The Chapter Kyoto, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is celebrated for its unique combination of historic charm and modern flair, with guests enjoying its tastefully furnished rooms and cozy lounge areas. While opinions on value are mixed, due to the room sizes and dining options, the hotel's breakfast receives high marks. The staff's friendliness and helpfulness stand out, with services like the on-site onsen and laundry facilities earning praise. Though rooms are noted to be clean and well-appointed, some guests find them smaller than anticipated. Its excellent location near Gion and accessibility to public transport is a highlight, as is the proximity to shopping. Guests also commend the cleanliness throughout the hotel, particularly the well-kept public baths.

The Chapter is a great hotel in a central location in Kyoto. It has a boutique hotel feel that offers the benefits of being a Marriot Bonvoy property. Rooms are not big as is common in Japan, but in typical Japanese fashion they have maximized the space in the room so that it feels larger and yet cozy at the same time. The toilet and shower is separate, which is nice, and the bathroom and entrance area can be separated from the sleeping area with a traditional Japanese sliding door. Our room didn’t have a view (actually the window was frosted, and when opened just revealed the side of a building), but the hotel isn’t that the tall so I don’t think views are really why one should stay here. The hotel also has well-appointed gym, and a traditional Japanese bath. As I am a platinum bonvoy member we were given free breakfast which is served in the lobby restaurant. The lobby restaurant is open for lunch and also offers drinks in the evening (with Bonvoy platinum members and above getting free wine, beer, and sake), but the restaurant is not currently serving dinner. Staff was nice, although, mostly not from Japan which caused an issue with my invoice (long story short I am allowed a tax exemption and the first staff member I dealt with had no idea what I was talking about, and just shut me down, a manager rectified at check-out), but overall staff are friendly and accommodating. Overall, for the value and location – walking distance to a lot of restaurants – this is a great hotel to stay at when visiting Kyoto for any purpose.

Great location and hotel to get your zen back after Tokyo or Osaka.

The hotel is in a great location and easily accessible by public transportation from the bullet train. The main shopping area and restaurants are about a 15 minute walk. There are also sightseeing landmarks within a 30min walk.

The staff at check in were awesome and got some goodies upon arrival. They also upgraded my reservation and gave me options for a bigger room, but I decided on the larger room with a bigger bed. The happy hour for members is very limited from 5-630pm. They should really consider changing or extending the hours to 8pm. The staff stay behind the bar and don’t pick up plates so it would not be that big of a burden. The appetizers are very limited and I went there for the sake sampler.

The rooms are not big, but fine for a couple. The bathroom is also small, but I was surprised that they provided a 3 step facial cleanser and moisturizer… so nice!

There are no views, but the trade offs are worth it - the rooms completely blackout and the place is so quiet. I really booked the hotel for the public bath - beautifully designed for you to relax. I spent at least 2 hrs during a rainy day. So it’s a good alternative to bad weather or just a day for r&r.

I was not a big fan of the breakfast, but I’m biased with having an American breakfast. I should have taken the points, but it was fine. The staff at the restaurant and during happy hour are great. They were always happy to welcome you.

Overall, highly recommend and I would book again if I’m in town.

I had to make a last minute reservation here because we got sick and did not want to stay with relatives. This hotel was great! The location and hotel itself was awesome.

We were actually staying here on the day of Yamaboko Junko of Gion Matsuri so we walked to the corner to watch the parade floats come by after breakfast. The hotel is also a couple blocks away from Kawaramachi shopping area. Bus is probably the best way to get to and from, but with Gion Matsuri, a lot of the streets were closed so we took the subway a couple times.

We checked and went straight to the happy hour. We had salad and snacks and drinks before heading out to meet family. The same place is where the breakfast buffet is and of course, the food was delicious. They have an onsen and the coin laundry is located inside the onsen.

The room itself was pretty spacious with a long hallway that started with a tiny mudroom-like area. One end of the room had a couch and minibar/frige plus a round table with chairs.

Our family of five just returned from touring Japan and adored this hotel. This hotel was such a lovely retreat while spending some time in Kyoto. The hotel is immaculate, and the staff is very friendly. The daily breakfast offerings were more than adequate to get you started. My husband and I particularly enjoyed the evening happy hour social. It was a great time to unwind with a drink, and some snacks before going out to dinner. The location was wonderful. We were able to walk to many places for shopping and dining. The rooms are small by American standards but allowed more than enough room for us. We had two rooms since a room for 5 people can be difficult to find. We utilized the laundry facilities at the hotel, which were readily available and easy to use. I cannot say enough good things about Chapter Hotel! If returning to Kyoto, I would absolutely stay here again.

Our family of 5 spent 4 nights at this lovely & fairly new hotel in Kyoto. The staff was helpful, especially maiko. Rooms were very clean yet on the small side, but comfortable. We had a superior king with shower; I was told all king rooms were in the center and the small window you couldn’t see through nor open. Our 3 sons stayed in a superior twin room with shower (with an added third bed). Their room was cramped inside, but it had windows that faced front of hotel. We had trouble with the air conditioning a couple of times, but eventually worked. The bathroom was nice; best shower I had in any of the hotels! The public bath/ onsen and women’s locker room was nice & relaxing especially after a long day of walking. Breakfast was nice but crowded, and we also had free udon at 9pm! The coin operated washer & dryer were also very handy (can get busy, so must be patient). We were about 8 minutes/several blocks away from the station, which was near the gion matsuri (festival) parade route! Walking distance to nishiki market and gion. We ended up taking bus which was easy and convenient. We also stayed at Hilton garden inn Kyoto which was also new and nice. Would stay at either place again, especially chapter!

The rooms at the new hotel are clean. I smelled an overseas hotel the moment I entered. More than half of vacationers are foreigners. The public bath is just the right size for the size of the hotel. I'm glad we had Japanese and Western breakfast. It is also well located for sightseeing in central Kyoto. The reason it has one fewer star is that compared to Resort hotels, the quality of towels and bread in the hotel are business hotel class. The view from the room should not be seen. Difficulty adjusting the air conditioning in the room (too cold or too hot when air conditioning is loosened). The reason is a short walk from the station.

We stayed for three nights at this comfortable hotel, which is centrally located for most of the sites. Most of the tourist sites can be accessed by local bus or train within easy walking distance of the local bus sto or station.

The hotel is a modern Tribute hotel and is in nice condition. The room was “compact” to say the least and we did not have an outside window. The rooms are aligned with traditional decor and of a minimalist layout. Although small, the room was functional, comfortable and adequate for a couple of nights. The bed linen was of a high quality and the thick bed topper provided a comfortable sleep. The shower/wet room, again, was of a compact nature, however the shower itself was excellent. The bathroom soap and creams were of a good quality.

The reception staff were friendly and offered a welcome drink on arrival.

A nice hotel for a short stay, if looking for a longer stay or a stay for business this property may not fit the bill.

Located in a great part of Kyoto, walkable to the imperial palace as well as Gion, this property was extremely convenient for my exploring of Kyoto. The interior of the property is very sleek and modern looking.

The room is a traditional Japanese style room with a tatami mat. Decent size for Japan and the bed was super comfortable. Very clean — spotless, and I felt very relaxed.

The hot spring/public bath was very well kept and was a very nice addition to the overall feel of the hotel. Additionally, the late night ramen service was exactly what I needed after exploring all day. Breakfast was a bit overpriced but it was still good.

Service was top notch—I could really tell they wanted me to enjoy my stay here. This was a fantastic hotel and I’d come here again in a heartbeat.

Great modern Marriott property on the quiet end of a busy shopping street in downtown Kyoto. The room was small but quite functional. However, the sliding screen door between the bathroom sink and the bedroom made it difficult for me to squeeze out of bed without bumping into the screen and waking my hubby.

We were lucky to get a top-floor room which was very quiet and had a nice view of the river. The onsite onsen was brand new and very popular at prime hour ( between 6 and 8 pm). There are several good restaurants in the area but they tend to close early.

The staff was helpful and pleasant. The bathroom amenities were great, although I lament the disappearing individual bottles to take home! The lobby is attractive. It would be nice if they offered a cold drink, a cup of sake,, or a small snack at the onsen as many places we visited in Japan did. A good Marriott Bonvoy redemption although I did not receive any special recognition or welcome.

The location was okay. It’s not near Kyoto Station or in Gion, but we felt as if we were centrally located. It’s about 3 blocks from the nearest subway station and walkable to several popular streets.

The rooms were small but most Japanese hotel rooms are. Probably a little small for an American-style hotel. We really didn’t enjoy that we couldn’t see out the windows.

The on-site onsen was excellent and the gym was nice.

The best part for us was the free happy hour every day due to my Marriott status.

This is a very busy hotel and a good choice, although you could probably find a hotel in a more convenient location and with bigger rooms.
