To spend two nights in this traditional Japanese house with more than 100 years of history is a must when in Kyoto. Wake up inside Maruyama park and walk down to Yasaka shrine everyday before heading on to the streets of Gion. Convenient location though becomes an exercise when going home since walk is uphill. Haraguchisan and wife are very... More

It's my best decision to choose Haraguchi San's house. It is located in the very very quiet Maruyama park while near to the famous Gion area. The whole house is a trational Japanese Machiya with more than 100 years, which allows you to experience the real Japanese lifestyle when staying in it. It was just me and my husband who... More

My husband, daughter and I stated for 3 nights at Salon Haraguchi Tensien in Kyoto. This is a wonderful place. Its nestled in the woods just behind Yasaka shrine in the Gion district. It's within walking distance to numerous historic sites, restaurants and shops, but it still in a natural, peaceful environment. The home itself was very clean and the... More

Staying at Salon Haraguchi Tenseian was one of the highlights of my 2-week trip to Japan. The house is old, beautiful, and full of character. It's decorated with attractive pottery handmade by Haraguchi san. (He is an artist with work in the British Museum's collection.) The paper-covered doors, gorgeous wooden staircase, and huge windows with traditional screens make the home... More

This was the highlight of our stay in Japan: a magical traditional house surrounded by beautiful nature at the heart of the city. Not only is the place beautiful and incredibly well located in a beautiful and historic park in the Gion area, but the owner Haraguchi-san's kindness, availability and discretion are to be praised. This is a very nice... More

Our family of four stayed in this Ryokan for one night between our trips to Osaka and Tokyo. It was one of the highlights - an absolutely gorgeous house in a stunning location with Mr. Haraguchi's beautiful ceramic pottery displayed everywhere. The host let us keep our bags at his own house when we arrived early and then gave us... More

The place was as good as it's reviews. Old and charming. Good location. Everything works. The owners are very nice and helpful. Check out the ceramics atelier as well. I highly recommend this place for people seeking an authentic japanese vibe!

We stayed here for 3 days with a toddler. There are few pros and cons about this ryokan. The ryokan is a bit old and musty. I'd say this is not a honeymoon place. But it worked out well for us despite few issues. We got the whole house for ourselves which was nice due to our noisy toddler. I... More

A gem located right behind the famous Yasaka-jinja temple at Gion, this authentic dirt-walled house is perfect for families. Like most old houses in the park, it has an earthy smell that can take some getting used to. But perhaps of the way and where the house is built - under the rock face of the hill - it's consistently... More
