They cannot even entertain to make a lunch booking for the date of check out. Other meals during the stay is fine. What a stubborn service standard. If you need help with other arrangement, definitely should not pick this one.

My visit in Kyoto will be memorable because of this Hotel. I loved it. The staff are extremely customer focused. I had two occasions where two staff members at Shop Kanra went above and beyond. IN fact the whole staff provide excellent customer service. If you want to buy a small Bonsai tree--to have a little piece of Japan to...

We stayed in the room that accomodated four persons. A traditional mix modern style, a very clean and neat room. Bed was good and suit our sleep. The bath room was large and a japanese style round-wooden bath tub made it a distinctive bath room. The staffs were very warm, friendly and efficient. From Kyoto main station, it's 15 minutes...

We loved our recent stay at Hotel Kanra. The main take away for us is that this hotel's style and service complemented superbly our visit to Kyoto -- it really became part of the experience. That begins with the hotel's décor: it projects beautifully Japanese culture, in a modern style. Our room was large, with two double beds, a cozy...

This is a lovely property - make no mistake about that. Situated right next to a lovely Buddhist Temple and an easy walk north from the Kyoto Train Station, we thought we had chosen well. We took a taxi from the train station (having arrived by Shinkansen) as the station is not well labelled and the Shinkansen exit leaves you...

One of the best hotel experiences Ive ever had. Hotel Kanra has a clean, modern Japanese aesthetic. Room was extremely comfortable and spacious. We stayed in the "annex" but dont be worried about that - its the same building and our room was still a shorter walk from reception / the bar than most other hotels. The food in the...

A great blend between a ryokan and a modern hotel. Spacious room and able to accommodate our family of 4 comfortably. 12 minutes from Kyoto station which is useful for travelling using Kyoto as a base. Short bus ride away to attractions. Exceptional front desk staff. So very helpful

Our arrival and settling in to the Hotel Kanra was a little bumpy. The taxi didn't know where to let us off, as the entrance to the hotel is not obvious, and there was no staff to help us in. Then we were told we would be in the "Annex," which maybe due to language and cultural differences sounded like...

The Kanra comes within an inch of striking an ideal balance between authentic Japanese style and western comfort. The place is very modern, yet designed with many traditional Japanese elements - especially in the rooms which are essentially a westernised version of a traditional Japanese living space. Those "western" comforts come in the form of space, large bathrooms with oversized...

My family wanting to have a first hand experience at staying in a Japanese Ryokan, while in Kyoto during the December Holidays, Kanra is simply the RIGHT choice! We were in Kyoto for a week and attempted a 4-night stay at the Kanra Main Building and another 3night stay at the Annex Block. Basically, the Main Building was recently refurbished...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
