Ace Hotel Kyoto lives in a part new build and part historic structure that was once home to a beloved landmark telephone company, designed in partnership with our longtime friends Commune Design and the legendary architect Kengo Kuma. Our first hotel in Asia, Ace Hotel Kyoto lives in the cultural epicenter of Japan, a place revered for its abundance of art, craft and nature. There’s an inspired Lobby with a dedicated art gallery, three distinct restaurants by award-winning culinary partners, 24-hour gym, flexible event spaces and a verdant garden courtyard. There’s also the first Stumptown Coffee Roasters cafe in Japan, and we’re within walking distance to cultural landmarks like the Nishiki Market, Kyoto Art Center and Kamesuehiro, the iconic 200-year old confectionary.

We stayed as a family of four in the Family Tatami room. It was so spacious for essentially 4 adult-sized people to lounge around in. Our teenage boys loved strumming on the guitar and the record player added great vibe. The bathroom area was huge and all four of us could use it without too much drama or waiting. Location was great - a quick hop by subway to Kyoto Station to catch the Shinkansen. The historic building complex houses great quirky shops and you would see lots of locals coming by. We used the complimentary bikes (choice of e bike or manual) to cycle along the riverway. As coffee lovers, we purchased the Bottomless Cup coupon which allows unlimited coffee orders from Stumptown Roasters (a cool cafe located in hotel lobby) - it was a dangerous caffeine overload though! It’s worth it if you think you’ll be having three coffees per day.

Overall it was a most memorable stay that won the approval of our teenagers!

Dear TravelGnomes, Thank you for sleeping with us. We really do appreciate you choosing our hotel and taking the time to share your experience with us with the world. So glad to see that the kids stayed creative with the music and that you all could hop on the MATE e-bikes and explore Kyoto. Great choice with the Free Flow Coffee ticket, probably the best way to face jet lag and stay active on a busy trip. We miss you already and cannot wait to welcome you back. We enjoyed our stay at the Ace Hotel and had no real complaints. The hotel was very affordable and has a lot of positive energy. The staff were all young, and extra kind and helpful. The breakfast was a set menu, fresh and delicious, served in a bright stylish room.

The hotel restaurants were a bit odd with challenging hours for opening. One was Mexican and the other was an Italian bar. It was pleasant because we could sit outside and have a drink looking down onto a garden, but "Mr. Maurice's" Italian drinks menu was hilarious and not remotely Japanese.

The neighbourhood is great for walking to trendy restaurants and shopping. The hotel had bicycles and e-bikes, free for guests, which were fantastic for exploring the city and discovering the temples and the bamboo forest. This is a great way to see these sights because the entire journey becomes a cultural adventure.

The gym is decent and reasonably well equipped.

The hotel has a hip, open concept lobby, and a general vibe that reminded us of the trendy Camper hotel in Barcelona. The rooms were small and basic, with wool hunting-camp style blankets on the beds, and other funny and quirky decor choices like this that contributed more to promoting that hip style than creating comfort.

Entirely happy with our stay but I would say the high points for us were the breakfast, the bikes and the neighbourhood.

The Ace Hotel Kyoto is a vibe. There need to be many more such hotels around the world. My feedback on the hotel is as follows -

Pros
- Centrally located on the main streets of Kyoto - 10 mins away from the main station
- Part of an old government building giving it a lot character vs just a standard glass building or a hotel structure
- Comfortable, uniquely designed rooms
- A live record player in the room with record of choice the could be borrowed from the reception
- 3 wonderful restaurants on premise - Italian, Mexican and farm to table and an attached coffee shop as well
- Hotel attached to a set of high end shops
- Helpful and hospitable staff
- A nice tub to soak in to enjoy a hotel onsen experience
- A modern TV that syncs to your phone to watch streaming devices
- Overall positive and modern design - very design forward
- I slept very comfortably so whoever selected the pillows and mattresses did a great job

Cons
- Very pricey farm to table restaurant, flavours were a little bland
- Nothing else really

I found it to be a standout wonderful place to stay. Do visit and stay.

Our stay at the Ace Hotel was quite comfortable - room was spacious, beds were comfortable and the location was great (~20 min walk to Gion district and in a more 'local' area). However, we found the service to be lacking any warmth. The front desk staff was transactional, especially when compared to two excellent hotels of a similar category we stayed in across Japan prior to arriving in Kyoto. They made basic things like pre-booking cars or taxis to be a complicated process and we ended up booking our own transportation most of the time. Breakfast, while delicious, took ages each morning even though we arrived around 7.30/8 am when it was not crowded and ordered ready meals like yogurt bowls. Overall, I would not stay at this hotel again if I visited Kyoto, not because of the facilities (which were good) but because I feel you can can get much better experience overall elsewhere.

The bed was big and the room was quiet and comfortable.
The room had a record player, so we were able to enjoy records.
In addition to the records in the room, you can also select records at the front desk.
The bathroom and toilet are separate and the bathtub is deep, so it was perfect for soothing my tired body after walking around the city.
The facility where the hotel is located, ShinPuhkan, is also home to restaurants and stylish shops, and is directly connected to the station so you can enjoy yourself even if the weather is bad during your trip.
However, there were a lot of drinks in the minibar fridge, which was a bit of a hassle when trying to refrigerate the souvenirs I bought...

We loved this hotel. The concierge went above and beyond to help us with two serious issues our group had. The food and service at Mr. Maurice's was excellent. The rooms were spacious and well laid out and quiet which might surprise you when you walk into the busy reception and coffee shop area. Loved the decor and layout of the hotel.

A few years ago I had to cancel my reservation at the Ace Hotel in New York due to COVID. Having a regret for that, I booked Ace Hotel Kyoto this time.
The Historic Room had a nice classic interior just as you can see in the photo. Actually, only two disadvantages of this hotel were the dryer with weak wind and the poor view out the window. Everything else was satisfactory. Despite being well soundproofed, it was very noisy when we were there because a construction was going on on the road. We had to move to another room and the new room was very quiet, but had a back alley view. However, the staff was quick to respond to all our requests and we were impressed.
The bed was very comfortable, and the best thing was the bathroom faucet - maybe if you try it you'll see what I mean.
The location was also very good, so it was convenient for eating or shopping, and it was also nice to be able to use Stump Coffee.
I would recommend this hotel for those who prefer a convenient location and a cheerful atmosphere.

Our visit to Kyoto and 3 night stay at this hotel was driven by a pop up dinner reservation to Noma Kyoto (by Chef Rene Redzepi), held within this modern hotel. Everyone was very helpful and attentive and everyone spoke very good English. It is located about a block away from the subway, K-Line, at the Karasuma Oike station.

We stayed in the Deluxe King room on the 7th (top) floor. The bed was very comfortable. They provided a thin but weighty cover over the comforter which provided an excellent level of warmth. The bathroom was fabulous, as it offered the special Japanese toilet (heated seat and bidet) and a separated shower and tub enclosure.

We added the breakfast meals to our room. In the restaurant, you can choose Western meals or a Japanese breakfast; both were very good.

This place is pretty hip: artist displays, open business area in the lobby, cool Taco days, shops below, cool music vibes and vinyl record players in the rooms.

What can I say but perfection! The Ace Hotel was probably our favourite hotel while staying in Japan.

As soon as you walk into the foyer you know you have chosen a cool, beautifully appointed and funky hotel.

The staff are young, friendly and are only too happy to want to help. They really make the hotel with their eagerness to please and assist.

The hotel itself is so stunning with artistic features, stunning rooms with beautiful amenities. Our room even included its own vinyl record player and guitar in case you were compelled to write your own song (it even included music paper so you could write the actual music!)

We chose a deluxe King room which was a nice size for two people and did not feel cramped at all. There was free WiFi a great TV, air conditioning and also an air purifier.

Loved the bathroom, which included stunning bath products by Uka, to use in the Japanese soaking bath. The bathroom product were also all bio degradable.

The gym was my favourite part, on our trips many hotels offered a gym, that were really bad. The Ace Hotel had a really good tray of equipment and was also clean and they provided great sanitisation equipment.

The hotel has coffee shops and many stores down stairs and is also close to SO much shopping and sight seeing places. Within the actual hotel though you also have Piopiko
Contemporary tacos and cocktails from Michelin-ranked rockstar Chef Wes Avila, Mr. Maurice’s Italian their rooftop ode to Italian-American cooking and Mr. Maurice’s Rooftop Bar their rooftop ode to Italian-American cooking serving pasta, wood fire pizza, wine and cocktails. For an early morning pick me up you can also visit Stumptown Coffee Roasters.

After all my friends who had been to Kyoto told me it was their favourite place, I now know exactly why, what an incredible place. We would definitely come back and suggest this amazing hotel. It was one of the best parts of the holiday.

Great design, mediocre facility, lacking service

Essentially it’s a hotel accommodating to White tourists who want to feel they’re in the U.S., rather than Japan.

The hotel is beautifully detailed both for common areas and the room. Many small details showed efforts.

There’s no pool, and only a small gym and some restaurants inside the hotel, while the connected 新風館 has many good shops. It’s centrally located in a central Kyoto area with easy access to tourist hotspots.

However, the hotel charges for laundry bags which is absurd. Services are bad. While the staff wear expensive watches, the same could not be said about their ability to UNDERSTAND English and hospitality.
