautiful is not a term I would normally use when reviewing hotels. However it is an appropriate term for this hotel. It is of course spotlessly clean like all Japanese hotels of quality. By Japanese standards our room was spacious and well appointed. What struck me was the interior decoration. Beautiful woodland glade in reception, beautiful colour scheme throughout and very friendly polite staff. It is a smaller hotel of high quality in a superb location only a matter of meters from Potoncho and Gion. So convenient and easy to access the best that beautiful Kyoto has to offer. We stayed for a week and had a grand time. This hotel also has an Onsen (Japanese bath house) in the basement. Great value for money, quiet, comfortable, great staff and the perfect location this hotel ticks all the boxes.

First time to Solaria and Kyoto. Room is BIG by Japan standard & VERY clean. Location- Ambience 5; convenience 4( why? Cos a walk to GION & Takashimaya where all activities hype are. Otherwise, convenient enuf Staff: some can't speak much Eng but svc is better than those who does at some countries & downtown Tokyo. Special mention to M Yamano who can't speak mych Eng yet efficiently & patiently facilitated our luggage to be delivered to Tokyo. Thank You so much Mr Yamano! As well the professional female staffs. Thoroughly needed the onsen soak every nite to relieve my tired feet. Guests were discreet except some noisy ones who failed to read the 'dos & don'ts' Looking back though, I would choose a hote nearer to Gion cos after sightseeing, more restaurants there to eat & head back to rest. You need 7 days in Kyoto to really take in the richness of this heaven-like city. Miss it already! Ps: how to get there:KIX to Kyoto Station- exit Okura hotel at nearby station as advised by another reviewer so you don't have to lugg your heavy luggage up the stairs!

My wife and I LOVED Solaria. First and foremost, because of the exceptional service we received there. In Japan, you will get good service but even in Japan, Solaria is exceptional. We were particularly impressed with Kaoru Sakiyama at the reception who went out of her way to take care of us. The hotel is really beautiful and esthetically pleasing. The rooms are nice and comfortable. The onsen is divine. Public transport is very close by.
