Hotel Mume is now on our list of absolutely favourite small hotels in the world! !We had the most wonderful stay, in the Moon Room. The staff are amazing, so patient with maps, directions, dinner reservations, and a fabulous breakfast and Happy Hour each day. Lovely touches everywhere, fresh flowers, homemade biscuits, yoghurt, cakes and best coffee. Great location in Gion, a...

Thoroughly recommend this hotel. Excellent service, centrally located in Gion with every amenity a boutique hotel has to offer. Particularly the flexible happy hour! The hotel is small, so booking well in advance is necessary. If we come back to Kyoto, we will definitely book here

I've not read about a place that seemed to have people raving SO much about the staff but now I understand. The people at Mume make this one of our favorite places that we have ever visited. The genuine concern for ALL aspects of our trip, their constant offers of help with taxis, restaurants, directions, umbrellas, and just the overall...

The hotel is absolutely wonderful and it a location, Gion, by a little water stream. They serve complementary drinks during happy hour (5-7pm), which we enjoyed very much after long days of sightseeing, by their large living room window overlooking the stream. The rooms are lovely, the breakfast is delicious. But what Hotel Mume has that sets them a part...

Mume is an amazing hotel, the owner Hisako welcomes you warmly each day and she has the most wonderful staff who go out of their way to make sure your stay in Kyoto is memorable. This is our second stay at Hotel Mume and won't be our last. They make you feel so welcome. The breakfast are interesting and great....

The TA reviews that describe the truly exceptional service at this hotel are spot on. There seem to be as many staff members as they have rooms. They can't do enough for their guests. They think of things you may need before you know you need them. The rooms are impeccable and very comfortable. High quality linens and a well-stocked...

My girlfriend and I had a wonderful one-night stay on Showa Day at Hotel Mume. Check-in After arriving at Kyoto Station from Tokyo, we hopped aboard Bus 206 for ~20 minutes and arrived at bright red door of Hotel Mume. After being buzzed in, we were relieved of our bags from reception and led to two chairs placed directly in...

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Mume for 7 nights in April, 2017. As all the reviews have mentioned, the service and hospitality were exceptional. We've never encountered such helpfulness from any hotel staff in our 20 years of traveling the world. The owner, Hisako, sets the tone for friendliness and helpfulness. She greeted us enthusiastically nearly every morning...

Super central hotel and the service is amazing. You can basically get drunk off their free daily happy hour (full bar!). The staff is actually good with English and is super helpful for directions and transportation tips. A couple weeks before my stay, I emailed them to ask them to make a restaurant reservation for me (fine dining restaurants in...

My husband, 8 year old son and I had the great pleasure of staying at Mume for 4 nights in April. From the moment we arrived to the time we left, we were thoroughly pampered and wonderfully looked after by the amazing staff. We stayed in the Flower Room which gave us an incredible space to relax after busy days...

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
