As others have mentioned, the staff here are particularly nice, breakfast better than usual for Toyoko Inn and common areas nice and bright. Room the usual Toyoko Inn. As one reviewer below has noted, Toyoko Inns are designed for the Japanese business traveller and have made few concessions to their increasing popularity as an economical place to stay in Japan....

I have stayed at Toyoko inn on gojo karasuma and Shijo karasuma before. Gojo omiya location is definitely not as convenient as the 2 mentioned above. Staff was very friendly. I stayed on 3 different room types: double, single and deluxe twin. Everything worked in all the rooms I have stayed in except wifi was sporadic no matter which room...

We stayed for 11 nights at this gem of a hotel. It was easy to book via email and to find out that the room was suitable for our requirements as my husband requires an accessible room. The location is pretty good - walking distance to the train station and an easy bus ride or walk to the main attractions...

Toyoko Inn has 4 hotels in Kyoto, and all of them are difficult to reserve. This hotel is the 3rd convenient one as regards transportation since Toyoko Inn 4jyo and 5jyo Karasuma can be accessed by subway, meaning getting off Shinkansen and only taking one subway is required. However, to this 4jyo Omiya, from kyoto Station, once you take a subway and...

The best thing I can say about this hotel is their friendly and helpful staff. They're all smiles and very welcoming. Room is very clean and good sized. Sterilised sleeping gowns are provided and slippers as well. We took bus no. 206 from Kyoto station and the bus stop is really close to the hotel. Bus 207 also stops here....

I had stayed here for 3 nights with friends and we booked family room with 2 double bed. The room we stayed also have a small living room with a sofa, fridge, kettle. The water pressure and airconditioner/heater works great. It's near to many local shops like 7 eleven, lawson and etcs as well as small cafe and restaurants. We...

Nice reception with two friendly girls working there. Location is pretty bad as the hotel is far away from all attractions. However, there is a bus line 207 to the center of Kyoto and it stops fifty meters from the hotel entrance – so this is very convenient (recommended to buy daily ticket). Our room was very small, though this...

Stayed for 3 nights in this week in family room. The room is clean and enough space for family of 4. Shower is OK. The hotel served typical simple Japanese breakfast, provided with water dispenser and Mircowave oven. Location is quite far from major attraction even though is serve by Bus 206 and 207 only. Very few eating places around...

The hotel is much nicer than its photo on their website, so don't let that put you off! It is quite a hike from the railway station and nearest subway station, so walking is not practical with luggage. There are few restaurants in the area of the hotel. To be fair there are other Toyoko Inns in Kyoto with better...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

“If you are travelling in Japan on a budget, but want something way better than a hostel, the Toyoko Inn chain is for you. They have dozens of hotels all over Japan and some in Korea too. Join their loyalty scheme, You can check in earlier and leave later for less cost. If you are staying in one place for 3 days or more, consider using their eco plan which gives you a discount for not having your room cleaned daily.”
