We stayed in this Inn last last month. This is the third time we used this inn as our base for visiting Kyoto. The best reason for staying in this hotel is its closeness to the Kyoto Train Station. The rooms are OK. They are clean but in Japan, this is the basic requirement. We stayed in the so called...

We were looking forward to the ryokan experience and left disappointed. I will agree with the other reviewers that the staff are very welcoming and friendly however considering you pay the equivalent for a nice hotel you expect a certain standard. Our room was 201 which is first floor and facing the road. While it doesn't seem busy, if you...

We really enjoyed our time at the this ryokan. The staff was incredibly warm and hospitable. They spoke perfect English and made it a point to give us direction, tell us about the area, and made themselves available to answer questions. They ryokan was also very clean and tidy. We're very happy that we stayed in a ryokan in Kyoto...

I have stayed about ten times in different REAL Ryokans in Kyoto. This is a fake for silly tourists. The stuff is friendly and knows English but everything else is terrible. They don't serve you like in a Ryokan. First there is no bath - which it the real fun of Ryokans. Second no dinners and breakfasts are served in...

Now- my husband and I (on honeymoon) had a modest budget, and this ryokan delivered a traditional Japanese experience without breaking the bank. There were many reasons why this was my favorite hotel in all the places we stayed in Japan: (1) Close to Kyoto station. (2) VERY close to a bike rental shop and temple (3) The room was...

Staff was great, place was clean, very fun and surprisingly comfy way to sleep. Nothing fancy, bathroom enclosed. It was within walking distance to the train station and city center. Would recommend it!

We stayed here for 4 night with our 15 month old. The staff was very friendly especially the kitchen staff who makes breakfast, and the man who works at the front desk (not the owner). Their English is quite good. When we arrived at around noon, we were told we could only access our room at 3pm. That's fine, no...

After sifting through a number of ryokans and getting totally sticker shocked by the price, we thought a traditional style Japanese hotel was out of the question. Then we stumbled upon the Matsubaya Inn, and it couldn't have turned out any better! The rooms are really nice, and it's a great place to come back to after a long day...

I had a lovely long weekend staying in one of their Western style rooms. Centrally located 5 minutes from the shinkensen station and downtown Kyoto it is a wonderful starting point for any travels around the town. I can't say enough good about the owners and staff as well. They were all very nice and helpful.

This place is incredible. All details are taken care of and they're nice to everyone. No surprises everything works, and they want to help as much h as they can. I left something in the room and I'm now in Osaka and they shipped it here from there. That's what I call service. Close to Kyoto station and currently expanding...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
