Everything about this hotel is in need of renovation. The decor is very dated, the bathroom was absolutely tiny, and the beds were uncomfortable, as were the pillows. We only booked this place because it was around the new year period, and possibly now understand why it was available. We will not be going back here. On a positive note,...

Rooms were average and I wasn't a fan of no safe or having to leave room key at reception, but the staff here are what made this hotel worthwhile to me. One day when we were out the housekeeping accidentally knocked over my luggage. When we returned reception told us about this, apologised and asked us to make sure nothing...

We stopped by early to drop off our luggage before sightseeing and the staff were really helpful in sorting out our luggage (since we were in two rooms) and bringing them to the room while we were gone. They were really welcoming. Decent location since it was near a station (Karasuma Oike) that connects to the JR Kyoto station (Where...

Hotel Gimmond is a little tired but makes up for it with very helpful staff, really convenient location. It is close to trains, walking distance from interesting places in Kyoto. I will definitely stay there next visit.

I only stay in rooms at night so the size of room does not really bothers me. Some people smoke in the lobby though stated prohibited. Location is very good just steps away from subway and across a convenient store. There is a Japanese dining place nears the hotel. I highly recommend that restaurant!

This is a pleasant and convenient place to stay, located as it is just a short distance from public transport, major sightseeing, a busy shopping district and excellent restaurants. The room was a reasonable size for the price, and although a bit dated in appearance, was certainly clean and comfortable enough to relax in - we particularly appreciated the tea-making...

We stayed here for 3 days. The hotel is very clean and comfortable. The rooms are small (a standard in Japan). The hotel staff are very helpful and can speak enough English to be helpful. They also sell the day pass for bus and trains in the hotel which was useful. Location is also very central, good places to eat...

As a family of 5 we had a double room and a triple. The rooms were clean but the double room is a bit smaller than others we have stayed at. The staff were amazing and went over the top to accommodate our requests. The Italian restaurant downstairs had great breakfasts and the restaurant next door was fantastic for dinner...

Our fourth visit to Kyoto. First time staying in Hotel Gimmond (Dec15, 16, 17) but we are familiar with this area as stayed in nearby Monterey Hotel before. Subway station is 3 minutes walk from the hotel. Exit 3-1 or 3-2 (dont remember exactly) has elevator so no problem to carry heavy luggages to or from street level. Stayed 3...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
