Super central hotel and the service is amazing. You can basically get drunk off their free daily happy hour (full bar!). The staff is actually good with English and is super helpful for directions and transportation tips. A couple weeks before my stay, I emailed them to ask them to make a restaurant reservation for me (fine dining restaurants in...

My husband, 8 year old son and I had the great pleasure of staying at Mume for 4 nights in April. From the moment we arrived to the time we left, we were thoroughly pampered and wonderfully looked after by the amazing staff. We stayed in the Flower Room which gave us an incredible space to relax after busy days...

We stayed at Mume hotel for four nights. The staff was probably the most helpful we ever came across - doing their outmost to guide, assist and provide tips during our visit. Every evening before we went out for dinner, we were asked what are our plans for the day after. When we were back from dinner a set of...

A friend and I stayed here for 6 nights in late March 2017. From the time we were greeted at the red front door, to the time we left, the attention and personalised service from all staff, was nothing short of exceptional. Assistance with day to day adventures, with accurate print outs of maps, complete with highlighted suggestions for walking...

My husband and I stayed for 6 nights in the Wind Room. Beautiful outlook over the little river and picturesque Kyoto quiet street life. Extremely clean rooms and very comfortable beds. Bathroom immaculate! The friendly staff are so helpful, assisting us with any plans we needed to make, restaurant recommendations, bookings, taxis, directions to places to visit and train stations...

We stayed there last week for 3 nights based on a recommendation from a friend. It was even better than he mentioned. The location is great, the rooms reasonably priced and incredibly well appointed and clean. The staff were amazing, recommending restaurants and looking after absolutely anything. I'd go back there in a flash - what a superb hotel!

Not much else can be said about Mume that hasn't been mentioned by myself or others before. This trip, I stayed in the 'Wind' room which was lovely. I booked 8 months in advance to ensure I could stay at Mume. In fact, who else arranges their travel dates around accommodation availability? This is the only place I would ever...

A bit late in writing this review as we stayed last year. If this hotel is the same as it was then...please do not hesitate to book! We were extremely lucky to get a last minute reservation, having looked to book 6 months earlier without success - my top tip is plan ahead and book early to secure a room....

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
