It's only a few minutes by Kyoto City Bus from this hotel to my home, so it's not normal to stay here, but I sometimes stay here as a 'friend' when my acquaintances from outside the city come. This time around, its accommodations, the hotel's location as good as ever, and its competitors have gone out of business because they can't stand the "patience competition" of the Koroka crisis. Small and medium-sized accommodations are in the surrounding area, but the only ones that can match are the far-flung Kyoto Hotel Okura and Kyoto Brighton Hotel ... the others, if any, are not competitors in terms of grade and size. The entrance here is small, and it's not too far away, but above all, across Horikawa-dori Street is Nijo-jo Castle, one of the world heritage sites. Just a few minutes on foot. If you go a little further, you will also find Shinsen-en Garden, which is small but full of sights. Access is impeccable, so why couldn't our competitors put up with the pandemic in this place? Strange. I assume that he was too habitual in the lord's business (since it was a facility for Oyahohinomaru) to save for his daily efforts and certain risks. This is a bustling place with Nijo Castle right in front of you queuing in front of the ticket machines from the early morning, the vast parking lot filling up quickly, the bustle is as good as Shimizu, Kinkaku-ji Temple and Arashiyama (although this is unusual in some seasons), only this patient hotel has a "good eye", the win by one! The interior of the building is small in terms of coffee shops and restaurants, small in terms of conference halls, small in terms of the number and variety of restaurants, but there are plenty of good locations to compensate.

This hotel is in the process of updating their rooms - and at check-in, they made a point of letting us know... which is why we didn't have a room facing Nijo Castle. Rooms are small which is OK for a short stay. Everything worked well and bathrooms were very good size. Public areas - lobby, restaurants, etc. were what you would expect from a hotel that seems to cater to business and weddings. Staff were very helpful at every level but sometimes took a few repeats to understand on both sides of the question. A few things to point out: 1. Breakfast - if your room rate includes breakfast, it looks fantastic. But at $25/per person, much more than I would ever eat in the morning. When asked if there was anywhere I could just get coffee and toast - they said no - only buffet. So if you want to get a coffee and something light, you have to walk a few blocks to a 7/11 or Family Mart. This seems very odd for a hotel of this level. 2. Location - Across from Nijo Castle which is great. Metro line at the corner, although you may have to transfer to get around. Kyoto is actually very 'spread out' so no hotel will be near everything. Taxis were easy to use and reasonable considering the distances. 3. Hotel Shuttle is great - free service to/from Kyoto Station. If you are arriving by train, check the schedule and especially where you need to meet - it's on the opposite side of the station from the tour busses.... look for Shuttle Buss stop. 4. Restaurants: At the hotel they are expensive, but very good. We arrived just as all restaurants were closing, but they accommodated us and the food was excellent. There are restaurants on the main street, but hours may be limited. Most have 'order by machine' with English as an option, so its not as intimidating as it seems - although some items may be different than you imagined in the photo... but that's part of the experience. Staff were always helpful and sometimes amused. Overall, very good for a few nights in the renovated rooms and although it may seem remote for many sights, when you get oriented, its actually a very convenient location - especially with the shuttle service.

I arrived at the hotel at 2.20 pm and told the Japanese lady I have a booking, she told me the check in time is 3 pm abruptly with in unfriendly manner or rather angry. I told her I just wanted to know what sort of room I was going to have and showed her a photo of a very rundown room from travellers’ photos online, she said that was what I would get. I told her that in this case I wanted to modify my booking to have a better room or cancel my booking. She said you can’t do that, then I told her I had an email from the hotel that I could do that. She said “show me the email”. When I showed her the email, she said that is wrong and the older man came in had a look and he apologised. It is a step down coming from Groove Hotel, Shinjuku, a Parkroyal hotel, after 10 nights staying there. Everything was 5 stars. From then onwards the older guy took over the booking and he was quite pleasant. I wish the hotel had a CCTV for the management to see how a staff member treated the guest. I have stayed in many Crown Plaza hotels around the world like Singapore, KL, Auckland, New York City, London, Chicago and Seattle and have never experienced a rude, unfriendly, arrogant receptionist like her. I have been in hospitality for more than 20 years. Subsequent to this we stayed at the ANA Crown Plaza Hotel in Hiroshima and no problems modifying my booking from 3 nights to 2 nights when I check in with a very pleasant young man. At Kyoto Crown Plaza Dennis, the bell captain, was alert, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and seemed to be indispensable to the smooth operation of all the guests checking in and out.

I was initially a bit skeptical about staying here upon seeing just a 4 rating on TripAdvisor. However we found the rooms to be very modern, updated and clean. The service was good and the location was excellent, right opposite the Nijo castle. The complimentary shuttle to the Kyoto train station was a big plus although make sure to get there a few minutes early as they sometimes get full.

After reading reviews about 'renovated rooms' we asked at the desk when we checked in. These aren't renovated they are just a different class of rooms called Luxury standard and unfortunately for us they were sold out at the time of our stay.
The hotel itself was nice, and in a nice location. Free shuttle to Kyoto station was handy and we used many times but can get busy. The staff were really nice, very helpful, especially the bell captain which for us was a lovely lady (didn't get her name sorry) who helped us with our luggage delivery forms.
The standard rooms just really let the hotel down, they were dark and the decor old fashioned. The beds were uncomfortable and the furniture felt like it could fall apart if we weren't careful so we didn't use it as they took our card for a security deposit. There were stains on the carpet, and the curtains were discoloured from the sun. When we turned the kettle on the lights dimmed in the room. We paid for breakfast during our stay but only used it once as we didn't particularly enjoy it.
We still enjoyed our time in Kyoto, just opt for the luxury standard rooms for better comfort.

No hotel description at check-in. Breakfast included but no breakfast ticket.
And this time I went out of my way to choose a hotel with a pool, even if it was a little expensive, just to relax, but at check-in I was told I couldn't use the pool. I was not convinced because there was no mention on the website/reservation page, and I told him that I could have stayed somewhere cheaper without the pool, and he said, "What would you like me to do if I did that?" It was the first time I had heard of a response to a complaint in Japanese service. I could have been in manager class, which was even more surprising because I was so old. The decision will even be made at the result checkout. And it was a different person when I checked out, but he didn’t say anything until he charged me a tourist tax in Kyoto and then I asked if he had heard anything. What they said was that they would refund 3,000 yen for two pool usage fees. I don't feel comfortable with refunds for things I haven't even paid yet. By the end of the day, I was angry and disappointed with the service, which seemed to be nothing like an ANA Group hotel rather than a swimming pool. The room feels aging in places, the TV is in this day and age, and you can't watch VOD. Not worth more than 20,000 yen a night at all. If you're going to price the same, you definitely should go elsewhere!

Unfortunately it was our worse stay for our time in Japan. Firstly the entire hallway and roomed smelt of long over stained cigarettes. Asked to see if any other options were available even with offering to pay the excess with next to no help/ support. I can put that down to maybe a breakdown in communication perhaps…. Rooms were extremely cramped for a family of 5. With the amenities equally as small. Reasons it got some stars was because the Buffett breakfast, whilst slightly pricey, had a large selection and was tasteful and the location was very convenient.
I would strongly recommend looking else where ESPECIALLY if you have small children

The first good thing is that the hotel is conveniently located very close to the entrance to Nijojo-mae subway station. If you could see the sights, it would be nice to have Nijo Castle right in front of you. However, the room is cold. Akiko said she liked cold winters, but the cold to her hotel room was a surprise. On the first day I checked in, the room might be cold, but on the second and third day I went out and opened the room, and the heating was turned off during that time. Every time I came back, it was warm to the hallway, but very cold when I entered the room, and it was a surprise that I had to turn on the heating to its strongest. However, Kyoto is cold almost everywhere. Don't let it get too hot for a T-shirt. In some restaurants, you can even wear a coat. The tap water on the toilet wash in restaurants in Kyoto City is also so cold that you might think you're about to lose your hands because hot water doesn't come out. (Even in high-class restaurants, hot water doesn't come out when the toilet is flushed.) I washed my hands in the toilet next to the JCB lounge at Kyoto Station on my way home, and for the first time in Kyoto, the water came out slightly hotter than I thought. Is Kyoto Station the gateway back to being a yawdy Tokyoite?

There isn't much wrong with the Crowne Plaza, but it is dated and needs an upgrade, Our room was very dated and had a great view of the castle opposite. But it was just rough around the edges and our bath and sink seemed to be made of onyx. This was an off putting yellow colour and the plumbing made an awful noise. The hotel is also a little out of the way, although does operate a shuttle bus service to Kyoto station for patrons. We do enjoy a drink or two late on before retiring and the hotel advertises (on its website and in its foyer) that it has a bar. However, this was closed and we were told that it has been closed since covid!. We also eat in the lobby bar on one occasion, just a couple of sandwiches and two soft drinks which cam to £35!.

Dear Alan A, Thank you for selecting our ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto while visiting Kyoto and for providing feedback about your experience. It's a pleasure having you as our guest. I am truly sorry you did not experience an exemplary stay due to our plumbing making noise and our room's comfort. This is certainly below our usual high standard of service. Please be certain that I have noted and forwarded your feedback for the management to improve. In the middle of your experience, I am glad our room's cleanliness and the hotel's location were still appreciated. Please grant us the opportunity to prove ourselves again. Best Regards, Ben W. Two castle facing rooms in August and despite ostensibly being non-smoking rooms they were vile. The smell of cigarette smoke was so permeated into the fabric and furnishings that our belongings picked up the smell. Many of the on site services were suspended due to Covid and have never reopened. During the day the ‘bar’ is in the lobby and is a soulless selection of tables and then in the evening a ‘Sky Bar’ opens on the roof - literally plastic garden tables and chairs on fake grass accessed by a concrete walkway. There are a huge number of staff milling around but this hotel desperately needs a facelift and to reconsider what it is offering to guests.

Lindawong9299 is right, shuttle service is frequent and usually reliable, departs JR Hachijo crntral exit always on minutes 00/15/30/45 while departing from hotel to center on minutes 05/20/35/55. Pretty useful for your tourism when in town and returning e.g. from railway station to hotel.Otherwise, underground station and bus stop for a dense and very useful efficient bus service across Kyoto is outside the CP hotel. So, not always taxi required.
There are more places to choose from in the Kyoto area.
