While the rooms are tiny, the location near Kyoto station, decoration, and amenities -- such as free Ramen, helpful staff, and a public bath make up for the size. We stayed three nights, then checked out to move to a ryokan for a night. We had planned to move to Nagoya, but were so happy with the hotel, that we...

I've stayed at three different Kyoto properties and really love Westin Miyako Kyoto (gave it 5-star too). But deep in my heart I will always go back to Dormy Inn even though I can use my Starwood points for free rooms at Westin and enjoy Platinum service there. Here are the reasons: 1. Dormy Inn chain's charm All Dormy Inn...

love the location of this Dormy Inn which is just opposite the Kyoto Station which is the main station connecting Kyoto to other major cities ie Osaka, Tokyo. Kyoto Station also house Isetan and shops for your daily needs. Do visit Isetan before it is about to close to get some supper like sushi and sashimi. Dormy Inn is one...

Compact but very comfy room and bed. Nice touches such as built in chargers, free bottled water replaced daily, coffee and tea available most hours near lobby. Staff friendly and helpful, breakfast buffet wonderful, location a short block from train station. Never got to try the baths on the roof, but clearly many guests enjoyed them. Great base for exploring...

Like most Japanese hotels, the rooms really are tiny. However they are nicely furnished and well equipped. Tea and coffee making facilities, free water (replenished daily), free Internet (bring your own router for wifi), pyjamas! There are also free drink making facilities downstairs so you can make iced tea / coffee etc, and excellent free ramen in the evenings. Also...

This hotel is very Japanese (sort of a stupid thing to say about a hotel in Japan, but it's more Japanese than say a Best Western). The staff didn't speak super excellent English and most things were all in Japanese so it was a little tricky sorting out things like the TV and lights and the toilet operations. However, it's...

My 17 year old daughter thought this hotel was so cool. Sleek lines, stainless steel cups, she love it after the onsens. My 15 year old son loved the free late night ramen (9-11pm). He ate 7 bowls. It was wonderful that they had free washers available and it was strategically during the midway point in our trip. (Dryers were...

Located very near the Kyoto Station which was great for the Bullet train service but also within the city itself. Room was spacious by Japanese standards, breakfast was incredible! and although the English was not as good as in Tokyo with the staff, they were very helpful and accommodating. There was wifi (abit hit and miss) and two pcs in...

I absolutely love this hotel. It's 3 minutes walk from the Kyoto station so it's very convenient if you are using the subway or buses, or even going to Arashiyama or Osaka, which are both just 25-30 minutes away by train. The hotel looks new. They allowed me to check into the room early at 1 pm. The front desk...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
